landscape photography is a great way to learn your camera as it forces you to slow down and really think about composition and then the settings you want to use for the effect you want :-)

Good job Nick I fully agree, the 12 Mpx of the D700 are far enough for any social media content up to A3+ print let’s say. A2 starts to be the limit. Your images are very nice, it’s clear one need to master some rules of composition and exposure before aiming for the highest mega pixels camera 👍

Any upscalling software nowdays can turn a 12 mpx camera to a 47 or 60 mpx. A lot of sample on the internet and on reviews. Incredible details and results. A lot of comparisons of the final results between Z7ii and D700!

KZbin has this thing about whether an older camera sensor is still up to a specific style of photography. Unless sensors degrade over time then whatever the camera could do on release it can still do now, and if you take into consideration firmware upgrades then it is technically a better camera now than it was when it was released. I've still got my D700 from new and although I now shoot with the Fuji XH2 the limiting factor with both cameras is my ability rather than the age of the sensor. If my photos are better with the XH2 then it's because I'm a better photographer now than when the D700 was my primary camera it's not because the Fuji is better than the Nikon, even if it is in just about every way. When I first started shooting with a proper camera it was with film and the perceived wisdom was that the glass was always more important than the body. You showed that with the old Nikon lens struggling with sharpness on the 12mp sensor, and had you used a more contemporary lens then your image would have been sharper from the off. The biggest issue with the D700 these days is that the EVF on a mirrorless camera does so much heavy lifting for us so getting a great exposure from my XH2 is a lot easier than with the D700. To nail a great exposure first time with the D700, especially in changing light, you need to understand how the camera 'sees' the scene so you can expose for it. I used to be able to identify an area to spot meter from with the Nikon and more or less nail the exposure, and that took time and practice and knowing the Nikon inside out, whereas it's easy on my XH2 as the EVF and the exposure compensation dial does all that work for me. Great shot in challenging light.
@duringthemeanwhilst5 күн бұрын
thanks for the great comment. I do find shooting the D700 a challenge now, but only because my workflow has changed so much. as you say, we are so spoilt with mirrorless cameras. I never used to trust the average or evaluative metering on my D700, and would always take several spot readings and meter an average scene. I can no longer imagine having to do that these days!!

You can do pretty much anything with a D700, even 4k time lapse video. Am waiting on delivery of a battery grip for mine to boost the burst rate which I hope will help with equine and bif fotos. Nice landscape print, could easily have been bigger. 12 is plenty but 13 is more 😁
@duringthemeanwhilst2 ай бұрын
13 is indeed bigger. but I had so much trouble getting the printer to work at all I was happy to just get something out of it!!

@@duringthemeanwhilst printers are the devil's work, I have an ongoing war with ours. Last major battle was when the wife's PC went from Windows 10 to 11 and her printer drivers just stopped working. "It may be nearly 20 years old soon, but is Nikon's legendary D700 still good enough for shooting detailed landscapes?" - The answer is yes. When it came out photographers were shooting great landscapes and great photos in general. I have my D700 and still shooting great photos since I bought it in 2010. I was shooting great landscapes with my Nikon FE and F90x during the film days. So, it all comes down on how to you use the "tool".
