I'm currently studying a diploma for web dev, and TOP is filling all of the gaps in my knowledge. Ive recommended it to tons if my peers. The content is so comprehensive and really makes me feel confident about what I'm learning, and it doesn't hold your hand either which has helped with learning to problem solve

I'm 90% in the foundation course. I started in December 2021 then started doing CS 50 after that i joined a Laravel bootcamp for six months and got into a Google UX UI design course. Now I'm scattered with little progress in three different courses and some useless knowledge of php and Laravel. I wish you would make a video about it and how new learners should stick to one source and finish it without being distracted by the other shiny sources. Thanks for the great content

@@fullstackmd It's true, it may be a lot to read at times...BUT we have a German saying that says "From nothing, nothing will come to you!"...No matter what you do, no matter which course...You have to DIGEST the information, you have to "walk" the path from A to B withtou shortcuts. Knowledge, wisdom and experience cannot be "downloaded" into your brain and from one day to the other you're a pro developer. Things take time. I am at the beginning of my path, but I already know that there are many wonderful resources, that may present knowledge differently, but as I've said, none of it will "miraculously" transform you into a well-paid pro developer. You have to put in the work, be dedicated and persevere. It's not complicated.

I’m about up to where he is in the foundation’s course and my understanding of them linking you to outside sources is it’s preparing you for what it’s like as a software developer when it comes to researching things you don’t know which I think the Odin project really does well it gets you used to LEARNING. Anyway I’m really enjoying it so far but I do have to agree the start will be difficult for people with no experience with I.T lucky for me I had a decent background in I.T having grown up on a PC and built a PC at a young age. That being said everything you need to know about the basics is all there for you to learn. For the dedicated ones The Odin Project is invaluable.

I like it but man sometimes there is toooo much reading in between application. I appreciate the content and stuff, it’s all free, but youd thibk project based learning would imply more doing than reading, or have a lesson, assignments to code to apply it, then next. Sometimes it’s like 6 chapters inbetween two modules and it’s nothing but reading

Yeah totally agree it’s reading heavy - I’m debating also doing Wes Bos JS 30 course exercises as I go because I need a break from reading lol

@@fullstackmd honestly, I’m thinking about just looking up literally any video pertaining to the information I’m supposed to be learning and doing the coding assignments and projects. Even using chromes dev tools are way more limited compared to Firefox. Because when something like flex box came up, it felt so overly complicated for no reason. I watched two videos and I was like “oh, that’s literally it.” Too much information being thrown at you. I can see how this is fine for established people because things make more sense because they’re used to or exposed to these concept already, but someone just getting into it, it’s like me reading you all the mechanics and combo strings in tekken and then telling you to apply what I just told you on a dummy without getting hands on practice. Even with the argument of “you can always look back” okay, I get that but lmfao that doesn’t mean you read me 4 chapters worth of concepts and different syntax without some knowledge application in between. Idk it grinds my gears sometimes lmfao

@@fullstackmd dev dreamer and kevin Powell, I really like their videos. I’m training for web dev as well, changing careers. I really enjoy this so far, it’s fun. Before getting into TOP I was told never get all your information from one place, so I guess it’s showing for me when it comes to top. Way more of a hands on type of learner and fill the gaps after I’m comfortable with what I know and want to extend. Again, using a fighting game as an analogy, learn the fundamentals mechanics, extend knowledge with frame data and ect.

My biggest problem with TOP is that it waits until it's too late to learn react. I have been doing TOP and I decided to skip past some sections to get to react due to the simple fact that my pure javascript projects were getting "sloppy" (I was doing the todo app project and my code wasn't that well written at the time). What I mean by that is the fact I was writing really long functions, very long variable names, etc. Looking back at it I realized how much mistakes I made and I'm confident I could do a much better job in vanilla javascript, however React itself taught me a lot about organizing my code into much cleaner code. I believe once you get a solid understanding of HTML,CSS, and Javascript (promises, async, and closures) you should immediately move towards learning a framework and building your skills even further using that framework. Furthermore, TOP is really lacking in terms of Data structures and algorithms in the Javascript section. I found myself having to use outside resources to supplement my learning (I also don't really believe javascript itself is great for learning data structures and algorithms but thats a rant for another day). Overall decent course just takes it way too slow once the fundamentals of HTML, CSS, and javascript are learned.

Everyone just needs to know: coding is like art, except for paint and canvas, it’s you and your computer, and instead of an end painting you finish with a program. - Stack Savvy 😂 Coding is very valuable and I always love to see new people join. Remember Googling is 100% ok. Even senior developers Google a lot. So good luck all my new people best of luck! You WILL get stuck as any new skill humans learn we get stuck! Push forward and keep going.. don’t be average and quit.

The hardest part is for sure the mass text dumps. Luckily there are tons of resources you can find with a quick google search to give you a much better idea than the immensely dense documentation. The biggest problem I've had is that - I want to learn everything about everything, and TOP teaches just what you need for that specific section, or lesson. For me, not knowing Linux or having used older versions of html in the past, and now learning CSS (which pulls the formatting out of the HTML - I end up going down numerous rabbit holes and it got overwhelming, especially understanding GIT and GITHUB. They don't go into how it all works right away - for example: they have you create A repository in your home folder, but having been a windows user i'm used to seeing my folders in a file manager - like the one in VSCode. But you can't see that folder directly (at least I couldn't on my MacBook - I had to find a way to get the text editor to see it. This caused A lot of confusion because I thought the repos directory was part of GITHUB - didn't know it was local - I had to take a few months off and study linux. There's other stuff too (ssh keys and multiple repos .. Etc.)

Yeah Git is a beast and I do think it takes more self motivation to learn through that. I think the idea is that this exposes you to stuff and ideally with practice you keep learning and getting used to it
