Is the Old Testament made up? Where is Israel outside the Bible?

The idea that we should trust ancient texts is ridiculous. Even modern texts in context deserve skepticism. Organized religion has always been in service to the powerful. The more interesting book for me is The Ancient Lowly, about archeological evidence for ancient labor struggles. Our struggle against oppression seems to have existed throughout history, but our ability to unite has never been greater.

The root of the problem is our history was fabricated after a dark age with bible chronology, before the development of archeology & stratigraphy. The Christian archeologist is confounded by two miracles: of being the only cult in history failing to build temples or churches for 300 years, and then building in the same style as the pagan basilica of 300 years before. In the XII century significant events take place, as described in the Gospels: the coming of Jesus Christ, his life and crucifixion, although the existing text of the Gospels was edited and most likely dates to the XIV-XV cc. In secular Byzantine history he is known as Emperor Andronicus and St. Andrew the Apostle the First-Called in Russian history he was portrayed as the Great Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. To be more specific, Andrey Bogolyubsky is a chronicler counterpart of Andronicus-Christ during his stay in Vladimir-Suzdal Rus’ of the XII century, where he spent most of his life. In fact, the Star of Bethlehem blazed in the middle of the XII century. This gives us an absolute astronomical dating of Christ’s Life. [ЦРС], ch.1. ‘Star of Bethlehem’ - is an explosion of a supernova, which at present is incorrectly dated to the middle of the XI century. @pctindallumw I don't mind trusting texts, but the question, for me, is: Trust in them for what? For what kind of information? Depends on the nature of the claim, the source, all kinds of things. For ancient and, as you say, for modern texts as well.

what about Jezreal? in the merneptha steele it mentions cities not nations or peoples, why would they mention Israel? there has never been a city called israel? but there has been a city called Jezrael

Good question; I'm not at all an expert on Egyptian conventions in these regards, but I do know the hieroglyph qualifier (?) sign next to the word translated "Israel" indicates a people group, and not a city or a settled, bordered land of some kind. I'm commenting from memory here and would want to double-check that. The reference is so brief, and cryptic; I can only presume they mention this "Israel" because they fought with them in some manner. As for "Jezreel," I don't know! Would have to dive deeper into that.

It doesn't mention an Israelite city. It mentions a people. Archeologists have proven the Israelites were just another Canaanite tribe living in the hills

@fordprefect5304 the inscription says it was carved in the 5th year of Merneptah of the 19th dynasty. Most of the text glorifies Merneptah's victories over enemies from Libya and their Sea People allies. The final two lines mention a campaign in Canaan, where Merneptah says he defeated and destroyed Asqaluna, Gezer, Yanoam and Israel? But why mention Israel exclusively as peoples when Asqaluna Gezer and Yanoam are just city states? Why would all of a sudden mention the peoples of Israel? It is more likely for them to be talking about the city of Jezreal or Tel Jezreel, an ancient city north of what today is modern Israel that did exist during their dynasty

I have never disputed the existence of ancient Israel, but I absolutely dispute the story of Moses and the exodus. I have seen no supporting evidence other than the Bible itself.

I think what you’re saying is fair. However the story is not an amazing one to just completely make it up out of whole cloth. It has some odd features in it that would not be ideal to invent. That doesn’t make it historical but that pushes me to search in that direction. There’s a lot of great scholarship out there exploring the idea that the story has historical elements in it and then other theological elements that are outside of or beyond or different from this genre “history“ and I think that’s about right. The genre of “history“ does not have a stranglehold on truth or meaning. But I love history and I don’t think we can ever leave it behind when exploring these matters.

actually no, The Chaldeans were a Semitic-speaking tribe that migrated to Mesopotamia from northern Mesopotamia between 940 and 855 B.C.E. They were not native to the land, unlike the Akkadians, Assyrians, and Babylonians, who had been established in Mesopotamia since at least the 30th century BC, the story of Abraham took place in the 18th century BCE, a whole 1000 years before any Chaldeans had migrated into the Babylon area yet, The Biblical evidence indicates that Ur of the Chaldees was in northern Mesopotamia, which is now part of Turkey, no where neer a sumerian ruled area by the 18th bce. The only people that would call the Sumerians by Chaldeans were the Greeks, sugesting the book of genesis either has some translation issues or it was originally written in greek and not in "biblical hebrew" or even Aramaic

The history of the ancient jews is the polished technique of reaching. And if that doesn't convince people then try over reaching. And if that still doesn't work then just call them with an accusing stare an antisemite. In this case semite just the hebrew kind not the arabic kind.
