Yes.. sad.. but I find it is a situation unlikely to change. I am the only person walking my dog in my neighborhood and it’s problematic because Filipinos hate dogs peeing everywhere. I’ve figured out where to walk him to avoid the disdain. Not a great situation but my dog is a sweetheart, like me has made a lot of friends, and I like to think of us as ambassadors for all the other dogs, hoping others will eventually start walking their dogs too. Vaccines are important too, especially parvo, to maintain a dog’s health whether kept at home or walked, as humans can spread parvo too, as easy as walking where a sick dog was recently at.
@Allin1Xavi Жыл бұрын
I was born in the Philippines and an issue that I caught onto me as I got older is the lack of care towards animals, especially dogs. Seeing how dogs are over there and how dogs are treated in the US are like night and day. Dogs are not as valued, let alone even viewed as a family member, in the Philippines as in the US. Though dogs can be overly coddled by some owners in the US which can also be a problem in itself, the other extreme is dogs gaining a lack of love and care and are still being hit as a method of discipline prominently in the Philippines when it has already been scientifically proven that it’s counterintuitive to dogs and their well-being. I am proud where I came from, but I wish something can be done more for the cruelty of animals and especially dogs, coming from a dog lover myself. I own a dog and when I move to the Philippines, I definitely want to bring her with me and I hope I can set an example to some locals on how to properly treat a man’s best friend.

Very good advice. Questionable water, roaming wild dogs, caution with taxis, bad (or no) paved streets, spotty customer service, etc. etc. This video just a reminder that the Philippines is, in fact, the developing world. Somewhat modern in sections of the big cities, but you could also easily be describing rural Mexico, Columbia, Brasil, or sub-Saharan Africa, or large parts of provincial India or Thailand, etc. etc. For Americans/Europeans that have never been elsewhere (and really take much of daily life for granted) this should be a powerful wake-up call.

@@TheFilipinaPea I've enjoyed your videos for several years now. From the beginning, I "Subscribed" with the "All" option and have always made certain to click "LIKE" for my supportive vote. During those years I've vacillated back and forth at first between The Phil. Is. and Thailand and then as to whether I actually would relocate to The Phil. Is. or just stay here in Arizona USA. Finally, (and not too long ago) I decided to stay here in AZ. USA, mostly due to my old age (now 83) but also due to several of the points you mentioned in this video. Now, after watching this video, your coverage of those many points of concern supported my final decision. However, during those past years, I studied The Phil. Is. in great detail, from Mahatao in the Batanes Islands north of Luzon Island to Badjau, Tawi-Tawi on Sanga-Sanga Island and GSC in southern Mindanao, including everything from living in several different cities to provincial living, governments and politics in SE Asia, social and cultural differences from Palaui Island in northern Luzon to Badjau, Palawan, and GSC, types of food available from island to island, differing female facial characteristics from island to island, etc., even including historical beginnings from thousands of years ago continuing throughout centuries to today, and subsequent invasions and/or occupational long-term relocations from other countries. While The Phil. Is. have a rich history causing the resulting current social and cultural mixtures of languages, customs, and behaviors, I have a deep respect for the various cultures within The Phil. Is. but realize I had better remain in the USA, although not that it's any better here. The world is now in a constant low simmer threatening to boil over at any moment, it seems. I'll still continue to look for your videos since I thoroughly enjoy your wit and depth of understanding. (Btw, I'm mostly a Sigma Male with "a-bit" of Beta traits and a few other Greek characteristics thrown into the mixture for social acceptance and congeniality.) And your additional ending Addendums always illicit either a smile or a chuckle. Thanks for your creativity.

I'm six weeks into a permanent move to PH, in Davao for now, and fortunately, I was prepared for about 70% of what living here has thrown at me, thanks in part to your videos. Actually, individual circumstances are so different for all of us that 70% is pretty damn good. I've met several fellow Americans. I'm amazed at how many did zero research before moving here, and struggle. They overcome, but they make it harder than it needs to be. Abraham Lincoln said "If I have 8 hours to chop down a tree, I will spend the first 7 sharpening my ax." and there is something to that.
@user-DrJoe-Future Жыл бұрын
Great reply. I'm one of the lucky ones that did his research. It helped a great deal, but nothing can fully prepare you for the real Philippines. I live in Cebu City and could not get internet service (PLDT) for my rented house. I tried for a month. So my Filipina fiancée had to get it for us. To the best of my knowledge, it was just because I was a foreigner although I had a permanent residency visa (SRRV). They are paperwork crazy here and many times ask for documents that make zero sense, and want them Apostilled. Luckily I had all my docs Apostilled before hand, but they want many original copies. It took me 4 months to get my driver's license after I turned in all the forms and paid, and had to fly to Manila to get it although they have multiple offices in Cebu City. They have no integrated national tax system. My wife worked for the Philippine Government in Mindanao for 5 years where she opened her tax account and paid her taxes at the BIR office. Now she lives in Cebu City, Cebu. But she had to fly back to Mindanao twice to get her Philippine Government tax paperwork straight and pay her taxes -- that's crazy. If you open a national Tax Account, it is local, not national. It's like if you had your first job in Miami, Florida, but now live in California, you have to fly back to Miami, Florida to pay your taxes. Two years later, I'm sure if she got it transferred to Cebu City yet.

Hi Pea, I totally agree that you need to view places objectively. In Manila I saw people sleeping in the streets, on the island I saw large numbers of dogs roaming around. On Bantayan Island in fact every evening a large group of dogs would walk along the beach and back again with no sign of any owner with them. My experience so far (based on a 3 week trip) is that I could probably adapt and be happy living there however a longer trial run would need to be done to confirm. I think that's the best advice you could give anyone (and I'm sure you have before) is to live there for an extended period before committing to a permanent move.

On Bohol, I rented a scooter. While the rental owner was doing paperwork I used my iPhone to make a detailed walk-around video of the bike. Three days later when I turned the bike back over to her and her male assistant, at the port where we were about to board a ferry, she showed up late, just as the ferry was getting ready to shove off and then she pointed out a small scratch on the front fender, told me I'd damaged the bike and she would keep my 1500p deposit (that was more than the 1200p three-day rental cost). What a rip off. But I pulled out the video, scrubbed forward to the point where I had zoomed in on that very scratch and showed it to her. When making such a video, always end the video by moving the camera from the bike back to the rental agent filling out the paperwork, to show that the video was made at the time you were picking up the bike. She backed off, handed me back my deposit and we were on our way. The scam is well oiled, catches the victim about to miss their ferry and without evidence to refute the accusation. Be prepared and you won't be taken.

Awesome video! I lived in Lapu Lapu 10 months and can vouch for the things you said. Grab taxi is way better than regular taxis - most of those guys were really scumbags. The grab drivers were cool. Dogs everywhere. Especially in Siquijor - they should call that the island of the dogs. One of my favorite things about the Philippines was getting a 1 hour massage for $5. I think it may be $7 now. It's definitely hard to make friends there, even with other expats. Like you said, many times the only thing you have in common is that you're expats. I found the easiest people to be friends with is your wife or girlfriend's family, as long as they're a good family. The water there definitely messed up my digestion. Overall, I think the way to go is to live in the province within an hour or two drive from the city, enjoy the nature, enjoy the girlfriend or wife, and count your blessings.

Three reasons I came back to USA after living in the Philippines: 1) Healthcare. Pea perfectly explains this. 2) My Filipina. My Filipina, that I met while living in the Philippines, was the breadwinner for her family. She built a business for her family to work in and make money to live. She was frustrated at the laziness and terrible spending habits of her family. She wanted to reap rewards for her hard work and efforts, which she didn't in the Philippines. With just a high school diploma, my wife makes way more than the average American after being here just 5 years. And she STILL helps her family regularly. 3) Snow. Not the snow in the Philippines, but lack of it. I didn't like the heat. Started in Cebu (Lapu Lapu), moved to Malaybalay in Mindanao... then finally we moved to Baguio. Loved living there, but still missed snow and seasons. We live in mountains in the USA now. We get warm summers, snowy winters, and beautiful weather in between. Overall, I could live in Baguio if I was younger and healthier. Healthcare is actually good there. Weather isn't bad. People, as in everywhere in the Philippines, are fantastic.

I've experienced most of those things while im there (go for a month out of each year) except for the accident ordeal or someone trying to rip me off over a rental (bought my own bike and put in my father in laws name as the primary). There are probably 3 things that drive me nuts when im there, but arent deal breakers. 1. the infidelity- I not only know at least half of the women were friends with have cheated on their man, and have been cheated on, but I am bombarded by women trying aggressively to draw me away from my wife, even her friends. mothers trying to get me to marry their daughters and leave my wife, and random women that do not stop hitting on me me even after i point to my ring, just walking down a street alone theyll drive up on their bike and stop in front of me to do it. I only get a break when my wife is with me. ( I'm not bragging here, it's weird to me, it doesn't happen in the states and I don't understand it) half of the random guys i've had a drink with there have tried, persistently, to get me to go with them to red light districts. These are things i've never heard anyone say, but it regularly happens to me when im there. I'm loyal, I don't like cheating or cheaters. 2. The unbeaaaarably slow government- we bought a plot of land almost 2 years ago, during the process the seller added on an extra 20 sqm, this has made the process of actually getting the title drag ooon and ooooon. I was wondering if i had been robbed until i flew there and confronted the seller and the bureau responsible for issuing the title. The slow speed of your government is enough proof for me to know I should never ever get myself in a jail there. 3. Lack of privacy and noise- your comment about the dogs and lack of compassion.. yeah see it everywhere there. keeping their dog on a half meter leash year round and forgetting to give it water for days or feed it making it bark and whimper nonstop. A few times I would just go do it myself to get some quiet and help that poor animal, it bothers me quite a bit. Privacy is HARD to get when around family, and it's harder for me because arriving at parties where 15 people approach me all at once yelling (friendly yelling) sends me back to riots i had to fight through working in prisons as an officer (ptsd). I get really wound up and have to leave and it takes awhile to bring myself back down. the lack of privacy makes it reeeally hard to just vent to my wife to chill out faster without everyone else who doesn't know english thinking im insane (northern province, many only speak Ilocano). Your comment about very little to do in the provinces is dead on, I can see why drinking is so popular. However, so is playing guitar and discos (plan on building my own eventually) I easily make friends with filipinos, punk music is popular with filipinos my age and thats my thing. Sometimes its boring, especially when it's too hot to do anything like go fishing or crab hunting, but it's worth it to be around people that are happy to see me. Sorry for the book. PH is where my heart is, with every sunbeam comes a shadow, but it's definitely more sunny in the Philippines.

I live in a rural area and most of these "issues" are just everyday life for me. But the Philippians is warm and winter here kills me. Every year I have a breakdown from the cold and dark. Just not dealing with climate inducing suicidal thoughts for six months of the year would be a life changer.
@LGR605 Жыл бұрын
Yes, same here. Even the thought of power loss in PI doesn't scare me as the cold won't set in. Lost power here last December due to ice storm. It got a bit nippy
@alanwright7498 Жыл бұрын
@@LGR605 I hear you. The insolation in my house is non existent. So it gets cold and quickly. And thats half the year. And its damp here. The same cloths that keep me warm if I am lucky enough that the temperature drops below zero do nothing in the damp. I currently have 4 layers of cloths on and I am still cold.

Very honest and accurate. After our last visit to Luzon a month ago we have totally changed our thoughts of moving to PI. Metro Manila is in serious decline from a lack of infrastructure, and horrid poverty. A five mile trip on EDSA will show garbage piled on both sides of the road and people sleeping on cardboard. If you choose the province to live you are deprived of just about all comfort items, to include medical. If you choose the big city the noise, cost, and filth will drive you crazy. Too many bloggers spread the myth of living a good life on social security with income as low as $900.00 a month, that is so irresponsible of them to do so. For us we plan to visit at least every other year and be glad when we get there and glad when we leave.

Love it. The Philippines is a fantasy come true for guys like me. I cannot find even a half way decent woman in America. I am handsome, fit, 6-0. blonde hair and blue eyes. My problem is that I tell woman that I love God and want to live a life pleasing to Him. That has scared every girl I have met for years. But the opposite is true in the provinces in your beautiful country. So, as soon as I can sell my place, I am moving there for good. Gusto Ko gamay ug lipis babaye. Lami kaayo. Yes, I love going down there.

For foreigners driving in the Philippines I highly recommend you install a dash cam. The recorded video goes a long way as evidence of what happened if there is an incident. I drive an electric golf cart around town, but installed a 3 way dash cam which includes forward, back and inside views. I've noticed that since I installed the cam, many drivers use more caution around me once they notice the cam in my windshield.

I’ve just returned from living in the PH for 3.5 yrs as an American expat…1.5 yrs in Manila, the last 2 in beautiful Dauin outside of Dumaguete. If I do move back to PH, it would definitely be to Dauin. I love so many things about it. There 2 main details keeping me considering if I want to return for good: stable internet… and driving. I have so many friends there - I WAS a social butterfly. My quality of life took a real nosedive returning here to Colorado (for the purpose of making a good income - which generally is much more difficult to do in the PH). I can mostly overlook all the other difficulties of living in the PH, but driving really scares me! And I’m talking about a car - I won’t drive a bike at my age (just over 50).

She is a very sweet gal about your age 33 I am 73 and she said she wants to be with me till I kick off. I,am ok with that if she is genuine She has not asked for any money ,said she is taking care of her grandpa who. Is 82 . I live in a mobil home park that said she can t live with because she is not 40. I have checked out moving my home to a all age park. It could cost between 5 and 15 thousand to move but I really love my he shed. Thats what I call it. Well time will tell wish I had your advice before I married my first wife, but she was pregnant and we lost the baby. Made it 28.5 years and she said she couldn't be married to me any more. I said not moving back to cold weather in the Midwest. So I have been divorced one year. You are one of the best people to listen too. Love the Pea. Mike

I ponder on the potential you have Pea for doing worthwhile things in the future. You are excellent at producing the videos and their content and wonder how long you can keep doing them before you run out of steam or material. It seems it would be wasteful for you not to become greater in your endeavours, whether it is to improve the lives of Phillinos by way of health or politics. I could never be sure of what the future holds for you but pray it brings greatness and happiness.
