Network engineer here, wanted to note some things: 1. It doesn't matter if you have the PS5 Pro with WiFi 7 if your access points don't support WiFi 7, or if they aren't configured correctly for WiFi 7. 2. WiFi 7 is very new and 99% of people won't have any noticeable benefits over WiFi 6, even if all hardware supports it. 3. You should ideally have the PS5 hardwired (GbE, avoid FE), which you did mention. 4. WiFi 5 should be sufficient if you have your PS5 hardwired, since obviously the Portal only supports WiFi 5. And you don't get any extra range out of the box with WiFi 6 or 7, that depends on radio hardware. 5. Channel width is very important in the case of wireless streaming. Too high can cause instability, too low can limit throughput. 6. In places where high speed internet is available (e.g., symmetrical gigabit fiber), and if you have a quality router, internet streaming from your own PS5 should be configurable to work just as well as Sony cloud streaming. Plus a lot more possible considerations I won't get into, but the point is, there's a lot of factors that will affect performance. (Disclaimer: I don't own a PS5 or PS Portal, and I personally think the PS Portal is not an ideal product in general.)
@MerkantoineАй бұрын
@@shayes.x the fact that phones can do the same thing without any issues on the same network should prove the point that it's a Sony specific problem and not wifi. I swear I'm going insane watching content creators talk about wifi 7 like it's some magical thing that's going to fix everything when most people still have their router in the basement in 2024 💀
@Seirra54Ай бұрын
It’s the lack of wired connection from the PS5 to the router that’s the problem. My partner has a Portal and had pretty bad input lag when her PS5 was on WiFi, but it largely improved when we ran an Ethernet drop to the console. It’s still not perfect, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was.

Obviously the steam deck costs some money, so you might argue its for those who cant afford a steam deck but you already own a phone and a ps5 controller. So this is really only for peole who can specifically afford a portal but not a steam deck and cant/don't access their ps5 very often. Its a niche market.

A few things to note. You don’t need to hard wire it directly to the modem/router. I have my ps5 in the basement and my modem on the first floor of my house. I used a power line adapter (fairly cheap on Amazon maybe 30$). I tested it and it’s pretty much as good as hard wiring it in terms of speeds and in terms of experience I’ve had 0 to minimal lag or stutter etc. Mind you I don’t play for several hours a day though I don’t have time For me, the portal is way better than playing on a phone using a separate controller. It’s not even close in terms of convenience and the size of the screen and ergonomics on holding it in your hand. It’s just not close. I can see how it’s not for everyone especially given the price it’s not cheap. But with the addition of cloud gaming it’s pretty good for me and I don’t care to use my phone for remote play ever draining its battery. The portal battery is insane.

The biggest deal with the 4.00 update, and my major beef previously with the Portal, is the fixed microstutter. Apparently remote play outputs at 59.75hz, and the portal screen 60hz. This update corrects that discrepancy and panning and lateral movement is now overwhelmingly smooth, to the point where the odd hitch doesn’t really bother me. I’d say for £200, if you have a decent library of games or subscribe to PS+, a decent WI-FI setup, then the Portal is a good device.

Streaming to the Steam Deck using Chiaki has an advantage over all other streaming devices as far as I can tell. You can enable HDR while streaming. So streaming looks insanely good on my Steam Deck. Also the Steam Deck OLED WiFi is much improved. I get no dropped frames or stuttering at all. My PS5 is hardwired though. The only issues I have are slight input lag, I can definitely tell but it’s really not that bad. The other thing is about 5 minutes in to my session, it will just fail to connect to the ps5. I have to close Chiaki and reopen and then I can stream for hours without issues. It is strange that it will do this ever single time. It also does this with moonlight though, so I think it is something with the Steam Deck. So my guess, the ps portal just needs better hardware. Definitely needs a better WiFi chip. But it also may need a better CPU to increase bit rate. Cranking it on the Steam Deck makes it extremely stable.

It does exactly what I need it to do and have not been disappointed with it. I’m an engineer with a background in networking and other areas so my house is properly set up with multiple hardwired PS5s and multiple access points around the house to provide a stable network connection at all times. Anything above WiFi 5 for the Portal would be irrelevant since it wouldn’t be able to effectively use that additional speeds anyway. I’ve had 0 connectivity issues during my year of using the Portal and it’s accomplished everything I’ve wanted it to do. However, this is still my third most used handheld at the moment, with the Steam Deck being in first, and Switch at second.

I hope the portal gets another update. My ideal idea for an update is to have it be like a PS5 without being an option for ‘remote play’ function. Meaning you don’t need to have the PS5 either on or rest mode when you access the portal. That way you can play any games on the portal wherever you go. I have games bought both digital & physical. The digital games are okay for me since I can play them, but if they somehow figure out a way to continue to play physical game copy on the PS portal without having remote play on will be impressive to me, but I know for a fact that it’s not even possible. That being said, I’ve gotten the portal very recently for christmas and it does have flaws. Internet connection mostly. Even when I get near the net router and it still get’s a connection problem. Just hope another beneficial update for the portal will come around.

Portal owner here, I like it. It’s not a separate game system, it allows you to play your existing system remotely. I have a medical condition that sometimes has me stuck in bed all day. I even considered buying another system for my bedroom. The Portal was a godsend. It allowed me to entertain myself with games I’d already purchased. Honestly, I’m not playing taxing AAA games when sick or sleepy, so I don’t struggle with lag. Buy what works for your life. Peace.

The point isn't that the Portal has no use case, but that there are many other devices that do it better for better value

@ Maybe, maybe not. I just think that it is an accessory for a niche market. Those in that market love it and aren’t looking for it to change. The other options were always available, so there’s no point in all this negativity and constant raging that this one thing isn’t like other things.

I held out on this and was very skeptical. When they opened preorders for the 30th anniversary stuff while buying the controller I decided to go for it. The first night was laggy and button presses were spotty. The next night I hard wired my ps5 on the opposite side of the house and put my portal on the second router and it’s been a really great experience. I do agree the price is a bit too high $150 feels like a fair price

I have my ps5 in my room and when I want to be around the family in the living room I use the portal. It’s very convenient to just pick it up and play because I leave it in the living room. I can use my phone but it’s annoying to carry a dual sense around and hooking it on and off to Bluetooth to my phone. I also want to use my phone at the same time. I’m playing a lot of single player games because I do notice the input lag on fast paced multiplayer games. I’m getting through my backlog of games like unicorn overlord.

I simply don’t understand the hate the portal gets, I haven’t had any issues whatsoever and to be fully transparent, I obviously prefer to play on my tv, however, I have a 1 year old kid, that I need to watch for hours and it’s just wonderful to get in his playpen and to be able to play ps5 games away from my tv whilst I take care of my kid. Remote play and the portal were designed for a niche group of gamers, it’s clearly not for everyone, so even though I try to understand where the complaints come from

Thank you for revisiting this because I was curious. I saw that 30th anniversary release and admit it makes the portal look a lot better but I don’t own a PS5 yet and still don’t quiet get where it fits into PlayStation’s vision. I love my steam deck but admittedly don’t use it much handheld anymore as I do docked. I do enjoy it on the couch for my first play though on hollow knight 😊 very fun so far I like the little grubs I think they’re called they’re cute and my niece got a plushie that makes the in game sound. Anyway, I don’t know what I’d use a Portal for even if I had a PS5 today as I’d be more of a couch gamer. I do like the idea of a docked setup for my office space to take between the rooms of the house but I can’t think of much else 🤔 it’s neat though but too expensive for my needs. I got a refurbished steam deck to save cost 😊 so the portal and PS5 is an investment for me. Edit: ooh 😯 saw the price was $199 that’s better 🤔 but I’m still not sure where it fits into the whole PlayStation ecosystem and cloud streaming but it looks good 😊

I've tried the remote play on my phone with the PlayStation backbone and at times it looks like dog water. But I got the PlayStation portal for about 3 weeks and I have loved every minute of using it. I use it at home on a hotel Wi-Fi on my hotspot with my phone and it works just fine and I love the device.

So I finally got a Portal (the 30th Anniversary model), and… I have yet to get it to connect to my PS5 - yes, it’s on Ethernet, yes it has a fixed IP, and yes, my WiFi is good - the Portal turns on the PS5 out of standby, but that’s it. I’ve tried Port Forwarding, the “Airplane mode” trick, phone tethering - nothing. I’m at wit’s end here. What’s even more frustrating is that I can connect fine from my PC using PS Remote Play (which is on the 2nd floor of my house), and I can’t even connect with the Portal when I’m sitting 10 feet away from my router. The kicker? I also paid the pro-rated price to upgrade to Premium, and low and behold, I can play cloud games no problem. Ugh…

Like many say, it’s a great ”Dad” option. Even better now with PS Plus streaming. Got mine on day one and while the experience was good enough for me from the start, it’s surely nice to see how it’s been improved over the year. I’ve played hundreds of hours on it, even remote connecting outside my home with (to me) no noticeable delays. Even sold my Switch as I just didn’t use it any more with the Portal around. One concern that the server streaming solves is that I’ve had the PS5 crash once or twice while away from home. With server streaming I don’t have to worry about that. I guess we’ll see what the future brings but wording at the PS Blog hints at both more games added or even games you’ve bought from the PS Store, so fingers crossed.

Biggest issue I have with any of these videos on the portal is it's always compared to handheld PCs that cost more. I don't play PC. Most other devices that are just designed to stream cost more than the portal, and if they are cheaper they're not that great at streaming or have really crappy ergonomics compared to the portal. It's also basically turn on and play. I'm not buying a $250-$900 dollar handheld just to stream PlayStation. That argument will never make sense to me 😂

Bob - Try plugging the PS5 Pro/console **directly into the modem** - Not the *router* but the actual modem itself. That will eliminate your issues. Please try this.

I love it for when I travel. I have a Legion Go. But sometimes it's nice to just have a lite, small $200 device to throw in the suitcase and not worry. Traveling with a $800 hand-held pc can be stressful sometimes. Or if the kid wants to play fortnight when me and the wife are watching TV. For $200 I can't complain.

Still the best US youtuber when it comes to telling the truth. I sent back my second PS Portal after giving it another chance with firmware 4.0: the input lag is still unbearable (for me). And my PS5 is wired to an 8 Gbps connection (yes, you read right, even though the PS5 only supports 1 Gbps :). I think that the choice of Wi-Fi 5 on this device is heresy.
@notesscrotes4360Ай бұрын
The PS5's shitty AMD encoder might be a bigger issue than the Wifi.
@dungo5337Ай бұрын
Is your Portal connected to a 5GHz network? If your PS5 is actually hardwired (make sure that it really is using Ethernet instead of Wifi) and your Portal is connected to a 5GHz network with acceptable signal strength. Then it will definitely work great
@gaorАй бұрын
@@dungo5337 In fact, my router automatically selects the frequency (2.4 or 5 Ghz). So I don't know exactly which frequency is preferred for the PS Portal. I'd have to dissociate the two bands to make sure I only connect to 5 Ghz, but if I do that and move too far away from my router, performance won't necessarily be good either (5 Ghz being better... as long as you're not too far from the access point). Anyway, I know I have a very low tolerance for lag in general. But even if this issue were resolved, we'd still have to solve the compression problems. When I tested Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on Portal and it started snowing in-game, the compression suffered a lot and the image was terrible. Even Netflix would have a hard time with that! Note that the experience is much better on Portal than on a phone with a DualSense, even on Wi-Fi 6. It really sucked on my smartphone.

"Never connect from outside your home network" - I can say from my testing (ethernet connected PS5 Pro playing metaphor Refantazio) that you can play games with no issues. Since I play slower RPG/turn based games I have not run into the issues you face. However playing games like Tekken 8 with faster input did lead to some slight lag but not too much. Also although I could stream from my steam deck there has been issues with it recently and on top of that the haptics on the ps portal feel much better.

I’ve got a tip for those who experience disconnection issues every ten minutes when streaming from the console: set up a guest network for the Portal exclusively. It resolved all problems I had with the device! Also, streaming directly from servers works really nicely. 🎉

As an owner of one: the major pros for me is the hardware/form-factor as in I LOVE the 8" screen I think it's my new sweet-spot for a portable and of course having a dualsense attached is also great. Cons are even with my PS5 hardwired and the portal on good 5GHz connection it's still worse lag/latency than Moonlight or even Chiaki so Sony still has some optimization to do and why it only has wifi5 for a dedicated streamer is still anybody's guess. One of those little baffling sony decisions like no disk drive on the PS5Pro or proprietary memcards in the Vita.

did u try turning off vrr, hdr, allm and setting the display out to 1080p before remoting from portal. I say this because I had a lot of issues at first and this actually helped it alot. It is a massive pain in the ass and I still sometimes do it if I have issues and restarting router doesnt' fix it. I wonder if it has something to do with the fact the ps5 is still sending a 4k signal to tv at same time which u can tell just by turning on ur tv. Maybe its more taxing or not converted/scaled somehow, but it seemed to help with mine. I feel like this is somethnig that shouldn't affect, but it is what it is.

As a successful video game content creator, you have a lot more options than the average person. So though I don't think you're "dumb," I don't think you objectively see it from the perspective of the average person. The Portal is $200. I paid half that for the backbone alone, that is not as comfortable in the hands, doesn't have the haptics/triggers of a DualSense or a rather pleasant 8" screen included in that price. So from a value proposition, I think the price of the Portal is rather compelling from that perspective. If I wasn't already grandfathered into Premium until 2029, from all my years of hoarding cd keys sales and lucky to have purchased a discounted PlayStation Now subscription during Sony's days of play before they moved to tiers, I would still be able to swing $18 a month, if there is something on the service I want to play. It's what I've been doing with Gamepass Ultimate, and that's $20 a month. Objectively, no other device would give you access to the PlayStation ecosystem at the Portal's price point for those interested.

And the argument "just use your phone" well your going to be changing that thing every year, otherwise your battery would be so dead ... Having a dedicated device for remote play is so much better
@JubalVoidАй бұрын
The backbone also gave you access to Xbox streaming, PC streaming, emulation, and Android games. The value issue with the portal is its lack of versatility, if you only play games on your PS5 then I can see the argument for it, but if you do anything else then other devices will make more sense, even considering price. For $80 more than the Portal a base Odin 2 will support any remote streaming option, emulate pretty much everything except the newest systems, and will chew through heavy Android games like genshin and call of duty. The only thing you lose as of this new update is ps plus streaming.
