I'd be very tempted to fit a solar panel on the roof to top up while parked in Summer

Unless you live on Mercury that probably wouldn't achieve much.
@SolarWebsite

@@darryljones3009 You're right. You _may_ fit a 100Wp panel on that roof. Depending on many circumstances (latitude, season, weather, shading, positioning, clean/dirty, etc) that _may_ produce 500-700 Wh (watt-hours) on a very good day. Where I live (the Netherlands) and where Andy lives (UK) you won't have very many of those days. On many days you's just be carrying it around as dead weight. WIth the Twizy's 6 kWh battery you would need about ten of those very good days to charge the battery completely. Put another way, one such very good day, might add about 8 km to the range. Not worth it. Put solar panels on your house, charge from there.

love the Twizzy and your videos - most cars these days are larger because of the safety features - side impact bars, curtain air bags etc - these developments and changes in the laws worldwide have meant that manufacturers have to make larger vehicles to fit it all in - look at the Nissan Micra as a point in case - tiny when launched but now anything but. Love your videos Andy - keep them coming, you are inspiring me to look for a Twizzy!

Its true that crumple zones take up space so like for like a modern car will be a little larger, but they don’t account for the morbidly obese tonka trucks that seem to be so fashionable these days. in my opinion it has more to do with people trying to use their vehicle to make up for deficiencies elsewhere.

The twizzy reminds me of a 4 wheeled version of that weird moped BMW used to make (I think it's the C1) where it had a full car cockpit minus the doors. It's got some charm to it.

This video was the recommended video after watching my own recent video about (electric) microcars in the Netherlands, where I came to pretty much the same conclusion: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGrPqmqAn9Z4mJI I loved your video, and I completely agree! We don't need a car anymore (living in Amsterdam), but if we did, an electric microcar like the Twizy or Biro would be perfect. I really hope that these are the future, because these smaller, lighter cars are so much more electricity efficient than a giant overweight Tesla or something. Greetings from Amsterdam!

And they also don’t require so much space! Imagine If these were the norm! We could have way smaller roads, parking lots, etc. And because they’re much smaller and typically slower, roads are safer too so people feel safer using bikes and scooters, or just walking. And things would be closer together without all those bulky roads and parking lots which further encourages biking, walking, etc. Would be a win-win-win all around!

My stepfather has a Twizzy and I know from experience how fun these things can be for running around town and how insanely maneuverable they are. Personally I work doing hot food deliveries which pretty much wipes out the Twizzy as I need to keep the food warm. If I could get something similar with a closed cockpit and heating then that would be ideal for the job that I do.

Love the Twizy! Ever since I've sat in the back of one while it being pushed round a little track in a big car park (it was at an EV testing event) I fell in love with it. It's really incredible how you can go round corners in it! I hope to buy one as my first car in 3 years, really don't need any more car than this :p

Hi, just had to say hi as a fellow twizy owner with the same windows and a power box as well, but my best mod was changing the seat to a smart four two heated vinal one. It makes it much nicer to drive as it absorbs the bumps, mine is a 2012 model

I’ve been very keen on getting a Twizzy. I couldn’t agree more on the practicalities for local trips. And I would definitely go for the power/torque upgrade. I’ve watched most of your videos incl heater builds. Have you tried a heated jacket? The battery rental is pretty steep for the Twizzy, it’s more than the Kangoo.

Wise words and another great Twizy video Andy. Every time I watch one of your Twizy vids it makes me want one more and more, but the cost in Ireland is just way out of my reach - I'd be nervous about buying a used one because the battery would probably be no good

I agree, this is the future, loved this since it came out. Would love one as no longer own a car because I live so close to work. The things that put me off getting one is (as far as I'm aware) you don't buy it you basically rent it, well buy it and rent the batteries or something? Either way it's too dear for my low waged job to afford. Space could maybe be a bit better and some of the mod cons (not that I've been in one!) but guess this would add even more to the price. I'm sure given time prices of electric cars will come down in price but for now I will carry on walking to work and using public transport. Nice car tho' and thanks for posting.

why don't more people do it? the answer is: especially in big cities, where most of potential users are living, we don't have the luxury of our own parking space where we can fit a power socket. It's a bit unpractical for most of us to run 30m of extension lead from our flat to the car.

@pcx 2019 nothing to do with being lazy. More like: i need a car to be ready to go at any given time. No battery-pack carrying (making sure it's charged), search a plug somewhere not at the actual destination, etc. The idea is 15 years too early, the infrastructure isn't ready.

I only found your KZbin clips after I'd bought my second hand TWIZY. After 68 years of driving models such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Citroen CX etc I have now fallen in love with this super little, so very clever piece of design. Another example of French flair. My appearance has now prompted another local purchase, & I hope it will prompt others to seek E.V.s as well, despite the current ridiculous pricing in the U.K..

Brilliant! At last another petrol head that can appreciate how refreshing this little vehicle is! I’ve had mine for a couple of years now and I’m still loving it. The rawness and simplicity just reminds me of the old hot hatch days (Renault 5 turbo, Fiesta XR2) great you have influenced others, it’s fascinating how many conversations I’ve had with people in car parks about the Twizy. I’m always late back when I pop out to the shops! I may have something interesting in the pipeline soon with regards to the supply of Twizys without the battery lease. I believe there’s a real desire for the Twizy in the UK but it’s crippled by the battery lease and high cost. Watch this space. Have you purchased a power box yet?

What I would worry about is visibility - seeing far enough ahead around other cars / lorries to see what is ahead instead of waiting for brake lights from other cars... the small size and getting crunched by anything else on the road bigger than an e-bike... and those perspex side windows look like they would scratch and go cloudy,,, instead of staying clear like glass would... what sort of load can they carry - could you put a rack on to carry a mountain bike or such, or 50 kilos of load (groceries, bag of dog food etc) Might bot be practical for the distances in Australia (even though I am in a city, still bigger cities) do they accept fast chargers from Tesla style recharge stations, or just house-level charging? And finally, In Australia, open wheels like it has are illegal, do they have a mudguard option to stop the spray from the wheels, and to make it look a lit like say an Ariel Atom or such...

If you can do a video on a mod to add another 15-20kwh of 18650 batteries and a Type 2 connector, it would be a perfect car for 90% of single person journeys. Keep the petrol car for the long distance. That would probably give it 200miles of range?
@thirdenvoqation7735
@thirdenvoqation7735 4 жыл бұрын
Been looking at one as a secondary vehicle, but realistically for where I live I have too many hills which would kill the battery range and range is a major detractor for me as most of my 'short' journeys I undertake are 20-30 mile round trips. As mentioned by many other people, if the Twizy (or any other micro-car) have a better range, doors and some creature comforts they'd probably sell a lot more. I've driven a Twizy (borrowed a friends as he was looking to sell it), and they are fun but not always the most practical especially if you live in a flat with no readily accessible charge points (which is a major deterrent for all electrics). All this said, if you can get a second hand one with no battery contract and can go zero energy with solar wind it's a no brainer, but again Renault makes no effort to push these vehicles and arguably they are their own worst enemy with the mandatory battery hire.

As a motorcyclist, my 1st question is are the breaks upgraded to go with the power mod? If not its probably lethal , especially to pedestrians
@andykirby
@andykirby 4 жыл бұрын
I ride electric motorcycles. The brakes in the Twizy are really good as standard. But because its electric it has regenerative braking which is enhanced when you do the power upgrade, you can actually modify the braking strength and it’s incredible. This thing stops alright 😁

That Mr. Bean show was quite awhile back now. I wonder what he would drive if his show was made today? Back then, the ingredients for his car humour included small, impractical and ridiculous. Some recipes are timeless, aye?

I get to work (about 12 km) every day in an electric moped (”Vespa style”) and I was actually into the Twizy for a while, but it lacks one very important advantage of my current moped: It's too wide, I can't advance in traffic queues the way I can with a moped. I would be more interested in something like the Toyota i-Road or similar. And Twizy's suspension is horrible. Like a bicycle or something. Ridiculously hard.

Personal transport ( ie single person electric) is the future for inner city travel be-it small cars like this or those adult electric scooters that look like choppers (pic in the link below) , they are perfect for the 'short' journey to work or for the student going to University and they could quite easily be accommodated in cycling paths/lanes . The stalling point is the restrictive legislation that is outdated and idiotic ,although there are safety concerns of normal cars/vans/lorries/buses squashing the rider due to either the scooter driver acting dangerously or the vehicle driver thinking that the road belongs to them. As a car driver and cyclist from personal experience the biggest issue is that there are far too many w*nkers with driving licenses. When you think that that little low power 'green-ish' mode of transport is illegal BUT ANYBODY can ride a horse and cart on the roads you have to admit that something is wrong. Were i live in the North it is a regular occurrence to see traffic held up behind a horse and buggy/cart and quite often driven by kids of about 12 , these are not travellers or Gypsy's but local kids and the police do NOTHING , but, if they find you riding a scooter you can be fined and be given points on your license. balkangreenenergynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/pecica-arsat-industrie-20191023142711_cr.jpg

do you think it would be feasible to fit it with solar panels and configure it to trickle charge using solar? Someone did the same to a Nissan Leaf on youtube. the range of 50 miles isnt that good imho, something around 75 or more would be more feasible.

Seriously, I wonder if a trickle charge would affect the battery longevity? Which could be a factor if people are required to lease and replace batteries? I actually do think this car has a place and that would be on a beach or a golf course.

Visitors to Bermuda are not allowed to rent cars--only Twizies or scooters. (this might not be the case for UK citizens but it is for the rest of us) We rented one for a week. Very convenient but the back seat isn't exactly a comfortable place to be and with two people, trying to squeeze in some grocies wasn't real easy. The Twizies in Bermuda didn't have side curtains either so it could get a little cool and breezy--especially in the back seat. Nevertheless, micros are surely the way to go and I wish they were being imported (or made) in the U.S. Japan, China, and European countries make all kinds of variations. Why they aren't available in the U.S. is beyond me (probably some stupid bureaucratic "laws" disallowing them). Thanks for giving them some exposure on KZbin.

How does it compare with a Smart car ( by M-B)?
@AlexChristaki
@AlexChristaki 4 жыл бұрын
They are quite different. The twizy drives like a Go-Cart, the Smart Car is small ev that drives just like that. Performance is good in both, but the Twiz feels like a drive. The Smart Car I felt was so badly made inside, although is fun to drive. The problem is that MB guarantee the batt for 8 years, after that your £16k is worth nothing. The twiz is half that too.

Also im wondering maybe if you could put a contact button somewhere on your website so its easier for people to reach you. Thank you for taking the time to help me Anth
