Just sent my one back to the shop. It sounds great, yes !! But the UI is not like using an analogue synth with a knob per function. For $%^& sake, I work in Serum ( A virtual synth) and it's 10 times easier to program than the S1, and I loath programming virtual synths. This got to me after a while, and I thought, ok this is not a synth I enjoy programming at all. But if you're into hidden functions and menu diving, go for it, it really has amazingly good sound and FX. If you're thinking I'm some old fart who doesn't know how to even plug in a synth, I built my first Moog clone at 16, and owned quite a few well known synths like Juno's Yamaha DX7, Ensoniq, and recently a Hydrasynth deluxe (which is totally digital and has menus - But has a very intuitive workflow which I love). The S1 is totally digital, and if you're aiming for deep powerful bass, good luck with that. I have a Behringer D and it utterly destroys the S1 as a bass synth. I tried substituting the S1 for the D part, in a piece ambient music, and basically the S1 bass got lost somewhere in the mix. It doesn't have the raw smooth power of an analogue synth, and ends up sounding very raspy, even with the sub oscillator on. But for the immediate Wow factor the S1 destroys the D because of the great effects engine. It it's a matter of taste, and function in the end. Have fun making music, and at least try the S1 out, you might end up loving it.
@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic5 ай бұрын
Thank you for the accurate feedback. I agree that bass is not the strongest point of the S-1. I think that it works great with mid range sounds, and if you need fat deep basses you have to look somewhere else, as you do. I don't feel like it's too unfriendly to program, but i guess that's kind of subjective. Anyway, of course as any other machine, it has strong and weak sides, but it's surprising to me how much you con do with just one synth alone. Cheers!

I would like to extend my guitars + effect pedals world, so I ordered the S1, but still wondering if the P6 could give more? I can't find any relevant comparison between S1 and P6 regarding to sound range, sequencing, usability and so on. Is there any aspect in which S1 can't be substituted by the P6 and vice versa? Do you have any insights about the main differences between these two devices, apart from sampling or not sampling? In my dumbness I can think that P6 can sample any sound of the S1, can modify these in any way and also has a sequencer, so wons the match agaist S1 by 6-0, no question. On the other hand I couldn't find any evidence of this theory. The best would be to have both at home, but my wife has a different opinion, regarding to how many noisy gadgets should I buy and spread in the living room. Then P6 being the first device would be a good option, or choosing S1 from the Aira series was a better option?
@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic19 күн бұрын
Hi. I understand the issue with your wife 😆 I think they are very different machine with different approach and purpose. A sampler doesn't generate sounds, it allows you to manipulate what you feed it. It's more versatile but also less immediate and require a creative input from you to get started. The s-1 is a synth, it's plug and play, it allows you to start creating the moment you switch it on. Of course sonically it's more limited but it's not intended to be a complete workstation, it's an instrument like a guitar or a piano. I hope it's useful. Cheers
@ret0110119 күн бұрын
@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic Thank you very much for your reply. I got it. Meantime I watched and listened a lot of videos. I raised a bit the budget and detached myself from the Airas heading to Sonicware Livens. I already placed a preoder for an Ambient 0. Now waiting. If it will behave and perform as expected then (sometime in the far future) maybe I will order a Liven Texture Lab, too. Here the Arturia Microfreak is a strong contender having more appeal for me than a pure sampler. About the S1, being a noob and having a very flat learning curve I have to study more. I like the sounds which can be dialed, but I am far from knowing in fact what am I doing. Until now I learned how to use the sequencer. For the rest of the magic I have to spend more time watching again and again the in depth reviews and experiment with what I see. I enjoy learning as much as I like creating or playing music, so I am hapy with my toys. My biggest complain about the S1 is the missing of any stereo pan settings. Not capable of ping-pong delay, for instance. The next missed feature is that the Audio Mix input can't be processed. It is just mixed dry as it is. Thinking how nice would be modulating a guitar sound with the S1. As far as I know the Liven Ambient 0 can do this. I have to check myself after arrival.
@ElectroMagnetic_AmbientMusic18 күн бұрын
@ret01101 hi there. Well the synth is mono as most of the synths but the reverb is stereo, so it enhances the sound a lot. A stereo ping pong delay would have been great too, but I can live with it. You can also use an external effect for more variety. What would have been a game changer is the possibility to apply effects to the mix input. I agree that's quite a mistake they made there. But since it's a budget synth I suppose it's part of the deal. Keep on experimenting and learning! Have a great time. Cheers

It expands on the SH101 by adding polyphony and the two effects which are really nice. The sequencer is easy to use and timing is tight. I love the USB C and not a cheap USB minijack. It's digital but it's still a kind of subtractive synth. As opposed to something digital like a sample player, where you can't alter the parameters. The argument is a bit like arguing that an electric guitar is not a guitar and that only acoustic guitars are real guitars. Maybe some leap of logic can convince someone of that, but a musician is going to treat these as the instruments that they are most similar too, without worrying too much about what's under the hood.
