So this drive is perfect for storing my game library? Fast reading, reasonable writing and cheap mass storage.
@getconnectednow4 жыл бұрын
Write activity is pretty minimal for games after they are installed. If you don't have a slot for an NVME PCIe SSD then this will work nicely. Especially if you have your games and apps loaded on a conventional platter-based drive. The increase in performance would most certainly be noticeable.

I'm aware of the writing speed dropping down to very 'abysmal' levels due to the cache being used up, but if all I'm going to do with the QVO is turn it into a game drive, will it be just the same as any other SSDs that are deemed much better like an EVO? Or at least perform nearly the same? Because if so, then I can just replace my 2 1TB WD BLACK HDDs with 2 2TBs of the QVO.

Hi! I'm a bit lost, which one should I choose for only game storage? The 860 EVO or this 870 QVO? Thx for advice
@getconnectednow4 жыл бұрын
The QVO series is built to give larger available sizes at more affordable prices. Its downsides are illustrated in the review. The EVO series is more performance-oriented and will give a faster and more consistent performance at a higher cost over the QVO per GB. Games are now getting fairly huge so more storage at a lower cost is needed and the QVO addresses this well. Since games are installed once and operations are mainly read-only after that, the QVOs read speeds are more than adequate for loading games as fast as possible over a SATA connection.

Just ordered this for my PS4 pro after my last hard drive got corrupted I hope the 870 QVO is compatible with my PS4 pro. The 860 EVO is overall a bit faster. The longevity is also a better overall. It has a bigger cache so it clears faster when you start transferring monster video files as we showed in the video. But if you don't transfer monster files then they will probably perform more or less the same in real world.
@elmergloo32593 жыл бұрын
I have a similar question and here is what I’ve found so far. In short it is relatively slower compared to other SSDs out there, but the price is much more affordable per terabyte. My potential use case is I have a media server with a bunch of my movies I saved onto a 4TB hard drive. I’m in constant fear of my hard drive failing or falling off my desk and getting damaged so I want an SSD big enough to hold all my stuff since in general they are more resistant to hazards or accidents than HDDs are. My problem is I almost have more than 4TB so I need an SSD bigger than 4TB and this 8TB qvo seems to be the only option. The qvo has a shorter warranty of 3 years compared to 5 years on the EVO. My understanding is that SSDs wear out faster the more you write to them. So if you are moving large files like video editors do you will wear out the drive fast. The EVO will last longer at writing new data to the drive. With my use case for a media server I just need to move my data one time then I can basically read from it indefinitely without really wearing out the drive in any significant way. So it seems like the QVO drives are best for just storing data long term, but not for frequently moving large amounts of new data. I guess neither drive is better. It just comes down to your use case. One last funny thought. I bought the Samsung 512GB 950 Pro years ago and it had like a 200 terabyte write endurance. Im just a average PC user that does some games, work, 3D modeling, etc and after 3 years my Samsung Magician software said I had written only 8TB of data on that drive during the time I used it. The Samsung 870 QVO advertises a 2,880 terabyte write endurance and people seem to be pointing at this number like it is a major flaw to the drive. Even though it will last 14x longer than a SSD I paid $350 for 5 years ago. Given that information I personally feel like 99% of consumers who buy this drive have absolutely nothing to be worried about.

Can this be used as an external hard drive, or is it to replace internal hard drive?
@getconnectednow3 жыл бұрын
It absolutely can be used that way in addition to being an internal replacement drive. However, if you are using it on the daily as a storage device, you might be better off getting something that was purpose built with an enclosure already integrated. You can save a few dollars buying an enclosure on your own and fitting the drive in it. While there are many enclosures on the market that will fit it, sometimes the quality is not so great, or there is a chipset issue that prevents it from working altogether. If you get one already built into an enclosure you get the benefit of a complete warranty from the manufacturer as well as compatibility testing. Western Digital and Samsung both make great external SSD drives. Lacie, Sandisk and G-Tech as well if you are a professional creator looking for a more durable solution.

@getconnectednow4 жыл бұрын
Familiar with the brands. But not familiar with those specific products, unfortunately. As to why Samsung has a lower TBW lifespan, it's because this drive is not built specifically for use in situations where rapid write and rewrite of new data is required. Instead, they focused on building larger drives to hold more things that you want to read from at a relatively fair price per GB. That's why it would be great for a movie or music collection as an example. The majority of the time you would read from the drive and not write to it. As to where you should buy, we can only comment on Canadian retailers, but Canada Computers or Amazon Canada would be our first picks.

I ordered a 2TB Samsung QVO SSD and a UGREEN 2.5" SSD enclosure (USB C to A [3.1 Gen 2]) from Amazon, should be here tomorrow. I'm hoping it'll work well for my PS4 library. One recent reviewer for the enclosure said they used it with a 2TB WD Blue SSD with no issues, so hopefully I get good performance. Not sure how heat dissipation will work, but I don't usually game for extended periods of time. I hope 2 TB will be enough for my PS4 games in the long-term, while the internal system storage should be fine for the few PS5 games currently or soon-to-be available. Once the internal NVME expansion slot becomes active, a 2TB NVME SSD I think will last me for the life of this console generation.
@getconnectednow3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like some good choices. Heat shouldn't be a huge worry in the short term. If you do find issues with heat you can always upgrade the enclosure to something with more ventilation. But if you plan on going to NVME then this should be a good way to tie you over. Let us know how that all goes.
@HeartlessPhoenix3 жыл бұрын
@@getconnectednow Thanks! So far it seems to be performing well. Launching PS4 titles from the external SSD does not appear to be any slower than when they were installed directly in the internal console storage. I'll probably keep this for my PS4 library for the life of the console and use expanded NVME internal storage in the future for PS5 games. As far as heat goes, it did get somewhat warm the day I got it, but that was probably due to me moving over or installing almost 500GB of data onto it in a short period of time. The amount of reading that goes on for a typical gameplay session is much smaller by comparison, it doesn't appear to heat up much if I'm just playing a game for a few hours. Glad I didn't run into any compatibility issues with the enclosure, that was the part I was most concerned with!
