Hi Brandon! Here’s my general comment to your channel: Extremely useful! I both own an older Evinrude and occationally get assigned one at work. You have helped both me and customers breathe new life into these legendary engines. Thanks a whole lot and greetings from Sweden!

Nicely done! My motor vibrated off of the transom and swam about 5 circles underwater (cables all held). The actual Engineer-friend of mine that gave the boat to me (VERY kind), had locked the hand fasteners, but did not through-bolt the motor. Long story short, miraculously, the motor started that day--it is the 1985 version of yours, looks JUST like it--and is running PRETTY darn well but the starter is starting to "screech" a bit. This video helped me locate my equipment and also to potentially tease it out if and when it--the starter--truly gives up the ghost! Thanks buddy!

Lol.. Your video is funny, I love it. I have a 40 Johnson motor from the 60's. I kept trying to start it at the dock and it kept wanting to turn over. But my dumbass, never hooked up the gas line to the engine. And now all I'm getting is a click sound. I probably ruined the starter or solenoid trying to start it over and over. I was my first time out since winter and I got ahead of my self in excitement. Didn't check everything beforehand lol... I'm not sure how to use the multimeter or settings to put it on.

Did this last weekend to figure out that my starter was toast. Ha. Who needs a multimeter when you've got a hot wire
@papa49883 жыл бұрын
I took my starter into a part store to have it checked, they said it was bad. I took it home and cleaned it up and used graphite spray for lubricant. Reinstalled and now the starter is trying to turn it over. I did this that Mr. Reynolds points out by taking my right side hot wire on solenoid and touched the left and it sparked, so I had to order a new solenoid installed it and now it's still not turning over. I just ordered a new starter so I hope that helps. Just sucks having to order parts when I have a old motor. 1991 25 HP Johnson. I did additionally find a blown fuse that runs from a overheating sensor ( I assume) on the back of the rear of the engine with the water drain tube coming out. No luck with changing that either so now I'm just waiting on a new starter, but thank you for the great videos. Gives a novice tinkerer a chance at owning a functioning boat. I just didn't realize how much time and money an old boat would take to make functionable and safe for my family.
@craigconcrete59369 ай бұрын
@@papa4988 you think it sucks ordering parts for an old motor?!? What really sucks is ordering parts for a new motor that shouldn't need anything because it's still new! WIth old motors it's to be expected.

Using a multimeter I have power to the solenoid. Doesn’t make a sound when I try and start it. Either power doesn’t run to the starter from the solenoid or the starters not working. Or even the ignition switch is done! Don’t have a clue yet
@BrandonsGarage3 жыл бұрын
well you can use a screw driver to jump the power from the positive battery to the solenoid yellow wire; if it turns you know its a wiring issue. Could he the ignition switch, neutral switch, or youre not even in neutral. if it doent do anything, its the solenoid or the starter.
@africanjew15963 жыл бұрын
I’ve been able to get the solenoid to click, and just did your test as shown in the video and I could’ve gotten it to start up. Is this a wiring issue or does this mean the solenoid is bad?
