As a tip to save evenore money on gas, CONVERT your older 4x4 to run on propane! There are conversion kits as cheap as $1800 US with the tank! And since Propane is $1.25 USD a gallon in some parts you can save a bundle. The engine management system on any post-2005 can easy handle propane and it won't damage engine component AND since it's a cleaner burning fuel, your engine last even longer! My cousin has been running his 1995 Land Rover Discovery on propane since 1998 so 24 years later it's STILL going strong on the same engine! Many states and provinces offer rebates so the conversion becomes less than a few hundred bucks! Try propane!

Maybe a lot of people just plan on doing the type of offroading they did on this trip though, which means you also don't want the bronco with the huge tires. @@guidominadisospiro3553 my point is that neither vehicle was pushed anywhere near it's limits - so it wasn't really unfair. But I had no idea that the 4Runner was this amazing real-life Stomper (4x4 toy when I was a kid 😂 ). I went online after buying it and joined the FB group and I hear everyone asking, "what tires / suspension / luggage rack / camping gear should I get???" haha I was shocked, shocked I tell you 🤣 So apparently I got the "mall crawler" package LOL because I use it to get my groceries and run to visit my family and friends. But, then the 4Runner is still rocking a comparative package that it has enjoyed since it hit the market in 2010. There are previous owners that may have had 4 or more 4runners in that span of time. Sorry, I know the Toyota has a great reputation for reliability and durability. However, I am not able to overlook the archaic, underpowered engine with the 5 speed transmission. Even the interior, tech, and fuel economy are way behind best of class. I realize for this particular test the Bronco's fuel economy was worse but if you look at EPA estimates at a more comparable engine, tires, and trim - even the Bronco would have faired better. I looked at the 4runner last year but ended up with a '21 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (the last year of the WK2 platform)- yes, that platform is older as well but has been updated over the years. Offered better tech, better mileage, more luxurious ride, better ground clearance, more power, better towing, std. A/T tires, and many other std. features - sunroof, power folding mirrors, front power seats, 4 heated seats, heated steering wheel, a modern 8 speed transmission, ELSD, etc. - many of which didn't come on the 4Runner. Reliability? - we'll see but I have a lot of confidence in the proven Pentastar engine with its bulletproof ZF 8 speed transmission.
