The Wrangler and Bronco definitely have more modern features which makes the 4Runner feel basic (I've driven all 3) but I actually don't mind that about my 4Runner. It has everything I need and nothing I don't. A small 2/1 lift with some good 33' tires for some extra clearance paired with A-TRAC is all I've ever needed to get through, what I consider some pretty rugged terrain. I live in Northern Saskatchewan which is a pretty desolate place especially during the winter, where you definitely do not want to break down, (-48c last week) so having a reliable vehicle is the difference between life and death. In the 7 years and 320,000km I've had my 2014 SR5 I've never so much as has a flat tire. Of course that mileage on this kind of terrain, stuff will wear out no matter what, like shocks ball joints, tie rods, etc. But I've always made it home. To me that makes up for any of its minor shortcomings. I'm sure whatever you choose you'll be happy with as they're all great vehicles, but if reliability means anything to you, the 4Runner, in my experience, will always get you home at the end of the day.

Bronco has none of those Issues. That being said the Bronco is the king of IFS and big rubber and Yoda is leader of the sub 35" tire gang where most mall crawlers live. SAS tons into a 4R and all downsides are removed except SA steering but anyone on 40s knows IFS handling/steering isnt a priority anymore. The best experience I can give was when my family drove down to the outer banks from north nj in our then breaks new trd off-road 4Runner. With 4 grown adults and all out stuff for 2 weeks roof rack loaded up it was the most pleasant roadtrip I’ve experienced. The ride is just fantastic. Then we met up with friends who live there to go driving on the beach. On oem highway tires aired down to 20 we had zero issues in the sand. Eventually we tried to get it stuck and could not. To me a “lead vehicle “ should be one that has a track record of reliability and ruggedness simply because everyone will be dependent on that vehicle and the experience of the driver. The 4Runner has that record…from the documented retracing of the “McKenzie Trail” across Canada to the documented Expedition through Central America and all the way to the southern tip of South America in Argentina.
@SCORCH4x43 жыл бұрын
Our last lead vehicle was very similar to the 4Runner....a 2010 Nissan XTerra, so we agree that the 4Runner is capable. However, a lead vehicle also needs to be decent at recovery, which the Xterra most certainly was not.

Same predicament. I had a chance to drive all and ended up choosing Jeep Rubicon. 4Runner looked good but I hated the interior, it felt more like an SUV and lacked some basic features, like a side handle by drivers side, as well as lack of ability to easily add modifications. Bronco I couldn’t figure out, liked the roomy interior and rear tailgate that resembled the Jeep, but again something felt off about some things, like an awkwardly placed handle by the shifter. Jeep, on the other hand is like a Lego set, you a take things off or add things in a breeze.

I think they all look cool and are capable off road. The question would be is what do you like? It's really hard to listen to what other people like unless you drive them yourself but it is good to do the research just like your doing in real time by inviting other owners of different brand types. It's all going to depend on how it fits you! Are you going Overlanding and exploring 70 or 80% of the time or is it going to be a garage queen or daily driver. I would have to say that I like reliability that's my number one pet peeve so the 4runner is my number one choice and it looks cool and comfortable and is great on the highway. Just research the Edmunds Reviews and see what you can live with. I don't like being stranded on the road or trail from a breakdown and from my research the 4runner is number 1# in reliability. So the 4runner wins in my book! Again it's all going to be on what you like and can live with.😊

If you want the unique experience of a very unique maneuverable vehicle that you can pull the top off, fit in tight spaces get the Wrangler, otherwise get the 4-Runner. The Bronco is having a lot of service issues, maybe when they get those eco boost engines figured out, it might be a better deal.

Just traded my my 2018 4Runner TRD off-road for a new Bronco Badlands w/Sasquatch. No regrets so far. Owned 2 Wranglers (JK and JL), 2021 4Runner, and currently have a 2022 Tacoma 4x4 which I love. JL Wrangler highway ride/steering was poor even after extensive steering upgrades, high end shocks, etc. Great offroad. 4Runner bullet proof but dated and dealers have them overpriced right now.. One Florida dealer in Tampa has 100 Broncos on their lot. Broncos are continuing to drop in price due to poor sales. Bronco IMO offers best combination of power, offroad capability, and daily driver. See what the new 4Runner will bring to the table when it comes out later this year. Toyota #1 on long term value and reliability.
@mikevandolah78112 жыл бұрын
had a '18 Jeep Rubicon-Recon Edition. Road noise and cross winds while driving on the highway present a real issue. Steering is like herding cattle down an interstate. Off roading is where this unit shines. The 4 runner is superior in every category on the highway comfort, steering and no road noise whatsoever. Off roading on steep descents like the FJ can present a problem. The addition of a forward camera has greatly improved this problem. Towing an Air Steam behind while off roading will present a problem with the power.

I had the same decision I needed to make not long ago, but was not looking for a lead vehicle of sorts and I was not interested in the Wrangler, and had the Gladiator on my list. I am also not brand biased and I appreciate everything. I was excited to see what the Bronco could do, and I still enjoy them and can’t wait to see what happens with the platform, but the first year always scares me. Especially with a Ford product. The Gladiator really had my attention, and the newer platform has gotten much better reliability wise. However, in the end I had placed my order for a new 22 TRD ORP, in the Lunar Rock color. The 4Runner, especially jumping from one to another at the most recent auto show, provided much more room and comfort, and it just felt put together better. They updated the tech for the newer years which brings the interior more in line with the competition. Also, the legendary reliability and bulletproof motor and trans was also a big thing for me when I plan to be off the beaten path. No matter what you pick, you have excellent options! I wish I could own all three 😂

The Jeep is great, but reliability and on road driving manners could be an issue (Not so much on road manners, I think they drive fine). The 4Runner would be my top choice, but it lacks power big time, I'd have to buy a Supercharger if I went the 4Runner route, which would add to the cost. So as of now, the Jeep is on the top of my list, especially with all the engine options. It's too bad other auto manufacturers won't make similar off road type vehicles. Anyway, thanks for the video, I really enjoyed watching it.

The jeep. And bronco are on a league of their own, the 4 runner is a SUV that can off road. When you can take door and roof off it's a whole different animal. Regardless of the capabilities, the 4runner isn't a roof/dorrs off vehicle.

I have been trying to determine which to keep, my 2019 4R TRD Offroad or my new Big Bend V6 4 door for daily commuting and light to medium off roading. The Bronco is definitely more powerful and has more tech which is also more prone to expensive failure. The TRD is nicer, probably more reliable and just seems a little more robust and of course has a hard top which provides more security, the full perimeter frame door windows provide for more rigidity, quietness and better sealing than my soft top Bronco which doesn’t truly seal above the doors. The soft top just basically overlaps the roof frame weatherstripping. I’d be afraid to take it through a car wash unless I need a wash also. I can slide my fingers all the way in between the weatherstripping and the soft top and the window sides don’t seal well either. I’ll probably order a hard top whenever they become available. I doubt I’ll remove the Bronco doors very often. The Bronco is bigger and has a bit more cargo area. Another positive to the Bronco is that it has actual removable bumpers. I recently backed into a pole on the 4R which smashed the plastic so called rear bumper. The entire wrap around bumper/rear quarter panel piece has to be replaced and repainted. To install real aftermarket metal bumpers on the 4R takes a moderate amount of cutting of the plastic. Not sure which vehicle to get rid of. If I want to do some serious off-roading and not worry about tearing up my expensive new vehicles, I’ll pull out my ‘84 Chevy K5 Blazer and trailer it with my 5.7L Hemi Ram.

1. Wait for the new 4runner 2. Bronco 3. Jeep, but 4xe or diesel 4. Rivian, because who doesn't want 820+ hp?
@SCORCH4x43 жыл бұрын
So much to tackle here, and many will be addressed in a video when we get and unveil our new rig. However, the Rivian was under consideration. The reality that many of our ride are overnighters which cover a lot of ground across backcountry where there are zero chargers...well...that was that. The 4Xe interested us but it only delivers 30 miles a charge, less off road, so a few hours into any ride it would be a less capable vehicle that if we had put the same money into a beefed up Jeep like the Rubicon Recon Xtreme. It's a tough decision all around.
@gondorian10063 жыл бұрын
@@SCORCH4x4 how is the 4xe Rubicon less capable than a pentastar v6 Rubicon? It still makes 375 hp and 470 tq after the charge runs out. You can't get that in any other stock jeep unless you spend beaucoup dollars on the Hemi.
@SCORCH4x43 жыл бұрын
@@gondorian1006 It's not that. It's that the 4Xe starts at about $8k more than a Rubicon. So for the same price we could get a Rubicon with the Xtreme Recon package. 30 miles into a ride, we either have a basic 4Xe with a dead battery or a fairly loaded V6. Plus the 4Xe's are kind of hard to get your hands on at the moment.
@gondorian10063 жыл бұрын
@@SCORCH4x4 yeah a 4xe Rubicon is $12k more, but there is a $7,500 federal tax credit, plus depending on your zip code up to a $9,500 credit from California, plus you can get carpool lane stickers.
