My company does a four day workweek every other week and it works great. Much less burnout and pretty much no noticeable difference on productivity. Plus if you *do* ever have a crunch time where you need to work extra, you have an entire meeting-free day where no one will disturb you!

@@jonnyeh not sure, it started as a temporary experiment during the pandemic but it worked well so they kept it. Just two months ago they decided to use the Fridays we do work as dedicated internal time, so we still don’t have client meetings and typically have time to work on internal initiatives or occasionally some sort of training. Maybe someday it will be a weekly thing! 🤞🏻

Yes it's called a compressed work schedule but remember you have to work an extra hour to get that one day off every other week.

I wouldn’t say Americans love to work, but that we have to work so much to afford to live. It’s so demoralizing being underpaid and overworked.

We need a 32 hour work week w/o a reduction in wage. Anything worked beyond that would simply be overtime and the employee will be paid accordingly

Definitely need a 4-Day workweek. I also believe that we should start asking questions like why are people getting burned out or should there be a lower max hours in a work day. On the flip side though I have worked with people who are really love their work and are willing to work everyday of the week. Perhaps there could be model with fewer hours with longer workweek.

I mean, we used to have 6 days a week as work weeks, so it's not only possible, but it's happened before...

I like that the 4-day model allows for three days to do something like a trip, whereas a longer workweek with shorter daily hours would require you to miss work for anything like that, even though it still reduces overall hours.

Since corporate policy is to work us to death with long weeks and long work days, I opted to shorten my working career to only 20 years by living modestly, saving my money (possessions kept to a minimum), and enjoying inexpensive leisure activities such as paddling, bicycling, sailing and backpacking. I've never regretted using my disposal income to buy experiences rather than stuff; life is too short!

The reason the government made these changes, and the reason that Ford instituted its shortened hours, is because labor unions fought for them. America is built on the back of unions.

I've been ready since my undergrad days. I tried a 3-day week, a 4-day week, and a 6-day week on different semesters of the same classload. I didn't realize how much time and energy it takes to get ready in the morning and travel back and forth. It would be an improvement even if I were to make my 40-hours 4 days instead of 5.

I have been journaling my own labor union/worker co-op agenda where doing simple math and consideration; suggests that an adequate employment roster, and shifts compensate for operating hours, and four day work weeks with even 30 hour work weeks where I envision three 8 hour workdays, and one six hour work day with shifts adequately organized as needed in said business. As I’ve stated previously, I haven’t started businesses like this, yet I have simply journaled these possibilities for future reference.

I wish factories could adopt this, but there's a few problems. Like if robots or something goes down, the actual time is required to produce the demanded goods and the culture of give everything to your company an expect them to not reciprocate.

Seems strange that people used to work 70 hours+ a week but now people are struggling with 40 and are asking for 32 hours. I will say though, with a lot of jobs being useless nowadays, a 4-day work week could work. Especially with machine learning improving.

It will kill the economy. Companies can't find employees as it is. Cutting productivity by 20% will wipe out small businesses. I know these "studies" show productivity is the same or better. That may be true in a relatively short trial, but over the long run, people will burn out working 4 days like they are burnt out on 5 day work weeks. People have become lazy pu$$ies. As this episode shows, these 4 day work weeks will not be able to be applied to sales jobs and service jobs. It will be just another class division. Blue vs white collar, at-home vs on-site, 4 day vs 5 day, union vs non-union.

Companies that pay well have no problem finding employees. Companies that pay minimum wage are the ones having issues. Do you see the problem? If a business cannot afford to pay its employees a fair wage, it shouldn't exist, no matter its size.
