It's a new market space for Ugreen, so I understand their desire to get feedback, as well as get the word out that they are now in the NAS space.

@@AwesomeOpenSource it looks cool alright.... and I am tempted especially if they confirm properly that you are allowed to install other OS's without voiding the warranty. Last time I checked it was a bit vague

For an off the shelf NAS, looks good on spec, build quality and importantly, price too. Still got to factor in the hard drives on top that price, which is no small amount, but UGreen has done a reasonable job on this initial effort. Would I buy one? I've a good setup with dirt cheap ex-enterprise gear, but if I was less of a Linux nerd and had deeper pockets, probably would.

Great insight. I agree, it's a nice entry into the market, and the drives aren't a negligible expense, but if there are people like me with a bunch of older drives lying around, then it could be worth it to start putting those to use.

Dang... that's a pretty slow transfer speeds and those files aren't even that big. I hope they improve on this before I get mine. They also need to give the option to enable editing the MTU for the 10GbE connection. The GUI looks good though but definitely needs a lot of polishing.
@AwesomeOpenSource

I agree, but so far the update seems to have addressed a lot of the initial issues. As for the transfer, that could be an effect of my network (though I don't think so), I did not setup a cache, so that could help, but not sure how to do it in their softwrae, and potentially increasing RAM, as well as using a different RAID type.

I would wipe the OS and install TruNas. Don’t want to wait the years for theirs to mature and the backdoors to be found. Glad to have competition in the space.

Things, I would have liked to have seen in the review. Installation of TrueNAS Scale, the only examples I have seen so far seem to be pretty convoluted with BIOS settings. Can the two SSD slots (which you skipped on the hardware overview) also be used as storage by TrueNAS for fast access with OS installation on the original OS drive. Details on the exact type of memory that is compatible if one wished to expand it to 64GB.

First, thanks for the advice on items to include in future videos. My goal was to show what the product can do "off the shelf", and it was already quite long. I may do a follow up where I show upgrading hardware, changing OS, etc, but wanted people to see how to use what you get out of the box.

RAID 5 with 4TB drives is a horrible idea! With 4 drives, RAID 10 would be the only safe bet (not to mention it'll have way better performance, if the controller can handle the bandwidth). If this device is really in use with a lot of data on the drives, the chances of the other 3 drives surviving a rebuild of 4TB of data is too big of a risk. Specially if the 4 drives installed were manufactured at the same time, during the same process. The one drive failed for a reason, chances are the other 3 are right behind.

Great points for sure. I think any RAID is better than none at all though.

Lets face it.. Synology is the leader when it comes to NAS's and the reason is because of regular updates & great apps... My advice to Ugreen is keep the regular updates flowing and don't be slack once your boxes are sold. Lets come back here in 2 years time and see the status of Ugreen NAS's.... Gee there's bugger all Apps...

Synology is ok. I'd say TrueNAS, Unraid, and QNap are also in the top running spots. But, yes, it would be nice to see Ugreen continue this OS and really build it out as time continues.

Looked at this, but since the kickstarter did not include the United kingdom, plus they have no track record in NAS market, and they originally said you could only use their OS, I went and bought an Asustor Lockstore 4 Gen 2 which is pure awesome.

One thing these smaller companies aren't doing well is improving their packaging. So much unnecessary plastic! I've picked up some refurb Dell equipment and noticed a lot more thought has been put into the environmental impacts.

Not something I really thought about. There was a bit of plastic in it for bags, but some felt more like a foam type material. The rest was all cardboard, so recycle-able at least.

That would be tricky, as I tend not to use hardware I dislike. I'm a massive believer in researching something before buying it. This is not a Homelab product, it is a Home Networking product. Maybe it meets your criterea because you got it for free, and it runs foss, but I doubt many serious Homlabbers are going to want this product when there are a lot of cheaper (and more interesting) options out there. Nice try by Ugreen though, they got you there.
@AwesomeOpenSource

This is in no way, shape, or form a home networking product. This has no netowrking control other than setting it's IP address a tall. You could probably install a networking system on it, like OPNSense or pfSense, but that would be a waste of a NAS. That said, I believe this is absolutely a great starter product for those wanting to get into homelabs. Sorry you disagree.
