Dr. Gueizo has a wonderful understanding of the past, but I don't think that he understands the way the politics of the country have divided the country in the past 20 years. I am 83, probably older than him, but I sense that he is in denial of what is going on between all strata of our society. We have reached a level of dehumanization of people we don't agree with that has divided families and destroyed friendships to an extent that I seriously doubt can be repaired. Yes, I am very concerned, and i am not alone.

Correct you are! This guy is missing what's happening outside his own area in Academia. Almost 60 here. Light Infantry veteran from a family that served Americans under arms since 1690. Our family is done serving, though. My son was the last to volunteer, God willing. My wife and I had to flee Michigan after her life was threatened for refusing to stop reporting staff for abuse and neglect as a nursing home manager long after it was clear the company, state, nobody gave a damn about elderly dying abused and neglected during the Covid lockdowns. Our five adult kids all make a good living. Four shun us. We don't see our grandsons (5 of them). Why? They were indoctrinated to HATE people like my wife and I who hold traditional Christian American values, question the government, and think critically. That's literally what happened. They went to university, and as soon as they no longer needed money from us, spit in our faces. They're incapable of reasoned arguments. They never even try to see the opposing points. It's all emotions, name-calling. Heat without any light. Their peers see no wrong in their behavior towards us. We're not drunks nor addicts and never struck our kids. As a prison minister, I literally know convicted rapists and murderers who have more visits with their kids and grandkids than we do. Frankly, it's demonic. I concurr. Not since the First Civil War have we been so divided. I remember the 70s. Hippy kids didn't disrespect their parents. Not like this. Today, if a nuke detonated here , half of America would automatically think the Permanent Federal Administrative Police State here did it, no matter any evidence. My opinion: Unless we see mass arrests and deportations; politicians arrested and charged with treason and other crimes... then it's going to get very very bloody. Where we live, we're among tens of thousands who've strategically relocated to deep red Missouri, PRECISELY because of the coming conflict. Thousands have sold everything and moved here. Millions of Americans are stocking up on ammo, food and other supplies in anticipation of the war coming. Sadly, I now understand how brothers can kill brothers, and fathers and sons can kill each other in a civil war. When a close one treats you with no dignity, it is exponentially worse than a stranger doing the same thing. A reckining is coming. Google: "Fourth Turning ". It's inevitable. May God have mercy on us.

Education is all about indoctrination now. I fully understand what you are talking about. I am mid fifties and work with a variety of people. Young, old, black and white, post secondary education and just high school. The young ones, especially the educated, have no capacity for civil argument. They are simply right and others are not just wrong, but virtually criminal in their views. Even the older educated types I've noticed, tend to take what the television and magazines tell them as gospel.

There are some knuckle draggers who are full of whiskey talk and bravado. And some of them are fool enough to think that there can be a "mass uprising". None of them have a real clue as to how large the US is, The chaos that goes back to Ruby Ridge, and the extremists who populate a portion of northern Idaho are a lot of talk. And they may welll be working to spread the extremist policies within other parts of the US. But them gathering up and starting a war? They don't have enough members to stop a response, one that will not be ture military, but rather a police action - as was Ruby Ridge. Since 1992, there have not been many of the far Right extremists; the Oklahoma bombing against a Federal building killed innocent people working there and those who still support the actors in either incident are a miniscule minority.

I feel for and agree with you. I am 21 and not gray bearded like you, i wanted to join the army when I was 17 but decided not to because I couldn't trust the leadership of it. Alot of good guys have left the army early. Alot of young guys like me are training outside the military for force on force type scenarios. A war for freedom? For whom? Lysander Spooner, a devout northern abolitionist was not pleased with the outcome of the war as he said, you have freed the slave and enslaved the free. Moreover, to suggest the war was about slavery is just hogwash. It was about tariffs (taxes). Lincoln merely made cyclical use of the slave issue issuing emancipation in the Confederacy, with explicit exceptions in certain areas of Confedrate territory such as Louisiana, with certain parishes under Federal control. Honestly, the myth about the civil war being primarily over slavery runs so deep it is revolting. Certainly, it was an issue and a blessing to see its hateful end, but as De Toqueville said he noticed more racism in the north than in the south as far as attitudes were concerned.

The Revolutionary War was about the right to self-determination. The slaves were not extended that right and the north begrudgingly had to enter into an unholy alliance in order to establish a credible nation that you could defeat the British Empire. The solution the north came up with to end slavery in the south was taxes on the slaves and tarrifs on slave goods. When the south lost their fight to keep equal representation in the Senate free vs slave states and Lincoln took over the White House, the writing was on the wall for the elimination of slavery in the south. The north was fighting a civil war to keep the union together. The south was fighting a revolutionary war for the right to self-determination for what they considered the superior species. If the civil war wasn't primarily about slavery, why all onerous taxes and tarrifs on slaves. Why the requirement for equal representation between slave and free states. Why did Lincoln free the slaves in the southern states. Why the 13th Amendment? The civil war took place because the north caved into the southern states demands to continue slavery in order to establish a stronger nation that could keep the European powers out of America.

The Bluestaters see a future Civil War as a repeat of the original Lincolns war. They think that they have the moral high ground when they don't. They think it is the North against the South when it isn't. It will be the rural center against the urban mega cities mostly on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The rural center commands the power grid, transportation networks, farms, power plants and half the countries population. The mega cities have none of these things but half the population crammed into urban centers with at most one weeks worth of food and fuel. The blue state politicians have spent the federal government into debt opened our national borders toman invasion of foreign invaders and allowing our enemies to organize together to seize control of the world. At a certain point the federal government becomes useless and ineffective and redstates would have to reorganize themselves into a new country.

As such the Federal services will grow weaker across a broad front and will give states a incentive toward independence. When this happens the Federal government might not be able to stop it. States leaving the union would probably leave as groups for both Commonwealth and protection.

These old academics seem out of touch, my generation is not only more aware and talkative in matters of politics, but we are scarily becoming more and more radicalized to either end of the political spectrum so much so that I’ve noticed not only online but in person in college that if someone finds out your of a different political leaning the manner in which they treat you is with hostility, even if they know nothing of you I see this becoming more common. There’s always to sides to a story. Here is the side of most of the southern people; one day the “army” showed up and started killing and burning everything in there path. People had no idea there was a war going on. So they banded together and fought back as best as they could until the confederate soldiers showed up and explained what was going on. By then there was blood spilled. They where in the middle of a war. This is the story told to me by my great grandfather in 1964. He was 108 years old. My grandfather filled in the blanks from the story’s he heard from other relatives that was in the war.they didn’t own slaves, most southern people didn’t own slaves.

Yeah except it was the South who attacked first beginning the civil war , not the North, so the southern perspective is not accurate. And whilst most people didn’t own slaves, slave labour benefited more than just slave owners . The businesses of cotton export , agriculture export, and many other industries that employed whites were dependent on the products brought in by black labour . Not to mention that having black people at the bottom of the social ladder, meant poor whites were seen as further above. This is why every southern state in its succession articles explicitly indicated that slavery was the reason for their succession.

His remarks about the federal government stealing the states rights to self government apply precisely to the mess in Washington D.C. today. The North profited greatly after the Civil War. The South was paying 75 percent of taxes but not receiving their share from those taxes. Our country is run by wealthy oligarchs who have taken all of our rights from us. Everyone should be up in arms that we had no choice and no vote in who the Democratic presidential candidate is. Now, they have stolen our voting rights. Within a short span of time, any person, regardless of color, needs to be prepared to defend themselves against a far worse slave state than existed in previous centuries. These slave owners have forced all of us into homes we don’t own, jobs we don’t control, and grocery prices that are causing many to suffer. Wake up to the issues Jefferson Davis prophesied would happen. I’m not excusing slavery by any means in the South. True. If slavery had been the "cause," it would have been in the operations order for the Union Army in 1861 when it first invaded Virginia. It wasn't. Lincoln didn't bring up slavery until 1863 when he thought he was losing re-election and used it as a political tool.

At the Kentucky state fair when I attended as a vendor, you drove in to the event in your vehicle giving your tickets. Vast contrast to going to the Delmar fair in San Diego. He looked at me and smiled, pointing down the aisle, “ I guarantee you that if someone pulls a weapon and tries to do harm in this aisle or this building, there are five people on this aisle right now who are carrying weapons with the open carry laws. And say a better aim the 99% of the criminals. Not only do I know it, they know it, and the criminals know it. It’s doubtful there will be any gun fire today at the Kentucky state fair”. In fact, the only injury I heard of in the building was at the animal petting zoo, which have been there for years, but it’s no longer there. The lady was taking a selfie next to the Burro, and the Burro bit her ear off. I didn’t read about a paper, and the petting zoo was history following year

If our Founding Fathers really believed in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution then Slavery should have been eradicated when our country was formed. So much for "equality for all and freedom" when millions were enslaved to keep rich white people both North and South wealthy and greedy! We went to War with Mexico in 1846-1848 at "gun point" to expand the institution of slavery to the Southwest! Lincoln did not want slavery to expand and he wanted to appease the South into staying in the Union and work on some compromise with the slave issue! He realized in 1862 that slavery was the main issue and issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Britain and France who were on the fence when it came to recognizing the Confederacy realized that Lincoln's use of Freedom for the slaves was a just cause! It didn't free the slaves in Union states that practiced it. Hypocrisy then and now! The fugitive slave laws used the point of the gun to retrieve runaway slaves! if it wasn't about slavery then why so much emphasis on keeping people enslaved? You don't preserve a country by keeping anyone enslaved except those criminals found guilty of crimes! The southern states didn't just wake up one morning and decide to secede this was discussed in the the state houses and state senates. Bills of secession were drafted and voted on. Google them and read them. They state clearly the reasons they feel they needed to secede. Count how many times the word slavery is mentioned. Lincoln campaigned only on the policy of not expanding slavery into new areas, but the newspapers in the south portrayed him as a fervent abolitionist that was going to end slavery tomorrow. Lincoln won the electoral college not the popular vote and wasn't even on the ballot in all the southern states.

I'm not going to defend the Confederacy, but there's an important point being missed in this discussion. The Confederate rank and file were fighting for states rights. A very small percentage of southerners actually owned slaves and that was the wealthy class. The average confederate soldier didn't want a domineering government interfering in their affairs. Surely it was the wealthy slave owners and traders who depended on the slave economy that were more focused on the slavery aspect of the war.

The civil war was not the first time that people tried to secede from the United States. Look up the Whiskey Rebellion. People who thought taxes were unfair tried to deny that the federal government had authority over them and that they had the right to leave. The same men in congress that signed the constitution sent the army to tell them that they couldn't, and George Washington himself rode at the head of that army. Several times people using the Declaration of Independence as the basis of their right to leave the union, and no one has ever been allowed to.

The red pockets and blue pockets were around in 1860s. Each county voted to go to war or not. This county I'm in voted to not go to war. This was a general vote for all. Plus, is you boil that war down to the common denominator was not actual slavery, but the almighty dollar. There were tariffs that caused the south to pay more of the bill for the government than the north did, from exports, (cotton and other ag proucts) this was a different way of life compared to the rapid industrialization of the north. The southern exports ensured the south had allies on other shores, if not the war would have lasted months instead of years.

I think in the months since this interview was shared, we have seen two assassination attempts of a presidential candidate. Not to speak of the underlying cause in each case, which are hard enough to interpret without a concern for broader political violence, however we are already experiencing more turbulence than, say, the 1876 presidential election. I don't believe we will have a Civil War, but I do think we're in an age where political violence, perhaps in the form of unofficial militia groups or lonewolf dissidents, begin to take action. This, on top of the storming of the Capitol on Jan 6th 2020, shows that there are numbers of people willing to go to extremes to advance their political interests. I'm very concerned, I just happen to believe the next Civil War is not large armies on either side of the Potomac. I think instead of war, it is weaponization of the parties that will see us either driven towards autocracy, or results in spasms of political violence not seen since the Civil War. We're generally too old and fat to fight a full-blown war, though as a nation we are certainly well-armed for one.

The American civil war was at its heart about freedom. It was about the freedom of states to leave a union that o longer represented their economic interests. The Emancipation Proclamation was issed a couple of years into the war with the hope thatit would destabilize the South It did NOT FREE THE SLAVES IN THE UNION states at that time. The academicians are simply justifying the popularized position of the winning side. Monuments in the South... What is not even discussed is that nothing really changed in the zsouth until after 1965. and the enactment of the zfederal Civil Rights Act. The reason was that prior to the Civil War the South was solidly Democratic. That did not change after the Civil War.. The South remained solidly democratic and created aberrations such as Jim Crow and the KKK. THe freed sla es became sharecroppers and corporate farming employees under economic bondage and conditions no better and frequently worse than when they were valued slaves. And all under the Democratic party enabled by the pardon given the 7000 or so large plantation owners which restored their land holdings and foreclosed the promise of 40 acres and a mule to the freed slaves. In fact a pilot project of this nature run by Sherman the military governor of the 🎉Carolinas was ordered by Washington to evict the freed slaves from their farms which he did and return the land to its former owners. Small wonder that the zdemocrats want to rewrite and revise history. After the passage of the federal civil rights act the zsouth flipped from being zdemocrat to pretty much Republican which remains the case today. Ive lived in Texas Colorado Massachusetts California Nevada Louisiana and Nebraska. The people on the two coasts are culturally educationally and politically similar. The people in the South are quite distinct in their values culture and economic status from the coastal strips. There is some similsrity now between the Midwest and the South in political cultural and economic tendencies. Probably much of the similarity lies in the Midwest and South remaining highly agrarian . The South NEVER recovered fully from the Civil War. Levels of industry generally never approached that of the coastal strips and the midwest. That remains true today with the exception of Texas which oddly enough is currently in a state of open confrontation with the federal government. It is quite true that a population of civilians armed with handguns and AR15s cannot overthrow the federal government and its military. However that same population CAN render the federal governments rule quite difficult. Thru mass acts of civil disobedience passive resistance sabotage and dissension. Texas border actions supported by multiple other states is an illustration of this. The possible imminent truckers embargo of New York City is another example. Sure the New York zNational Guard. Can be mobilised and use its transportation assets to ddliver food to New York City. How cost effective would that be?

I'm no scholar, only an observer. My observation about civil war is not that it CREATES deep divisions in a society but is a RESULT of deep divisions within it. If there was a way to reconcile the 2 sides of a deeply divisive issue, short of war, I think that the people would MUCH prefer to go that route. Our Declaration of Independence states that people tend to suffer abuse for a time before deciding to fight back because of the serious nature of war. Of course there are always hotheads who want to fight right away because they aren't thinking things through but cooler heads prevail --- up to a point. It was this way with the Revolutionary War. It seems that while the cooler heads are seeking diplomatic means of resolving a matter, as the tensions continue to rise, the pot finally boils over in some area and sets in motion the chain of events that starts an all-out war. When that war is over it then sets in stone the view of the winning side. In the case of the American civil war, slavery was abolished in the US and the slaves were freed. That is MY simple viewpoint.

I’ve read the Confederate Constitution. Other than clarifying ambiguous language around slavery, in addition to reforming the Executive branch and Supreme Court. It’s a copy of the U.S. Constitution. I like the single six year term of the executive.

In a past life I was an old Southern farmer in 1861 telling all the young men who were going to war "turn around and go back to farming the north is going to win don't waste your time. The north wants to unite all the money.. just go back to farming.

Texan here with Southern roots. My view was that it was a Northern urban industrial response to the success and growth of the agricultural South. The internal combustion engine would have soon ended slavery, but the head count and bank accounts of the South couldn't be allowed to stand. It was that century's blue states vs red. My ancestors passed a vibe that we would have all made it together - north and south - had the federal government not invaded especially Virginia awakening people like an anti-slave Robert E Lee.

If there was no Civil War, I think slavery would have lingered on in the South until the late 1800s, around the same time it was abolished in Brazil.

Dred Scott made northerners feel as if slavery could keep expanding right into the north, and there was nothing that their state governments could do to protect their independent farms and local industry. The specter of slavery coming in and putting everyone out of business after Dred Scott was a genuine concern. John Brown's raid made southerners feel as if the north was OK with murdering all of them in their beds at night. When you get right down to it, back then north and south were just itching for an excuse to kill each other.
