Love the in-depth overview of the Venture X here Spencer! Capital One definitely has really strict application rules that prevents a lot of people further in their CC Journey's from getting the Card, and the incremental devaluation like you touched on with Hertz President's Circle Status being removed as an example, definitely can be worrisome for what they are going to do next. Totally makes sense that you want to keep it long-term, as it's such an easy Card to get positive value from. As a side-note, even though Lucia got denied for the Card recently, I recently did the Venture X pre-approval tool and was approved (probably since I have low personal credit inquiries with only getting Business Cards last year), so I think it might just be the next Card I get, to lock it in before it's too late. Great video Spencer!

I think you can justify the card just for the Visa Infinite Benefits since it's basically effective annual fee neutral. Throw in the lounge access and "Catch All" category and its a nice card even if you set up doesn't feature it. But the value grows exponentially when you add the savor one. Great Video - and i feel like the purchase eraser feature is almost as good as cash back on a small scale.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
That's a good way to look at it too! I didn't mention those Visa Infinite benefits, but if you don't have another card with those then getting this one for that is gonna be your cheapest option most likely. Good point about the point eraser tool too. That's a good way to get a good cashback rate for your travel purchases at least.
@sebxlopez6 ай бұрын
I got the Venture X last year and then got the Savor One last month. The ability to get 3x back on restaurants, groceries, and entertainment with the Savor One, and then convert those cashback dollars into miles on the Venture X card is a MASSIVE play that I've been enjoying recently. And booking everything in cash on the Venture X within the travel portal to get 5x or 10x points, and then using the purchase eraser tool to back-cover the expenses is a great tip. The purchase eraser tool also works for uber and lyft travel payments, which is pretty cool. Loved this deep dive analysis on the Venture X, hopefully they don't keep messing around with the benefits too much by removing value instead of maintaining/adding to it.

Great review of the card. I think even as just a stand alone card, even if it may lose value year after year, it's still always coming out with a very positive effective annual fee. I got the Savor one a month ago and looking to add VX to my setup and just allow me to use Savor 1 points as miles and should see plenty of value there.

Being based out of DFW has been clutch because that lounge is SWEET. The 2x catch all aspect has been great as well. And honestly just even 1 trip through the portal makes it worth it (travel credit + anniversary miles).

As long as we get the 300 travel credit and 10k points every anniversary for paying $395 a year, this cards a keeper for me. All others nerfs probably won’t make me cancel the card I am still in my first year and have so far taken 2 international trips and I love having this card as my zero Freon transaction fee, catch all card over sees and while at home! The priority pass access is just the cherry on top 🔥🔥😌
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
That's awesome to hear you're getting so much value from it! The one thing I'll mention about the $300 travel credit is that if you wouldn't pay for a $300 trip in cash then it shouldn't count in lowering your effective annual fee, but as long as you take that into account you're golden!
@fuge5119 ай бұрын
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Thank you for pointing this out! I never thought about this until now lol. I think I can reasonably expect to pay $300 in travel at least once a year. Or if I see that my only points redemptions(are “low” )for a flight is around 1.1-1.3 cpp I might elect to save points and book with cash. This line of thinking might be flawed idk 😂

Great video Spencer, I thought about the VX as a premium option since the AF to credits seem like a good option compared to the Sapphire Cards or Plat card but I also think that now that they got a bunch of sign ups and have to pay out these credits for all of the new card holders that the benefits of the card will eventually get worst, Do you think it’s worth even looking into C1 as a lender since the point currency isn’t as good as AMEX and Chase and they like to approve more people in the sub prime category
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
Thank you Dalton! I'd say the VX is still a solid option right now and since it has a no annual fee downgrade path that helps a lot. Capital One's miles are actually possibly as value as other lender's currencies as long as you use them with international airline partners, so if that's you, C1 is definitely worth looking into. But on the other hand if you only use your points for something like Hyatt, then their cards make a lot less more sense imo.

I just skimmed this video but having this card for a few years I see some good advice here. Be aware with the travel credit you want to check the price through the airline or hotel website first because sometimes cap 1 drastically inflates the price. This isn't always the case but something to look out for. Yes transfer partners are limited but i've managed to make it work for international travel where I consolidate my miles with specific airlines. Is it ideal? No but I manage to come out ahead. The lounge access is nice for the AF. Great advice about watching out for nerfs but for now it makes sense to me especially since I'm likely to ditch my amex plat next year.

Nerfing is possible, though I do think they have improved the portal a lot. I do have a Freedom Flex and Custom Cash cash-back card, so my foot is in the door with Chase and Citi should I change my mind. Just adding a Sapphire Preferred and a Strata Premier would get those rolling even if I didn't want to do a full trifecta.

Thanks for the info. Good to have a prospective for the future of this card as well. I am not sure if I agree with your numbers at 13:50. On the fence with this card in my first year, but will likely keep for year 2 unless they up the fee. Pro: 1) easy to redeem points for travel. 2) easy to recoup the annual fee 3) 2% cb adds up fairly quickly and is good for a lot of purchases where I would get 1% on other cards CONs: 1) Portal is not useful for flights in my experience and is OK for hotels. Often not worth the cost or hassle of trying to price match 2) Most of the extra benefits are completely useless for me like the cell phone coverage. (Pay $40/ mo more if I use a CC with Verizon), no lounges in my nearest city etc.

My search was for full retail First Class ticket not some basic economy ticket. I had to book my flight through the airline. I was able to apply miles to pay for the charge. However I was not able to use the annual travel credit or get the 5x miles. Since I have had the card they nerfed the priority pass, the travel credit and will soon do away with the hertz status. I think transferring points directly to domestic airlines for domestic economy travel is a poor use of points. If your domestic travel have no recurring pattern then it is always a challenge to obtain transfer or award value. It's easy to find award on Avianca for travel to and from United hubs.

My first 3 car rentals through C1 portal - they smoked Costco Travel and Hertz was a great deal. In booking this summer, the rental rates have risen and their pre-paid rentals are more than Costco's pay at pick up rentals. Especially if you travel to Asia. So I think it depends on the person but in all honesty why on earth would you be racking up miles to travel domestically anyways

Do you plan on making a video about the eight dollar fee rule with credit cards that just got finalized…….
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
Not a full video most likely, but it's an interesting topic! I honestly don't think it's a good thing for the cc community though. Late fees are something none of us should worry about since we'll always pay our cards off on time and in full, but these companies losing out on the profits of those fees means they'll be passed down to us in other ways I'm afraid.

If my local airports had PP or C1 lounges 😢 this would be a great card. Restricting the travel credit to the portal really stinks, no earning elite status with that. Maybe C1 could work to make it an approved agent so you did? I fear Chase and Amex will copy that credit restriction in their inevitable nerfs, possibly in lieu of fee increases.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
That would be awesome to have a C1 lounge in your home airport. That makes the card a lot more valuable. I do hate that they restrict you to the portal also. Hopefully the other lenders don't follow suit!!
@scottstempmail90458 ай бұрын
Is/are there compelling reasons to choose this card over the AMEX Platinum? This seems like a low budget hack.
@winduncan98188 ай бұрын
300 dollar credit + 10,000 ($100) renewal points, it's basically easy free airport lounges after the first year which will cost you $95. Where AMEX coupon book style card is hard to get $650 of value if you don't use the services. So you can get lounge access for yourself, guests traveling with you + add a family member who can do the same for basically free after year one.

I can’t get approved for it - I really don’t know why…😢 everything is superior in terms of requisites.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately if everything looks too good they won't approve you. That DEFINITELY doesn't mean to make your requisites look worse haha, but unfortunately it seems C1 is super sensitive to recent inquiries and number of card accounts. So the more cards you have, the harder to get approved sadly. You can always keep trying that preapproval tool every few months and hold off on other card apps though!

@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
From what I've read, yes you can! It may not make a ton of sense to have both considering benefits can overlap, but it seems to be possible!
@Milkinporsche9 ай бұрын
Never really want the venture x because its rewards are too portal heavy. Plus, they are not gonna like me😂.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
Them being portal heavy is definitely annoying at times. However, one small trip a year through the portal doesn't bother me personally, so that's why I'm still happy to keep it open. Them being card account sensitive is definitely annoying though, so I feel you on that. There are plenty of other great cards out there too though!

Just do the marry go round match with car rental companies. Easy to keep status.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
Definitely important to do that before they remove Hertz PC status. However, when it's time to renew status with the ones you've matched with, you wouldn't be able to anymore which is annoying. I'm not super familiar with how all that works yet, but I'll have to make videos about it as I learn more!
@tooeasy42179 ай бұрын
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial you just have to time it. Don't just do 1 company do all of em lol. That way you can do it to the ones you DO want.
@harshitgupta77408 ай бұрын
Yeah! I think they're going to bring it down to Amex Platinum level once they gain enough customers and then it may not be worth it anymore for those non-elite members and they might end up canceling or downgrading their cards.
@Ng-cq4wq9 ай бұрын
If the credit that cover the memberships fees are removed I see no point of keeping this card open

I’m torn I really like the earning multipliers on venture x and savor one. I also like the chase travel partners as I plan to book a couple domestic trips in the next few years. But man I’m about to say f it and go with Amex plat and gold 😂
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial9 ай бұрын
I can definitely see where you're coming from. Personally I'd go with whichever one fits your travel habits best. For example, Chase's multipliers aren't the best, but their partners are basically perfect for me so if I only had to choose one lender I'd go with them. But that may not be the case for you and another makes more sense. Also gotta consider the effective annual fees of each card and that can really steer you in the right direction.

I'm not sure I fully follow, but it's definitely a great card for the right person right now! I wouldn't say it's good for 99% of people, but if it's in line with your goals it can be really powerful.
@scottshapiro27959 ай бұрын
I think you can get value out of this card if you don't value hotel partners, or domestic flights. If you value those, you're probably better off with Chase or Amex. Right now, I get lots of value out of this card (wife and I are actually going to Hawaii with points this week Turkish->United). IAD is our home airport, so we can use the Capital One lounge. My wife also travels for work, so it's convenient I can get her lounge access. BUT, as you say, I've been watching with worry about the constant devaluation of the card. I think it's only been out 2-3 years and we've seen a lot of devaluation. While taken separately, they aren't the end of the world, but it's a death by a thousand cuts. I expect the authorized users to go away in a year or two unfortunately.
@VincentPascual9 ай бұрын
If they take away free authorized users, then I’d consider downgrading my Venture X to a VentureOne.

You summed up my thoughts on this card really well here! You're definitely in an ideal spot right now where you're able to get a ton of value from this card and hopefully they don't continue to nerf it, but that seems to be the direction they're going. Time will tell though!
