Do you feel as though the world has reached the point of no return? That 2025 is going to be yet another parade of horrors? I can't say I blame you. Since 2016 it's felt like every year is worse than the last, and it's getting exhausting. There's conflict around the world, climate change isn't going away anytime soon, people keep voting against their best interests, and to top it all off, Trump just got re-elected, and now he has cronies like Elon Musk by his side. We stand to lose so much, but it feels like we can't do a thing about it anymore.
How CAN things possibly get better? What can we even do in a world where we feel increasingly powerless?
Well, you can give up.
Or you can do something...

I'm GenX. We used to talk about how everything will be so much better when my grandparents' generation died off. They brought us Nixon and Reagan. They brought us trickle-down and called us the slacker generation before we were re-named. Now I see people my age flying Trump flags and complaining about how immigrants are making houses unaffordable. Things won't get better when the boomers are gone, or when my generation or the next are gone. Because we all seem to adopt those generations' mindsets as we age. The only way to be truly rid of them is by not becoming them.

Millennial here. I'm currently really broken-hearted that my brother had adopted the rhetoric that Trudeau validated on his way out: that the liberal party let in too many immigrants, and that's why housing is so bad right now. And he really doesn't recognize that it's a fascist talking point. Heck, we ourselves are immigrants! He doesn't think that he's blaming the immigrants themselves, just the policies that allowed them in. But he just doesn't get that it's not in the least because of immigrants, that it's just another product of capitalism and corporate greed, of eroding social services and legal protections for the powerless. Let alone even questioning what right the Canadian government even has to be dictating who can enter and who can't, on this stolen indigenous land. It breaks my heart so much because we grew up together. Because he really is a good person. Because I love him so dearly, and he means so much to me. And yet, somewhere along the way, I feel like I've lost him. And that's how it seems to happen, doesn't it?

@@emdeo The good old days were better in many ways. Income equality was better, housing was more affordable, things were built to last instead of built to break, college was cheaper, healthcare was more affordable. Really, the exploitation of capitalism still had a couple decades left before the wheels started to fall off. However, if you weren’t a white man, things were worse. Women couldn’t open a bank account by themselves until the 70s. You could murder black people in the public square in certain towns and get away with it in the 60s.

I work in retail(walmart). I feel like my life won't amount to much. But i try to be a good employee. Not for the sake of the business, but to make customers smile. Even if a lot of them aren't in the best of moods. I have this one customer who keeps trying to tip me. But that's against the rules. So I finally gave him a hug and told him to pay it forward. Thanks Salari. Its been hard to see but i do feel like maybe i can have some impact on the world however small it is. OH that reminds me of just yesterday a guy was looking for refil packs for a snowcone maker. He was hunting for it because his kids wanted it since there is currently snow on the ground. Some other employees told him to go off and look in one direction(but i knew we had something better). I found the guy and took him over to the toy dept since i we have the snoopy snowcone maker refil packs. The look on his face was exactly why i enjoy my job. It was like a kid on Christmas. Knowing that he'd be the super hero of his family that day. Once again, thanks for reminding me of that.

@DebWrites I don't regret my comment either. A lot of young folks in particular are increasingly starting to idolize the past era (sociology prof here)... and whenever asked, it usually comes down to what you mentioned- plus the addition of more obtainable cultural ties such as relationships/religion... and the general sentiment of unity that comes from a common threat (fear of communism/blacks). These usually all come in tandem with each other. I only bring this up because while normally I would think we should be able to separate those clear bad parts of the system while talking about it- a clear tactic of the government is to keep the mass uneducated and ignorant to the struggles of others... And to antagonize those speaking about the clear harms of colorblindness (or other "other" issues). The problem of DEI and many woke initiatives is that it is also discriminatory in many sense against whites and men (a valid issue) - and I've seen how it actually causes more harm and resistance/resentment to talking about these issues. The right knows this and tells this same promise to young men with the clear implication of channeling the anger of the unheard- and to no surprise to me at least, this garners a pipeline of those who feel excuded from the left into actual racist or misogynistic ideology. All I'm saying is while I hate how generically woke I sounded in this, the phrase sets a bad precedent through an unspoken promise of a prosperity at the expense of a clear scapegoat, something anyone who says it knows human nature will gravitate towards. As he said in the video, Trump encompasses everything America is... the willingness to shoot at someone else's feet to make them dance for your entertainment - or to step on the backs of others for their own gain... Apologies for the long explanation😮‍💨.

Thank you for the validation. Earlier tonight I saw a young homeless man on the tram with a quivering lip and thousand-yard stare. Usually I bring granola bars and small bills with me so I can offer what help I can afford (I also make a habit of asking homeless people begging in front of grocery stores if there's anything small I can get them while I'm shopping), but the reason I was on the tram in the first place was because I'd forgotten my wallet and was returning home empty-handed. I decided all I could do was try to cheer him up in what little ways I can, so I invited him to sit next to me (he was too out of it to realize the seat was empty), made sure he had a plan for where to sleep tonight, tipped him off to a dangerous sidewalk near his destination he'd best avoid, offered meaningless small talk and a hug, and otherwise just tried to make him feel like a person. I mostly avoided looking homeless back when I was homeless, so I don't have as much firsthand experience with the "everyone just looks past you" effect, but I've seen how it leaves people feeling even more isolated than they already are. A part of me was trying to convince myself that since no money or goods exchanged hands, I had not actually done a good deed, and was just trying to justify to myself having not done a good deed. You specifically encouraging me to do exactly this kind of thing has successfully banished that doubt, raising the likelihood I'll do it again in a similar situation. So thank you.

Because knowing would mean taking action that would alienate their friends, cost them their community, cost them time or money, or just mean giving up some comfort. That's how humans work: They don't just weigh up evidence regarding if a claim is true, they also take into account the consequences of deciding to accept the claim. I have always being the optmistic type of person, but recently, mostly because of climate change, i've being tired about thinking over the world's future, leaders and capitalist elites are only concerned about their own weight, the worst part of capitalism is the capital for the capital, without realizing a pile of cash is worth nothing in a world where there is nowhere to spend or being praise by it. I think this era is the first challege we have as a specie and civilization, and somewhat i feel that the we are endogenously to fail, as society and specie, so many "good" organizations that are banked to sabotage real causes, so many misinformation that is taken by fact, and the truth becomes a subjection, the worst part is, we are in a radicalized time, one hating another, one resentful and other to take advantage of that, to create another radicalized person, we all in a need of a saviour, but the "saviours" only conduct like one when they have interest in doing so or wanting something in return, that is their belief in manipulated truth. And this is one of the points that should be on the checklist of how to make the world a better place. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that seeking solitude and preferring your own company are wrong things to do. It's just that seeing more and more people painfully uncomfortable interacting with other humans and preferring to be forgotten is worrying. We are social animals after all. This becomes particularly important because such discomfort comes from the fatalistic principle that we're an irremediable plague and this only validates ideas of misanthropy. And even though there are many people out there capable of doing evil, willing to invalidate that there are also many people capable of doing good and legitimately want you around for company is something sad and counterproductive...

I don't know about anyone else, but I HAVE given up. Without going into sobstory detail, I've never (yes, never) been genuinely happy in this world, and have sat watching struggle after struggle. Now I have a chronic illness for which there is no cure, and the system in place will wring every last dollar from me because it's able. And now we have to deal with another term from Cheeto Musolini, whose entire campaign premise was "keep me out of jail, oh and F those people over there." People voted for him, despite his pathos being transparently on display. Nobody seems to WANT to help eachother when the cards are down. The U. S. is on fire, and the rest of the world is smoldering as it heats up. Screw it all. The only thing left is The Big Nap.

Very easy to join and if you have an irregular schedule like myself it is perfect. CASA is another great organization. Speaking as millennial older than my country of origin's democratic age (South Africa), I've learned that community is everything. Yes, you as an individual cant change systemic issues, but as community you absolutely can. Beyond that, a community can empower + enable you to survive some of the systemic challenges at hand. Food drives, clothing + blanket initiatives, mutual aid and even advocacy. A practical start is getting to know the people around you - neighbours, colleagues, fellow students. If you can, slightly inconvenience yourself. Cook a little more dinner and offer some. Cat/house sit when they're on holiday. Small things that reinforce that there is "we", not just "me". I'd literally not be here, were it not for the thousands of communities that supported my family members, who were political activists in exile. We are all we have, and when cultivated it is world-changing at most and life-saving at least.

Just one idea from my own life. Younger managers, make sure you know HR policies in-and-out. Advocate for you workers and become a shield for management overreach. So many senior managers out there are just abusing their supposed authority just to get their power fix. It sucks to be put in the crossfire, but it feels much better then being puppet and abusing your team members on behalf of another person. Again, this is within the guidelines of policy. Join a union and understand what actions are protected and what the union will fight on your behalf for.

Do you have any idea how lucky you are to be living in the US? Back here in the United Kingdom it's become a dystopian surveillance state and people can barely afford to eat or keep their lights on. @@oculttheexegaming2509 That’s something I’ve realized. As the generation that is “coming of adulthood” begins having children and taking on more responsibilities, they tend to shrug off the responsibility of improving society onto the childless and younger generations. I see this repeated cycle of behavior as a significant contributing factor to why beneficial social change seems nonexistent or extremely slow at best. By the time many people reach the life stage during which they have more time and resources to contribute to social change, they do not want to do it or they are physically restricted from doing so, although some of the restriction comes from lifestyle, but that is a whole other issue.

Excellent video that really hits on what we're all feeling, and absolutely comes to the conclusion we've been banging on about for years - you can make change happen by making even one person's day better. That said, the rhetoric of "things will get better when ___ generation dies off" isn't just naive, it's dangerous! The reason things are like this is because of the systems we have in place, and those systems aren't dying off - frankly, they're getting more powerful! The solution is to fight the current systems, not juat hope the right people die off - because that's also complacency, and so many more vulnerable people will die in the meantime.

In the US, if a homeless person is not on EBT food stamps and/or EBT cash, there is one of three things going on. They're either recently homeless and their application hasn't processed, they're a felon convicted of selling their EBT benefits or otherwise abusing the system (IE collecting from multiple states at the same time), or they are unwilling to do what they need to get them. Every homeless shelter, every homeless outreach program, every food bank, they will all tell you the various resources there are, including food. If you're handing a homeless person that doesn't look like they're recently on the street any amount of money, it isn't going to food. It isn't going to shelter. It is going to drugs and alcohol. You giving a homeless guy the occasional $20 is not you helping them with some small gesture. You are worsening their condition by enabling what is keeping them from getting the help they need. You're humble bragging about how you're a good person doing this, but you absolutely are not. You want to feel good about yourself? Go put in time at a shelter. Put in time at a food bank. Put in time at an outreach program. Giving an addict a $20 is not showing compassion. YOU are directly harming them. You may as well just hand them heroin or crack or a bottle of cheap vodka. When it comes down to it, you are a bad person; paving the road to *their* hell with your half-assed good intentions.

These days, it’s not just boomers or older ppl who are the problem though. Younger generations of millennials & gen Z (particularly men) have become increasingly conservative & backwards.. I think it’s because of red pill manosphere influencers who have recently become prominent. There is a huge problem with the gender divide; while young women are becoming more liberal, men are going in the opposite direction. I’ve experienced it firsthand with my older brother who enjoys podcasters such as Joe Rogan & has in recent years started spewing red pill manosphere rhetoric. I think he used to be more liberal, but now we’re on opposite ends of the spectrum and don’t get along anymore as a result. It’s extremely concerning to me. I think there needs to be better influences for young men. One of the criticisms I’ve heard is that the left failed to appeal to young men, leading them to the right.

I partially disagree. While we can all appreciate the sentiment of mutual aid, it does not lead to meaningful change when the powers that be (capital) is organized at much larger scales. You briefly mention supporting striking workers, but I think you could probably highlight the importance of organization in your own workplace, starting/joining a union if you can, and building actual labor power. Without organization, trying to personally be a better person is just a nice gesture. We don't all have to cosplay as annoying political pundits on twitter, but it is also not useful to pretend that we can all just wait this out, especially when many of us are facing imminent doom.

One thing that we can take away from these last ~10 years is that people are reactionary and forgetful. The boomers dying off won't change much, when the vast majority of people across demographics simply adopt the state approved take from whatever media is put in front of them. For instance, look at how the Democrats adopting the Republican framing on immigration has shaped approval for DACA. It's pretty clear that without appropriate messaging, things will only get worse. Determining if a pundit is good or bad is not a question of if they are mainstream. It is a question of whether or not they simply grift towards reactionary narratives, or present reasoned, material analysis.

Mutual aid can and does historically change things. We all have a choice do the thing we can do that can making things better in theory because it has by president in tge past. Or fret over what we can't do an cannot change things absolutely because it's beyond out personal scale Unless your courting death, which is always tragic, the first is more rational tgen tge second even if the first chance of returns on a large scale is very very small.

No disrespect? Actually, full disrespect. Not for all boomers. Many have suffered under these policies, been disempowered, exploited and had any chance of wealth accumulation stolen from them. Full disrespect for the people who have used these policies and politics to do so. Comellete and utter disrespect for the people who decided it was easier to listen to platitudes and steal the future from their peers and their children and their grandchildren. I have been saying for the last 20 years that the only way things get better is the boomers - as a generatiom - finally kicking the bucket. In my country they got free education, a guaranteed pension and the moment they hit a certain number they are given concession after concession off of the backs of those younger than them who they have ensured will never be able to have the quality of life they have. And they have the audacity to be upset when people are angry and disenchanted? They soent the last 20 years demonising millenials. Now - because they won't bloody well retire - theyve shifted it over to gen z's but their heads are so far up their asses they keep calling them millenials. They benefitted from a robust social contract and then put it through the shredder for everyone who came after them.
