I taught my 5 month old puppy to not pull using the following technique. Every time she pulled I said her name to get her attention at the same time as slightly jingling he lead (making a sound on the clip not pulling the lead!), I then gave her a treat. She very quickly learnt to not pull as soon as she heard the jingle. As soon as she reacted to the jingle I faded to lure by only sometimes giving her a treat, but giving her praise everytime. It took 3 or 4 walks for her to learn loose lead walking perfectly, once I'd come up with this idea that is. I now don't give her treats because the pulling has stopped. I hope this helps someone.

Thank you so much. I realized right away I’m expecting too much of my 7 month old lab while trying to walk him out of doors. He is better without distractions but my method definitely needs to be tweaked and mastered BEFORE exposing him to the wild while expecting him to focus. It’s very interesting how the difference in breed makeup actually makes a huge difference too. My corgi mix is actually very attuned to me as an inherent characteristic and therefore makes an obvious effort to please in contrast to being distracted by smells and potential food, meaning wildlife scat.

So glad you posted this video. I was feeling so bad that I had resorted to using a gentle leader on my 10 month Border Terrier. Her pulling got really bad after I allowed my husband to walk her & I have a bad back. Our training is going well but with Lockdown we are limited where we can currently walk. Sometimes she is so distracted that walking & turning is not a great option . Honestly we would do it so often I was getting dizzy. I'm the garden at home or at a training field , which is now closed , she is very good. Get out in the village & as soon as someone approaches , she's pulling & silly. The gentle leader changed that & now I knows if I keep up her training , we will get there. I think as she matures , she will settle more. Not having interaction with others is hard for the dogs as well. Thanks once again.

I agree... raising a pup in isolation has not helped my boy become accustomed to strange people and he now goes bonkers when he sees them. It’s bad enough we live in an isolated area to begin with so he’s seen practically no one other than myself since he’s been 8 weeks old. It’s too bad I didn’t see this coming or I would have at least taken him in the car around public places more often. Good luck with training your pup!

Our dog is being kept in the kitchen, puppy proofed zone and continues pulling no matter what we do. I have had this puppy with a harness all this time. She's going on 12 weeks now and I couldn't be more certain of this decision; I took off the harness and I'm going to start collar training her tomorrow. She pulls like no tomorrow. I hate to ask but I've got a few questions for you folks at Mccan dogs because I'm unsure if I've made a crucial mistake already with my 7 week old border Dodge. I've only had my pup for 4 day's but he's recently started to have return problems when out for potty break's, he used to come sit directly on my feet when he was done outside and now he would rather stay a few feet away and make me come get him. he also will pull hard on the leash when he's trying to go check something out cry and growl at me, is this normal or have I caused a bad experience at some point to cause this? I have messed up on name recognition tho, he's unsure of his name at times, but I've taught him sit, lay down and kennel flawlessly already, he's a very smart little collie I just want to make sure I'm on the right track. I loved this video! Instructor Carol is so clear and fun to watch! I will change the harness for a collar and hopefully, with these trainning instructions and everyday practice, my 9mo berner will stop dragging me around while I try to take him to the park. She's about 17weeks old and only about 5lbs. I lost my last incredible rescue who was a yorkie/maltese mix just last week due to tracheal collapse that was exacerbated by an enlarged heart and some type of infection. We never have used even a plain collar on any of our dogs because of our concern of a tracheal collapse as they've all been small breeds and terrier mixes. My dog who just passed away I rescued when she was about 7 years old so I'm not sure what her life was like prior to our wonderful 6 years we had together but she was the best behaved dog I've ever had but I wonder if her previous owner used a collar of some kind on her for extended periods of time. Anyhoo, I would greatly appreciate your input on what I should be using for my puppy as I'm not giving her clear communication to loose leash walking by using her harness (although we are doing good in the backyard but I know I'm confusing her) I'm terrified to risk even using a collar. Any advice on particular products would be greatly appreciated!

In the uk harnesses are becoming 'trendy' but as a lifelong dog owner I say to people - what do Huskies wear to make it easy to pull heavy loads? - A harness! Teaching with a collar needs patience - but works!

Sherlock is almost 9 months old. Some days, he does great on our walks. Other days, he's pulling all over the place.He's also a very high-energy/drive dog. We walk at least an hour every day or he's bouncing off the walls. We also do games and training, but they just don't tire him out enough. He's a smooth collie (Lassie type not border collie), and he's definitely more of a working dog than just a pet. I'd love to do some agility or something like that to give him mental stimulation but he get super excited when he sees people or other dogs and he's hard to keep under control and making good choices.

I watch both. I feel as if there are useful points made by both and the very slightly different approach to training will enable me to work out a plan which works best for me and my dog. They say there's more than one way to skin a cat, and I agree. I think it's a good idea to get lots of different input on a situation so you challenge preconceived ideas. Otherwise I'd still be watching the dog whisperer and taking his word as gospel (gods forbid!) I do agree there are too many ads in his videos, but hey you have to make your KZbin money and it's good he's getting sponsored so he can make more content. It is slightly off-putting how he does it though.

I love your videos. Not only are they informative they are also motivational. The dog I'm working with now is my Service Dog in training. I made a huge mistake with my retired dog and while avoiding the same mistake I'm concerned I may be making a different mistake on the same task. I want my dog to be able to pull so that when I'm going uphill or up stairs I have a little help. 100% agree with the harness! I’ve done focus training with my puppy to have her on my left and looking at me. When I’m doing the second exercise does it matter if she sits? I imagine it doesn’t and I want her to do well without getting confused.

In Quebec Canada, the harness is mandatory for dogs over 40 lbs. The front chest harness is a live saving with this law to not have a dog pulling you during a walk.

Not sure about this. Collars do a lot of damage to the throat, and many many dogs take quite a long time to stop pulling (breed specific... ). Add in a strong prey drive and boom, off they go on a lead and really hard jerk on that collar. There are harnesses that are Y harness designed that do not restrict the movement of the shoulders (we NEVER use a no pull or front clip harness). If you train the same way on a harness designed to not restrict shoulder movement, why would that not be acceptable? Pressure on the throat is still pressure. Also, it's very hard to hike a dog that is always in your path because they are expecting a treat. We do this technique on a slip collar and boy are they responsive if a good treat is available, but they harass. The head collars are a viable option, but for a very very strong muscular dog over excited, they have ways to still pull, and even at times back out of or break them.

Having the collar super high on the neck behind the ears prevents the damage on a dog's throat since it is on more muscle than any where else. That paired with quick pops of the leash works too. Also y harnesses still put pressure on the chest and can injure or bruise their ribs. Something like a martingale or really bad cases prong is even better than a regular flat collar. The martingale can also keep the dog from slipping out of their collars but correctly fitted won't choke the dog, the prong is a different type of pressure (very tiny prongs don't pinch because there's too many spaced too far apart and keeps the collar from being too small,) that can work with any type of dog at various degrees, you can put a bandana between the collar and the dog if the dog is too sensitive. Don't be too hesitant to tools or methods because many dogs are taken to shelters because of big problems that can be helped with those. It's better for the dog to be a bit uncomfortable for a few seconds than to risk a problem getting worse and dogs getting sent to a shelter.

Thank you for the video! We were making so much progress and then adolescence came and made it all so much harder!! We will give these new techniques a go! Also, are there any videos available to teach leash manners? As in how to teach a puppy to greet other dogs on leash? We’ve tried creating space, following another dog at a distance or refocusing her attention on something else but she still gets so excited when she sees another dog that all she does is bark constantly and tries to drag us towards the dog to say hi - its like she can’t even process anything other than saying hello to that other dog but she doesn’t do this off lead! She sometimes stops when we start walking the opposite way and she realises that we aren’t going to say hi but I never know when to reward her as I don’t want to be rewarding the overexcited behaviour!

Practice walking with the dog against a wall and you in between and dogs and your dog. You should always be in front of the dog and in their line of sight. You can also try starting with your dog stationary instead of walking and see if they can sit and follow commands in public. Keep increasing the distance from people and dogs and noise until your dog can do this. Then begin to do it in more public areas until your dog can look at a dog calmly when sitting and then look at you when you speak to it

I would train one at a time, I would use a harness that has a handle on the top, then if the dog pulls I would do my "Stand solid and still and smile at the dog." I would hold onto the central handle using either a very short lead or a handle of the type they have on guide dogs. So if the dog pulls, I simply stop and smile at the dog. The dog soon gets the message that soom as it pulls the walk comes to a halt. Also I would progressively increase the length that I would stand still, starting with just a couple seconds, then progressing to several minutes if necessary. No treats or rewards, just plain strong leadership. I would have a 2 leash arrangement, a long one where the dog can wonder about freely and the red one for close leash work, where it's absolutely necessary. The dogs in the clip are not that large and the lady looks athletic enough to easily hold the dogs back by going astride the one dog and simply lean back

I used a front attachment harness on my rescued adult St Bernard (before discovering McCann!). He quickly discovered that lunging after that cat surprising us from behind a fence resulted in being turned around facing me, not the cat. From there, I would not go forward when he pulled. We were walking with a loose lease within a few days.

A lot of people ask me why I don’t put my leash on my service dogs vest. I look at them kind of weirdly. People don’t understand that when a dog feels the pressure of the vest on their chest they pull. With that they also do not get the leash feed back that they need. I use her collar whether it’s her halti, flat or slip. She doesn’t pull at all. She knows that she can’t or shouldn’t. Training on a collar is more effective I have seen or experienced

I switched to a shorter leash, 6' vs 10. And since he wants to play tug of war, I drop the leash when he grabs it and starts tugging. If I catch him quick and say "drop it," he might. Lol Otherwise, I wait for him to calm, ask for a sit and "leave it" while I gather it. Then off we go. Sometimes he thinks twice before doing it again, sometimes we go through the whole thing again. Sigh. If we can work this out, and stop the wanting to jump on the grandgirls when they come, we'll be good! 😊

Take my advise with a grain of salt- I'm inexperienced. But my guess would be to stop, make the leash boring by holding it really still and the moment he lets go, say "yes!" and give a treat. I think each time the leash is grabbed, the walk must immediately stop. Hopefully that will work. I bet there are videos out there. If not that exact thing, a combo between not pulling the leash and teaching "leave it" might help. Good luck!

My lab pup was the same way. He saw the leash as a big game, until I taught him the “leave it” game with treats. Not with the leash grabbing in mind, but that did help with using the Leave It command whenever he resorted to mouthing the leash. He sees the leave it command as a good thing with getting rewarded and therefore dropped the leash without a fuss. He’s now 7 months old and has forgotten about mouthing or playing with the leash.

No toys, find a balence trainer, do it with a slipleash, a quick 'pop' of the leash and praise, praise, praise. Lots of stroking and good girl/boy. No need for harness, gentle leader, food, toys.

Hi Minos. Instructor Carol here. You can use any reward. Doesn't need to be food. Whatever your dog likes. Each dog is different. Dogs that are not overly distracted, already have a great relationship with her handler or just love to work maybe fine which is praise. Especially if our timing is good!! And our execution is done well. You can use Praise, toys, play, the chance for some freedom, etc. With Cheerio chances are my voice would've been enough. With Freya it likely wouldn't have been. Partially because she's not my dog and we don't have that relationship with her. And she has very little foundation. If I'm using a toy I will have it hidden (just like the food wasn't in my hand). Otherwise the dogs Will likely learn to pay attention only on the toy is in sight. With a toy the most efficient way is to offer it as a tug. This is also hugely advantageous because the reward involves me and us interacting. If a dog doesn't like to tug I can still offer it as a reward it's just going to slow down my training session a bit. Hope this helps.

Can I start this leash work with a young puppy?

any suggestions on what to train when? I'm trying to train my older puppy how to stop pulling on the leash, how to not jump on people outside, how to give us a sign she needs to use the bathroom instead of just going to the pee pad. do i work on one at a time or can i work on everything at the same time? PLEASE HELP I'm Desperate!

I have a Dalmatian and she can back out of a collar so I switched to a harness. But now I am concerned. With such a small head and neck, what would be best, she pulls a lot

I have a 3 year old French Bulldog wich i just adopted. He was on a harness all his live and sadly he is pulling like crazy. He has no manners. Should i switch to a collar and start teaching him?

I wish there was a detailed video about stopping leash pulling with a harness ): My city has leash laws that force any pet dog that weighs 40lbs and more need to be on a harness.
