I walk two labs, they are awesome as long as I have treats in my hand, the moment I don’t, they pull. I’m guessing I need to work them both separately for this exercise. We go on “sniffy” walks and “walk walks”.

If he's protecting only you then you need to show him that everyone in the family is part of the pack. When he barks and growls and shows protection mannerisms, you need to push him away, outside the circle so to speak. Let him know that you dont want him around when he acts like this. He will be confused....keep it up till he gets the idea that he needs to include family members in his pack. When he acts nicely reward him. Dogs are pack animals and your dog believes that you, and you only are his pack, he thinks he is the one who is in control. You need to reverse this attitude and make him see that everyone in the house is pack members and he's just one of them. You need to show calm assertive behaviour and put him in his place, and he is to follow and not lead. Ceaser Millan has a few good videos explaining this.

Hi. I watch your training and it seems great. My first problem with trying this! My dog doesn't care about treats if he is on a leash. I can't get him to stop any behavior on a leash, treats just don't matter at that point.

My puppy has been doing great with the beginning of our walks. But as soon as we head home, she begins pulling. Even at the park, she is so smart - she pulls when we near the car. 😅 and when cars pass she will sit and wait, which seems better than lounging at the car but makes the walk experience a struggle.

@Sam-qt5ff
@Sam-qt5ff 5 ай бұрын
A halter like a harness? Ones that go around their body encourage pulling. They were originally made for sled dogs to pull the sleds comfortably. Need to use a flat collar. Dogs will keep pulling on harnesses. No dog trainer worth their salt recommends harnesses or halters. If you mean a halti, still not a great choice in my opinion. The pops could hurt the dogs neck from twisting.

I see a human that holds the leash so short and tight so the dog has no choice but to pull. Also, allowing the dog to go forward and following behind on a tight leash, teaching the dog that a tight leash is the desired thing. Begin at the beginning, before attempting to walk anywhere. Teach the dog where you want him to be. Pay him well for being there. Show him how to get back to that spot. I think people expect to be able to walk their dog all over, with distractions and triggers without working on foundations first. It is so important to teach what we want. You can’t correct if the dog doesn’t understand the behaviors we want.

Whenever we go outside my 8 month male english setter old puppy seem to be interested in smells more than anything and loses interest in food. Any recommendations?
@meerespelikan
@meerespelikan 5 ай бұрын
Maybe better food or a toy? A lot of time is about engagement. Setters are great dogs for sniffing games/training. If we are boring (according to the dog), they find interesting things somewhere else. Depending on what your ideal walk looks like, you need more/different communication with your dog. Trained dogs don’t have to focus on us all the time (because they’re still aware enough for when you can recall them) but at 8 months old, it’s still all about building a relationship, so that they basically need to "store" you as more important than anything else.

My problem is my dog is a ball obsessed Border collie crossbreed who isn't pulling because he is distracted by something in sight but by any place anywhere where we ever played with the ball. He knows each place within half an hour walk in whatever direction we walk. So, lets say I start walking North..he knows a place he played in the north and that is what he is pulling towards, even if it is say a 20 minutes walk away.I don't understand how to use a "leave it" on that?
@UnknownPr0digy
@UnknownPr0digy 5 ай бұрын
If your dog is trying to go another direction, walk that way, make sure there is a little slack in it and right before leash extends bust a u turn and keep walking do not look back or let him pull, it teaches him/her to focus on you cause they see "hey this guy is going the other direction, I gotta pay attention to them." (If you are worried about hurting their neck, don't be, use common sense behind it) and if you use a harness even better cause no stressing about hurting puppys neck
@Sam-qt5ff
@Sam-qt5ff 5 ай бұрын
@@UnknownPr0digydon’t use a harness. They’re designed to encourage pulling. They’re not for training.

Get a prong collar. They work great when used properly and it doesn’t hurt them. Sounds like he just pulls on walks in general. If you drove a half hour and hopped out of the car and randomly walked around I’d bet he’d still pull. And if he isn’t maybe it’s because he’s sniffing. Once the sniffs are old sniffs it’s not as exciting and they don’t stop as much or as slow.

I use a harness and long leash (20 or 50 ft depending on where we are) for a sniffy walk. I use a regular 6ft leash and a martingale collar for my working or structured walks. I'm hoping the different hardware clues my pup in, but it's hard to know for sure.
