Hi! We’re adopting a 4 month old rescue this weekend and I was wondering what type of treats do you use for training sessions like these? Most “training treats” I see usually recommend max 10 pieces/day... I know it’s also recommended to use some of their kibble before meals but what is best to use the rest of the time? ☺️ Thank you so much for your videos!
@chriscode64314 жыл бұрын
@@designerdreams02 hi, popping in with an answer. The max is mentioned so your puppy doesn't get fat. As long as weight is good, it's good. Using his food is definitely a good idea. Otherwise, try for as minimally processed treat as possible. You could even use dehydrated chicken.
@aubreylytle36963 жыл бұрын
This video is very helpful, but the one issue I had was that Kayl said that eventually you can say, “yes!” And you don’t have to reward. Now there are ways to wean your dog off of having to use food every time they do something right. But if you just stop using food when you say, “yes” then that lessens the value of it and they may eventually stop caring/paying attention to that word.

@chloefrancois19844 жыл бұрын
@@ishanrocky9841 i honestly have mixed feelings about Zak George... I feel like he lacks some dog language reading skill as well as not being able to predict or prevent undesirable behaviours properly enough. It appears to me, from his videos, that he’s still quite a clumsy trainer himself too. (I personally also find it quite annoying when a significant portion of a video is just (payed) advertisement.) He does things with great intentions though! I believe in the end he’s definitely a good person just trying to figure out what could help a certain dog and then keeps trying and trying until he gets the training results he was looking for (e.g. what I saw of him with his puppy) He just lacks the ability to predict and prevent behaviours, therefore taking way longer and sometimes unnecessarily confusing the dog in the process. Just my personal opinion though, I started off learning from early Cesar Millan, I’ve come a long way too haha I believe that wherever you try to get inspiration, you shouldn’t completely rule out someone’s advice because of one thing they said, but on the other hand always remain curious yet critical. Approach your sources with a healthy sense of curiosity for what you might learn from them, but always keep in mind that, even if they really don’t mean to or realise this themselves, they might be wrong and/or there might be better ways to tackle a certain problem.

Ugh yesss. I went to a dog obedience class just for the socialization. I didn’t need it for teaching her basic obedience. The trainers rewarded everything multiple treats for the smallest thing. And it caused a lot of problems and they got upset when you didn’t reward your dog. I refused a lot of the time because she didn’t do anything that she deserved a treat. It caused a lot of problems. I now and having to work her out of that mind set that she doesn’t need a treat. She can do it without a treat. It’s a long process but it is worth it. Don’t reach for the treat and then ask the dog to something. Ask the dog to do it then get the treat. That is a big thing I have had to learn out of since going to that class. I am also trying to get out of the habit of repeating myself and now expecting it on the first time. Only asking once and having her do it is important. I can do it with sit but struggling with lay down. She is stubborn with laying without a lure of a treat.

I'm a new puppy owner, and I'm glad I found this channel. This video is so useful in that it visually shows the repetitions and results, displays various ways of incorrect trainer behavior, different corrections, and most importantly, the exact steps with timing to have success as a trainer. This video was 18 minutes long, but I felt that the entire time I was learning. Not only are you great dog trainers, you are effective trainer trainers as well! One question I do have is, can you use a clicker in conjunction with the conditioning word (yes!), and if so, when would you click it?
@perrymitchell71204 жыл бұрын
You want to use either the clicker or marker word. They are both the communicating that the puppy has done something right, just using different methods to communicate it. If you use both methods at the same time it will be confusing for the puppy. Kind of like two people talking at the same time.

One thing I saw Victoria (from It's me or the dog) do was cover the windows so overexcited dogs don't have too much stimulation in the car, then over time remove the coverings. Disclaimer: I'm not a professional trainer, this is just my personal idea One thing you might do is expose your pup to the car little by little. Get them near it and reward calm, get them in and reward calm, sit in the driver's seat, wait, get out and reward the calm, etc. Finally, take short drives starting and ending at home to desensitize to driving.
@Anabel_Weiss_Comedy4 жыл бұрын
@@cre-k8-ive thanks :) yes we exposed her gradually the last 2 weeks and she is definitely calmer now. We only drove a couple of meters but that’s a big improvement. She stopped pulling before we got into the car and she is lying down quietly (with treats but better than not at all) in the back 🎉

I’m happy to know that I’m doing this correct I started with a lure the first few times plus verbal then moved to hand signals with a treat in hand now I go back and forth between treat in hand and in pouch. She looks at me the whole time not the pouch. She KNOWS there are treats in it but I mix it up on her three tier value treats tier 1 kibble tier 2 cookie/ biscuit thing tier 3 meat thingy that’s high reward. I’ve had her 4 days and she’s picking things up insanely fast. 11 weeks old and she has a great grasp on sit. Down is also good when she isn’t in puppy mode so training sessions are 2-5 minutes or shorter depending on the time of day but we have multiple sessions. She has learned release for her toys and trade she has a phenomenal grasp on this one. Freeze is being worked on just introduced and come/ here is still being improved upon. I’ve had her 4 days 🤣 freeze doesn’t have a hand signal nor do release/ trade those are verbal. I have time to figure something out as she is going to be a working dog so a solid foundation are basics are a must without overlap on hand signals

Thank you so much for all the details and for explaining so well. I have a 5-month-old Morkie and sometimes I get frustrated with him. He gets aggressive and start barking. Please give me some advice.

She makes an attempt. It’s not necessarily wrong, but she makes the effort. With more difficult or complicated commands, sometimes I reward for effort, especially for dogs with fear or lower self esteem. You can always work on making the form more exact later.

I’m only like 5 minutes in and your video is so educational! I’ve done a lot of research before getting my puppy but no one has really spoken about this topic of training. Working on this training right now with my pup
