I believe that even though that 4.0L 1GR-FE will feel like a dog compared to the LX 600's fancy twin-turbo V6, it will ultimately last much longer. Normally aspirated>forced induction when it comes to durability.
@WheelsRCool2 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but modern forced induction engines are built from the start to handle the addition of the turbo.

Hi David. When are you going to test the build / manufacturing quality between a 4 runner limited vs a Lexus GX premium. That would be great 👍
@oscargarcia54982 жыл бұрын
The paint thickness difference is because of the tri-coated paint on the White Pearl Lexus. Blizzard Pearl, Wind Chill Pearl, Ruby Flare Pearl, and Moon Dust for Toyota are the ones that are "thicker" which are denoted as "special color" charges on spec sheets. 1G3 or Magnetic Gray Metallic isn't one of the special colors.

My lunar rock is on average 157 when averaging all panels. I know this because I have OCD and we were hit and the body shop matched the microns very well. The orange peel on the other hand is a big oof on almost all 4 runners. It doesn't bother me that much but with machines painting and dipping these cars you would think it would be pretty damn smooth.

That white has at least 3 layers so I am not surprised it is thicker. One of the reasons pearl white usually has an up charge

He kept saying $65k for the 4Runner and I had to keep reminding myself that this was the inflated price. I got my ORP in 2020 at MSRP 42k. Those days are long gone. Had a 2017 RX350 for 3 years and when I bought it I immediately noticed how heavy the doors were, felt way heavier than my wife's 2016 Pilot. Is the paint thickness something that is consistent across all Lexus products? How about for Toyota? Have you been able to compare the quality of a 4Runner vs a Toyota built in the US?

Thats my only complaint with the 4Runner the paint could be a bit thicker.. I can change out cheesy loudspeakers but paint is a different issue. I will be ceramic coating for some protection..and wax over that. I am pleased with the alignment though mine looks very straight too. It's an ORP not a Limited. Nice video and insight as always !

Good high level comparison David. Having owned 4Runner LTD and recently traded it in for the LX600 Premium I agree with both your points re paint and panel gaps. I think LX is a relative deal - in Canada I paid 107K for it which has all the same off-road features as the 4Runner TRD pro which is almost 70K. 35-40K difference is well justified - LX is superior on the hwy, matches the off-road capability and has slightly better mpg compared to the 4Runner. There is also the exclusivity factor.
@WheelsRCool2 жыл бұрын
The LX 600 is the Lexus variant of the Land Cruiser, which is a different vehicle than the 4Runner, so that is also why the price is higher.

Interesting comparison. There have been continuous debates over quality between Japan vs NA vehicles of the same models. (i.e. Rav4, RX, ES, and Corolla). It would be interesting for you to have a series of videos showing the the likenesses & difference of the same models with different manufacturing locations. Thank you.

I have had a 2019 Camry SE and now have a 2022 TRD. I can tell you that both have gap issues all over. Not only panels but lights and weather stripping. The interior noise in my 2019 was unbearable and part of the reason I traded it in. The part the rattled was the left grey plastic left of steering wheel. Nothing I did fixed it other than lunching it 😜. That didn't make it better just made me feel better. The 2022 TRD also has vibration in the dash right up by the windshield. A piece of paper wedged under fixed that. I have a friend who is stationed in Japan and that car is much better made than mine. My hood on driver's side I can fit my pinky and the other side is good. Not to mention the hood is also higher towards the windshield.

I don't believe the paint thickness is a measure of the paints quality applied by the different production plants. It is a measure of the color and the stages that color needs. For example: Toyota Super White 040 is a single stage paint, Magnetic Gray 1G3 is a two stage paint and Blizzard Pearl White 070 is a three stage paint. Single-stage method: the acrylic base color and hardening/gloss components are combined into a single mixture that does not require a clear coat; the process requires two to three coatings of the single-stage paint mixture. Two-stage method: this requires two to three coats of base color plus another two to three coats of clear coat paint. Three-stage method: two to three coats each of (1) base color standard paint, (2) a translucent "medium" paint that carries the suspended pearlescent pigments, and (3) clear coat paint The Blizzard Pearl color requires the three-stage method as the translucent paint coatings help create a more distinct "pearl-like" appearance. The three-stage method is more expensive due to the additional materials, labor, and processing time. I would bet that a Blizzard Pearl White 4Runner Limited would have the same paint thickness as the Blizzard Pearl White LX600 that you have in this video.
@mikewright28582 жыл бұрын
I read that the Super White is formulated this way to keep the white pure - the refraction caused by clear-coat layers tends to somewhat alter the brilliant white's appearance.

4Runner is high quality, it is just that the interior materials are extremely cheap hard plastics. It needs stronger primer and paints on the frame too. A Toyota Venza for 5 years ago has a beautiful interior for a similar price as a 4Runner.

@@flight2k5 That same engine in the new Tundra is already breaking down before even reaching 300 miles in some cases. So his prediction is not far off.
