I remember when that came out, that car was sick. I like how it was lower than the regular GT and the ground effects/splitter was a little slimmer and I love the rear wing. The only complaint I remember some people complaining that the seats were a little bit too hard but you could always buy different seats It’s nice to see a car that old so well-kept, 3000 pounds for a Mustang is real light.

You know I remember the Saleen Mustang, because I mentioned it earlier. The Mustang GT was nice, but overdone body panels made the 5.0L LX look more serious, functional, and with less cost. The Saleen took that and made it perfect. I always liked those Ronal R9 style wheels. You could always color key the spokes to match your tide, if you wanted to, and have the polished rim. The whale tail rear deck spoiler made the whole package look serious, but functional, and no nonsense, without being gaudy. The seats and Momo steering wheel made the interior perfect for that time, just like my 84 Buick GN had the nicest interior, even better than the GNX. I would have to day this Saleen Mustang was the best iteration of a facotory/tuner car from a reputable well known hot rod stable. Simple, basic old school performance, and a great condition example here in the video. Can you imagine if all these cars we liked were available in mint condition for a reasonable price today?

In this configuration ....hatch black / gray silver stripes , 5 stars were certainly pretty . Here' the real deal . LX chassis gets shipped to them . Floor planned . Saleen conversion and shipping paid up front . Built by mexicans in a warehouse . Came in with the Racecraft suspension falling out , FloFit seats made of cardboard , Fake "modified" Hurst shifter that was like a soup spoon in a bowl of oatmeal , POS stereo with no reception , factory cassette was miles away , most ground effects falling off while on the truck and needed repainting . This guy is smoking . Sold many Cobras , SSC's etc . We would do Paxtons , Vortec's ,shifters and gears in house BTW .

Everything all original (except the top and tires) only my car came with all of the paperwork (temporary tag, bill of sell, warranty cards, small Saleen decals, the brochure of 89’ the one of four jackets that came with every purchase of a Saleen) Only what separates mine from others is the one I have is a factory decal delete car. If you get all of the fox Saleen convertibles together, (from 87-93) mine is one of one (as stated by and with Saleen documentation) Love that car, it’s a total different beast when driving versus my 89’ white with blue asc McLaren Mustang #51 with a 351 EFI

engine looks stock but sounds like it's got mufflers or a performance h-pipe? you're right on the mark emphasizing the Saleen 'racecraft' suspension and the most Famous wing in Mustang history. great example and review!

Thank you so much for your compliments! This Saleen is a real gem! You are correct about the h-pipe. In showroom stock rules you can't modify really much of anything under the hood but you can modify the exhaust to a certain point!

The generation of Mustang which prob drew me to the Ford Mustang was the SVT Cobra R of the early 2000s. But the iconic car imo was the the Ford Cosworth Escort with the iconic whale tail and that strong 2L Inline 4 built by Cosworth which is around the same era of the late 1980s to 1990s. It will be amazing if you can find a Escort in the US. Only a handful was imported to the US.

Yes, agree ... owned an `88 for 18 years until I just got tired of looking at it in my garage. It had 9331 miles on when I sold it and was $25999 new. Great cars, but they were overrated as far as straight line performance since they carried the same 5.0L engine as the rest of the GT/LX Mustang line, yet also the weight of the extra body cladding and suspension components. On the track, they were much better, but still a compromise. The "Racecraft" suspension was not exactly like having Koni's, but they served the purpose for what Steve needed to market the car after. What helped the most perhaps was the disc brake setup from the already defunct SVO Mustang.

The Saleens are very nice but to say their the greatest foxbody ever made, No..... Every Foxbody is the greatest made. A saleen is just one just like the other but with a different type of wing, ground effects, white face guages, road coarse type suspension and depending on what year the Intake, MAF etc etc was a little different. These are available bolt ons that can be added to any hatchback. Some think their Coupes are the best that was made and others believe their McLaren 2seaters were and Hell lets not forget about the SAAC or even the Cobra R. My opinion every single Fox that came off the assembly line was the GREATEST made 👍👍👍 But, Saleens are nice though and I always loved the Saleen Wings on a hatchback with a Cowl Hood and some Weld Draglite big-n-littles, it's just a look that always appealed to me......

Also the only place to get a Saleen was Bill Currie Ford back then you only have three major Ford dealerships in the Tampa Bay area Bill Currie Ford John Nottingham Ford and Ernie haire Ford you had to go to Bill Currie to buy the saline and they had it on a rack that was stainless steel with lights underneath and it looked like for stainless steel tube that it's at on and it showed the suspension it was badass actually the 85 and 86 is are more rare than the 8 on the 87 88 89 Etc in 89 they changed their sailing Wing to a two-piece looking Wing which I really didn't like but that car handled like it was on Rails at also came with disc brakes and it was 5 lug back then Forge Infinite Wisdom stop for lunch was fine enough for all the torque that that motor had it made over 300 foot pounds an 225 horse and I had no way to be a sin so good luck if it's rain it would always go sideways I made a lot of money street racing the fox body platform

What would be an awesome segment is the sleepers of the 80s and 90s AKA 87 Dodge Omni glhs Shelby Edition charger glhs Sprint RT intercooled Turbo 5 speed 87 Grand National 87 GNX SLP formula the 305 tuned Port stick shift no radio no AC aluminum driveshaft 342 posi traction 88 an 89 Iroc Z 305 6-speed manual no air no radio driveshaft positraction rear end 89 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo Cyclone typhoon let's not forget the s h o Taurus with a standard six-speed transmission until 91 when the automatic was an option and the automatic put out 10 more horsepower to make up for the difference of a manual transmission Ford Thunderbird SC 5 speed manual Mustang SVO shame 2.3 they use the EcoBoost now if you knew how to tune one back then they were deadly fast not many people did

I like the way you are thinking! The only issue would be to track these cars down. The ones you have mentioned I have not seen in ages but I will keep looking!

4/27/91 - Purchased a 1989” Mustang Gt ….. by September it looked like a Saleen with 427hp 🍷 not exactly like this 5.0 he’s reviewing butt Similar 🔜 Should have a Black Label Saleen Parked in my Garage 🏆

I love Saleen anything but I hate fox body 80’s mustangs styling is so bad just my personal opinion love the explorer xp8 Saleen and Saleen 94-2009 mustangs great styling great sounds just me though don’t forget the Saleen windstar they made a few of.

Thank you so much for sharing that extra info and input! I totally remember all the models you listed! It is a shame what has happened to Saleen.
