I have lots of tumi bags and they last long time. Its more geared towards executive/business professionals. I though wish they have a slimmer or minimalistic version. But I do swear that they are durable and they never failed me on my trips.

Even though this backpack was designed to be used as a business brief, I took it to Austria and used it as my travel pack and it fit everywhere. Hell tons of stuff and wasn’t horribly uncomfortable. The front organization was perfect for easy access on a train or a plane.

I started off with an Aer Tech Pack v1 but ended with Tumi after all these years. I've been a long time Tumi fan and I love the Alpha Bravo lineup, their other collection, along with their Harrison. Most of the pack hacker demographic is not what Tumi is targeting for. I love my Nathan Leather, Lark Leather, Aviano Slime Brief Leather, and the newer Logistics backpack which I got in Canvas from Japan. They're durable and feature rich with pockets. Never had any issues in the rain. They're comfortable enough and they're stylish when you look for leather or unique colorways / fabrics. My use case is simply commuting on the subway, bus, and planes to home, office, and to the coffee shop. I have other bags for other scenarios, like my Mission Workshop Radians, Axis, Rhake, and Spar.

I do really believe it is all about what you need from a backpack. In other words, what is your user case. This backpack is a very solid business tool, perfect companion to a business traveller: appropriate to meet a customer while wearing suit and tie as well as when going out for a casual dinner. It plays in another league, or better it is a completely different sport, compared to the brands mentioned by many commenters (like Aer or else). I own a previous version of this backpack. I use it daily as my go-to bag for the office, either if I commute by bike or by bus & train. It is also my hand luggage when I fly, together with a Tumi International Office trolley. They both flew some +300K miles across the globe over the last few years (would have been more without pandemic) and they both are still in perfect shape, with signs of usage of course (mostly on the leather accents), but no damages and full functionality. Given the service, were they worth the steep price? Sure yes, by all means! The backpack does normally carry a laptop, an iPad Pro 11”, a couple of iPhones, chargers and cables, a tech-pouch for adapters and storage, ID/passports, badge, cards etc. plus a water bottle & snacks. When traveling is also fits a sweater, a jacket or a PeakDesign packing cube with a change of clothes. Could it be better? Absolutely. I wish it had some compression straps to keep it smaller when partially empty. I also wish it had pockets distributed along the height of the dividers to better distribute vertically the bulk of small accessories and stuff. It would be great to add some simple, basic, security features to the zippers (just like PD or Wandrd do). Finally, I would really love if one of the side pockets would give access to the very bottom of the main compartment to let me fit and access a small camera cube! That would really make it the best possible bag ever (at least for my use case).

You were completely right about the suit and tie. When I am traveling, I cannot look like I am about to go on a hike or a camping trip. I meet people in finance and my backpack needs to look like business.

Yes it is well worth every dollar I spent on it. I’ve had mine since 2010 and paid $450 back then. My only issue I’ve had was when I got a 17” laptop, it barely fit inside. The luggage handle slots work well with the Tumi rolling luggage handles.

Great review! I actually have this bag, got it from work so I'm not complaining. I guess I would've been more critical if I spent my own money for it. What I love of this bag is that it fits underneath the seat in front of me on a airplane so no worrying about boarding. I get on last and just take my seat. Best way to travel. What high end bag would you rather recommend that is of similar size?

I bought this bag close to 10 years now and it still looks new. I recently used it for travel and it was comfortable, so I dont have the same issues in terms of the strap. The only gripe I have is that it always tilts forward because if you put a lot of stuff in the front portion of the bag it becomes front heavy. Other than that it's an amazing bag which I bought close to $50 off in NYC.

Great review. I have many Tumi products. I’ve been buying them for years and they last years. I have this Alpha 3 backpack and I use it on business trips. However just this February I used it to take it into the Yosemite mountains, California. I packed it heavy with a ton of survival gear and it held up. I think the strap issue you mentioned might be your body type as I do not encounter that issue. (However on some backpack I have) It went through stormy periods up there in the mountains with snow and it still looks brand new after dragging it about. The amount of handy outer pockets make this backpack a stand out. It is highly versatile. If you do use it for meetings and general everyday carry, just don’t over pack and it remains streamlined. I have to say this backpack and my Tumi McLaren paddock backpack have to be worth every penny, costly yes, but add up your use of it and it works out great. 🫶

I have the briefpack and it’s a great office carry bag. I love the fact it always holds its shape. So I can easily plop it on the ground and open it up near my desk and can leave the bag open while working without it being floppy on the ground or on the desk. Yea it’s expensive for sure but every time I get a new bag I always kinda keep using the TUMI for my electronics and documents. Love the review btw

Yup. I was working at a job that requires travel every 1-2 weeks. Tumi is great for this. You have ur laptop safe in a different compartement and there is large enough space to pack a 2-3 day clothes using a packing cube. Longer stays? Just use the hotels laundry service (ur company’s paying for it anw) It is bulky and heavy on the weight but it is a workhorse. Had mine for 5 years and still looks great.

I bought the older version of this bag in 2017 at a Tumi outlet for $220 on sale for Memorial Day, marked down from $650. I have used it every day and week since for over 5 years now and the bag still looks brand new. I travel a lot. I am on a plane at least every other week and I got tired of buying a new $100+ bag every 2-3 months because of a broken grab handle or popped zipper. I am hard on my bags and equipment. I buy them to use so I use them. It's crazy how this bag still looks like it did the day I bought it. The material on mine is slightly different, with a heavier canvas-feeling material with a grey and black herring-bone pattern, but overall the design is very similar, but mine has more organization possibilities and larger compartments. My version also seemed to be better quality and has a larger laptop compartment with a separate zipped compartment for more than one laptop and has lots of padding in the laptop compartments. Of course, I bought mine back when Tumi still had their lifetime "fix it no matter what" warranty and they seemed to produce better quality products back then. I wouldn't pay $600 for a backpack, but I would definitely buy another Tumi product at a Tumi Outlet store. Like I mentioned earlier, The quality was better back then, based on the new Tumi stuff I've seen in stores. I would definitely caution potential new buyers on that. Tumi has (had) a great reputation 5 years ago, but I don't know about the quality today.

I bought the previous model or style back in 2007 and paid under 400 when it was on sale. It is still in excellent condition. I don’t use it as much now because it’s a heavy bag when empty. I use it time to time in the winter season or when the weather is cooler. In warmer weathers the bag can make you sweat because it can be heavy when it’s filled.

I’ve had mine for 4 years, the material is best, I’ve traveled to many countries with it and it’s awesome. I love that it stands up when I set it down. I usually carry 2 laptops, a work laptop and a personal laptop. Fits well. I also love that I can put my 20oz Hydroflask water bottle on either side of the bag. The organizational pockets on the front is awesome. I use the top pocket a lot when I need to access something really quick like a thumb drive or quick pen or pencil. I can set it anywhere to work as if I had my own personal desk with me with easy access to everything I need to reach for when it sets on the floor. ❤😊 I have the forest green one bought in 2018 and I just bought newer version in black. I think the older version is better. I’m waiting for a better girlie color to come out. Like a Maroon or red or pastel color. ❤

Last year, after my back pack got drenched in rain and ruined almost everything inside during a rainstorm, I was looking around to get a quality bag. I was oblivious of all the lesser known products and almost bought a brand new Tumi. Then I came across this channel, and discovered so much! Fast forward to 2022, I’ve got a Code of Bell XPac, Aer Tech Pack, and Day Sling, plus so many pouches and packing cubes, all within the price range of a single Tumi backpack. Thank you.

I have this bag, plus the roll on (international size) and shaving kit. I used the kit extensively during my overseas work and could easily fit 10-14 days worth of clothes (yes, at times some hotel laundry was required) but I did multiple overseas trips and never checked my luggage. The monogram patch can be removed and/or replaced. I’ve since retired and plan to give the set to my daughter who will personalize it with her own monogram. A couple of things I really like - quality, guarantee, look and style. Now, one disclaimer when I traveled internationally I did so in Business class so the overhead luggage area are larger. I’m not sure the roll on would fit in the overhead luggage in coach.

At Last!! Excellent review. I don't have this backpack, mainly for the reasons you stated - it is pretty popular though. I don't see many people filling this out and wearing it on their back. Instead, I see them putting it on their carry-on luggage mostly when it is full. That might be a reason it is so thick. Also, when it is not so filled, I see people with it cinched quite close to their body, but because it is not so full, it does not protrude so much backward. People who have this bag seem to love it, while people who don't have it seem to criticize it. It is one of Tumi's best sellers. I have a number of Tumi backpacks and have always liked the softer designed ones. The reason is because of how they fit. They have that softness to the back that I enjoy a lot. I have the Tumi London Leather as my main travel backpack, and I love it. It is one of the most comfortable business travel backpacks. I say Business Travel backpacks because when you travel for business, you are not going hiking with your backpack. It is coming to the airport in a car or on some transport, and it has to be on your back for a limited amount of time. The most important feature is organization. The size and fit are important, but you will not wear it all day. Also, it needs to let you easily access your kit when it is off your back. Tumi backpacks seem to have this down, and I love how they handle these things. Some of the vintage backpacks are even better designed than some of the newer ones. As many have said, the Search backpack is one to review along with the Navigation backpack. These are the newest in the Alpha-Bravo range that is so very good. I, along with many others, would love to hear your impression of these bags. They are most likely headed for a place in our rotation, so your thoughts would absolutely be important. Someone said to me that the average Tumi customer had 6 Tumi bags. I think that is probably about accurate. I pretty much only buy Tumi - although I have recently bought Samsonite and Aer. I keep coming back to Tumi for some reason, and I love their slings. Every Tumi customer cannot be completely wrong. As a final note - After years of going through backpacks - I bought a Tumi Backpack in 2010 and another in 2013. Both are still in use today (the one I purchased in 2013 is in almost daily or at least weekly use). That is value for money and not expensive at all, especially as the exterior and interior look fantastic. They have been all over the world but have held up incredibly well. Thanks for doing this review - getting your thoughts is great for us but really great for Tumi so that their designs can be better. I know that they will be listening because people listen to you and your thoughts, as evidenced by the comments. I look forward to more Tumi reviews in the future. Great job as usual - so glad I am subbed.

So happy to see this review! I used to own this bag, until last month : /, but returned it for exactly the issues you raised. The design is super uncomfortable, even thought the organization is awesome. There's zero back support and whenever I put it down I heard the laptop hit the ground. Even something simple like a back panel frame sheet might solve some of the issues. I do love the organization, and materials, but a backpack has to be comfortable on your back, that was a deal breaker for me. Also hard to access the front organizer card pocket. That said, my favorite thing about this bag is it really feels like your office on the go. You can set it down next to you at a coffee shop and it stands up with everything you need super easy to access.

I've owned the leather version of the this bag for years. Finally accepted the hit on my ego and switched for the following reasons. Hope this helps! - Too bulky with no way to compress it. I started to wrap a belt around it so I could compress it. - Shoulder straps are terrible support, especially when fully loaded. Don't even think about wearing this for long haul trips. - Back mesh gets very sweaty and not designed with any air ways to facilitate cooling. - Bag itself is already very heavy and does not conform against your back. Might as well be wearing a turtle shell. - Omega zipper pulls are useless marketing. They've done nothing for me. - Looks terrible while wearing a suit despite Tumi catering to that audience. - Not enough grab handles. Just one on top (very sturdy through) - Luggage pass thru can get extremely tight when the bag is fully packed. They should have made it a bit looser. - Extremely overpriced for what it is and the minimal functionality. Especially relative the new generation of bags on the market. - Tumi tracer ID is totally useless. No different than having a luggage tag honestly. - Some Positives. Monogramming is free at any Tumi store. Can even do replacements for free. Solid material build and stands up on floor. Side pockets are great for compartmentalizing and I like that I can hide my water bottle / umbrella as one of the pockets are lined with water resistant material. Main compartment zips all the way open so allows for convenient access.

For everyone here trashing TUMI clearly they could never afford to buy one so they understand the quality and the POU ( philosophy of use). TUMI are specifically build for business and frequent flyers in mind and they excel in that! They are not meant to be hiking or mountain packs! Yes they are more heavy but thats because they are overbuild to withstand years of traveling. You should also take into consideration when you buy a TUMI pack the service is excellent. You can basically go into any TUMI shop , even in airports, and fix on the spot any normal issues without having to send the backpack to the company ,which lets face it its a hustle! Oh and yes TUMI is owned by Samsonite but you cannot even compare they quality of the two. Its like saying that a Lamborghini car is an overpriced Audi becuase Audi own Lamborghini. I have used plenty of backpacks and each brand makes packs for specific purposes. Point is whenever I travel TUMI will always be my go to bag!

Awesome review. Very honest about some of their negatives. I the look of tumi but I always find their bags to be less than ideal or simply not functional. As you mentioned, it just doesn’t feel comfortable; especially when it’s stuffed. And the front pockets with the organizers are hard to use when you have big hands.

I have one from Black Friday. $600 is a rubbery. The only reason I bought it was to find how great it is as all my friends recommend and use this brand except myself used OGIO and Wenger. TUMI was made in China(More specifically Jiangsu), It cannot cost more than 100 bucks considering material. However, it is just damn hard to find an alternative, Wenger is great but their looks were so unprofessional. OGIO has quality issue which I cannot recommend. So, here it is. A decent bag, but no matter how or what, as long as it stays as a daily pack, it cannot go up to 600bucks. If we ignore the ID protection, we can get as low as to $50/ea with SAME quality. Brand worth more than item.

I would like a Tumi bag I just can’t justify the price. I found bags with similar material and quality for way less I often find that they are made at the same factory same materials different logo. Hey Tom, you know... I had a Tumi London and I loved the material design of that bag and the organization. There was even a pass through zip panel from the laptop to the main compartment which was wonderful. But I let the bag go. There was no structure in the back panel and simply wasn't comfortable under load. Such a bummer because I really loved it. Such a different aesthetic than all my MW bags. Normally Tumi bags come with leather zipper pulls that you can attach... search the pockets! 8-)

I have several TUMI backpacks and briefcases both in leather and the ballistic nylon. I am disappointed with TUMI. Besides being extremely expensive, after time, the ballistic nylon backpacks/briefcases emits a smell that comes from the material in addition the interior that is exposed without any lining gets gummy. To mitigate this I've used Baby Cornstarch powder. Also, when the backpack is full to capacity, it's soo heavy, it should have load-lifter straps, compression straps, and a hip belt. For the price, they should include all the features of an AER travel backpack which is a better buy for the price.

I'd say it is not a great pack at full price. HOWEVER, I live next to an outlet that has the bag at half off. I have a messenger bag I got from them I use for work that was 60% off when I bought it. If I hadn't spilled any coffee on it, you couldn't tell I've used it every weekday for 7 years. I may grab the Alpha for some work travel I have coming. Like most "luxury" brands, their build quality is nice but it's better to wait for a sale.

@@PackHacker2 A Peak Design Everyday Backpack that could actually lock if they ever finally made one. 😒 There are so many nice backpacks out there to be honest, PGYTech, Thule, Manfrotto, WNDRD and the list goes on, I find it best to just own a bunch and then pick from what you want or feel like going with on a certain day. Honestly other than being unable to lock and generally not really great for taking camera gear, I loved my Everyday Backpack, you could throw a ton of stuff into it and the top opening section was fantastic for flying, so easy to open and close it without taking it from under the seat when it was in front of you and it's probably still the best looking bag out there, especially in ash with the leather handles like I had. I also loved that latch.

Totally overpriced. This backpack in my opinion looses off against the AER travel pack 3 in just about every category (especially with the x-PAC version). And paying 600 bucks for a laptop compartment with no suspended bottom ist just ridiculous. Like the review very much. Resume is: Tumi is for people who want to show off that they spend a hell of a lot of money for their Tumi bag 😉. If you are into practicability, quality or excellent design there are much better options. Pack Hacker unveils the truth 🙌

Good question Eric. First; a top notch laptop protection system. If you have the budget for a $600 bag, there is a reasonable chance you have a nice (expensive) laptop to protect. Second; zipper pulls that are silent (no, were not paying extra for that). Third; a super comfortable harness set up. Forth; I would like the ability to open the clamshell main compartment fully. Use a zipper or hook and loop so the gusset can separate to allow the clamshell to open fully. Maxpedition uses internal straps and locking hooks on both sides of their clamshell bags to give you both full open access or top loading access, very smart. I have total respect for Tumi, they make top quality items. That being said this Tumi has nothing on bags like the Tom Bihn Synapse 25 (8.7 score on Packhacker). The Tom Bihn Synapse is half the price ($320). Heck $320 is a lot for a backpack for most people. People generally pay the price for expensive items because they are superior. Superior items require attributes that justify the cost. This Tumi backpack has no attribute that makes it superior. Thusly no justification of the price. If you have more money than brains go buy the Tumi. Show it off to your rich friends, then have your butler bring me a cocktail.
@PackHacker2
@PackHacker2 2 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you for the detailed insights 😃 I agree-the Synapse is an expensive bag, but for good reason. It has a ton of features that justify a higher price tag. Whether you’re willing to pay it or not is another thing, but it’s justified. This pack performs fairly well, but the features it offers just can’t match the price tag. Again, thanks for sharing! -Eric

Just like everyone else, you're doing it wrong: it's not an objective conclusion, evaluation. Personally, the bag isn't worth $600 to you because of the sagging. But you would have to say: everyone has to decide for themselves whether it is unpleasant for them or whether it is okay for them. This disqualifies you from an objective assessment. A pity. And like all testers, you forget the extremely good service from Thommy. If something breaks, you have a years-long warranty. Thommy even repairs a ten-year-old bag. I've had my Thommy products for decades. This was also bought with the high prices. Everyone forgets that when buying a bag like this, especially so-called testers like you. Thumbs down.
