Is This a New Type of Clone Trooper?

When Vice Admiral Rampart sends an assassin against the clone trooper whistleblowers, he doesn't just send any individual, he sends a specially trained trooper named Clone X. We take a look at who Clone X potentially could be and what it means for the future of the clones. Is he just a one off experiment or a sign of what's to come for the clones?

It's no secret most countries around the world have a special forces or black ops teams that's made up of elite battle hardened soldiers. I think the assassin is simply a battle hardened soldier who his superiors recognized his cold personality and brutal efficiency, wiped his number, and simply gave him new armor, weapons, and sent him on the most important missions such as removing problematic individuals, much like crosshair actually.

I did some research and I found out about a clone trooper variant that fits this new clone trooper. In Star Wars legends there are covert ops clone troopers. These are trained to do the dirty work like hunting deserters, showing no remorse in killing other clones. Additionally they follow the direct orders of the supreme chancellor’s office only. It is quite possible that this is supposed to be the canon version of them

@@FLAMEalan Well Captain Rex was one of the most distinguished clones in the Clone Wars. Iirc he not only led the 501st he also led/recruited for the ARC trooper program. He personally served alongside Anakin Skywalker, a war hero of the Clone Wars, too. We get a very biased view of him in the clone wars, but I think it fair to say he was well known amongst his fellow clones, if not across the Galaxy as a whole.

I just think this is a clone assassin. That was trained to be insanely loyal to their order or republic/empire. His tracking skills is great and his shots are pretty good.

The big issue I see with Clone X being Slick is Rex didn't recognize him. It has been shown clones can differentiate between the other quite easily. I mean without his armor, Rex was immediately identified and the only thing that stands out is his buzzed head. There were literal millions of clones grown for the war. It's impossible to think Rex was the only person with that cut. If this was Slick, there's no reason Rex wouldn't know him given he served under the captain of the 501st and particularly arrested Slick with Cody's help.

Slick was probably court martialed and executed. It was early war and infuences of their kaminoan breeding were still big thing.

IMHO Assassin X was a Purge Trooper. It's canon that the last batch of clones went to the Purge Corps and we know for a fact the last batch of clones have already left Kamino since it was just destroyed.

Really, Slick was just a throwaway character for one episode who doesn't even get mentioned ever again. I think Clone X might've been just like Crossair, a firm believer in the Empire who worked for someone close to Palpatine and is also a rival to Rampart.

Spartai clone was my first thought too with this guy. Maybe the term will be redefined for clones who have had their inhibitor chips turbo charged, or that are just naturally loyal fanatics like the assassin, and Crosshairs. I wonder whatever happened to Dogma? After all he was only arrested for killing a Jedi. Maybe Dogma was the assassin, but with his tattoo removed and haircut standardized

Alternatively in Season 6 durring the discovery of the Biochip AZ revealed to Fives that they were going to erase his memories and send him to Janitorial duties. If this technology was perfected the Empire could use it to effectively factory reset Clones back to when they just graduated still having their training intact but with no influence from the Jedi and no memories of what the Empire is like.

That’s a very good observation about Clone Trooper Slick. I had forgotten all about him. You have a pretty good theory in the making. On another note, I do not get a warm, fuzzy feeling from the names of the final two episodes of the season, especially the finale. The title “Plan 99” sounds too much like “Order 66”. No way to know which way the chips may fall, but something big is on the horizon.

I've heard theories that it was a 0th phase Dark Trooper but it never occurred to me that it could've been Slick. But on the other hand it would've been nice if Rex and Slick were forced to work together against the Empire and realize that both of them were wrong.

One thing I wanna bring up with Slick that you overlooked is that, while yes he did this for credits, but he primarily also wanted freedom. A life away from being a slave to the Republic army as a soldier. But I have to imagine during all that time in prison, Slick would've been given some rework Slick's brain to fit the Galactic Empire's agenda if he is Clone X as punishment for betraying the Republic way early on in the war.

I suspect that "Clone X" might have been a Dark Trooper. The early Dark Troopers had organic brains as well as robotic components as opposed to the later ones that were pure droid. The thing about clone troopers is unlike their droid opponents they could think creatively. A dark trooper also has a human brain which can think creatively but could possibly be more programable just like a droid.

So it means that even if the clones' rebellion won't become a thing, Palpatine can orchestrated one anyway? Why? And will that will make the idea of recruiting Stormtroopers becoming more popular, why orchestrating another crisis despite the fact that he has so many options to choose such as the Partisans, the Mimban Liberation Army, the Twi'leks' rebellion and some Separatist holdouts out there.

Because all of those crises were being dealt with by clones. If Palpatine could convince everyone that the clones were disloyal to the Empire, and potentially even in kahoots with those rebel groups, popular support for a Stormtrooper program would skyrocket. Now, I don't think Palpatine is going to do this, but I wouldn't put it past him, either.

I did find it very weird that Clone X only talked about being a believer, not a good soldier (that follows orders), which so far has been the sign that a clone is being controlled by the inhibitor chip. So I'm not 100% sure that your theory about Clone X being a clone with a hypercharged inhibitor chip is right.

He knew rex. Everyone thought rex is dead and he looks like a old clone. Unless he was an unknown 501st I think he is a clone that has been modified with the knowledge of every clone in some kind of data base. Perhaps he is apart of a security detachment from palpatine. could it be appo?

No, Appo's still Commander of the 501st under Vader. At the time of this episode, he was probably busy helping to "adjust" the government of a planet that wasn't totally loyal to the Empire, as the 501st did do a lot of those kinds of missions after the Clone Wars. I even have my suspicions that Appo's 501st were the ones to overthrow Bo-Katan and place Gar Saxon in charge of Mandalore. But that's kinda unrelated to this.

I never gave it a thought that the clone assassin could be Slick all along. It kind of makes sense. You never hear of Slick after his betrayal. If this is him, it would be a bit of irony. He wants freedom but would end up being a slave yet again under the Empire.

Dark Troopers from the old Battlefront 2 were known as "Phase 0" Dark Troopers. They were clone troopers enhanced with cybernetics to continue their service with the Empire even with their advance age. A common theory of Clone X is he's a Phase 0.

I headcanon this as Admiral Rampart trying to retroactively create a "Bad Batch"-esque unique Clone, but he just slapped a normal trooper into an exosuit instead of having one bred differently.

Clone assassin's are in legends. In the Republic Commando novels (True Colors), 2 clone assassin's were hunting down an awol ARC only to get killed by a clone commando named Darman. They seem to hunt deserters and traitors.

I think Clone-X is a Dark Trooper MK-1. Moff Gideon has Dark Trooper MK-3's which means there needs to be a MK-1 and MK-2; It makes sense that the MK-1 was made with Clones.

Or maybe a mk.0, a prototype darktrooper mk.1 without their more customary armour and weapons in line with new imperal doctrine. A dark trooper who retains more of their humanity than most would. The success of clone x as an assasin would provide a platform for discretely testing the dark trooper program.

A very interesting theory, although for me, its more likely that clone x is just one of the many regular clones specially trained to be clone assassins that you see pop up in the revenge of the sith game defending the jedi temple beacon.

Initial Dark trooper program tests had “humans as pilots” until it was decided the human was the last weak link in the program, so it was changed to a full droid unit. My guess is it’s the early pre-cursor to the Dark Troopers, and we might see the rest filled in later episodes or series to connect to the ones we later see in Mandalorian.

Clone X is a Spaarti clone that had memories of a selected for a template clone trooper from the 501st Legion. The order was voted for in the senate to increase the clone army with 5 million more clones. They know new clones will be available at least 9 years from the moment the vote is passed, so I don't think anyone would be stupid enough to think it is a good idea to pay for reinforcement that will arrive at least 9 years later. The only reasonable solution is to use Spaarti clones to reinforce the army.

Well, I doubt it’s Slick. Rex didn’t recognize the clone and clones are able to tell the difference between each other. It’s possible he’s a Spaarti clone as the Imperial Cloning Program has begun. But then how would he know Rex? I used to think maybe he was a clone who became a mercenary, but he’s clearly an Imperial loyalist. So, I have no idea who this Clone X is. He’s at least some special Imperial soldier, but I don’t know if his inhibitor chip is still active. Maybe he heard of Rex who became a sort of legend just like Anakin during the Clone Wars. But there’s just too many unknowns to know who this guy is. At the very least, it seems like he personally works for Rampart as he did order Clone X to specifically ensure nothing can be traced to him. Just because the soldier was a believer wouldn’t mean his assassin position was an official one. After all, having personnel specifically loyal to you is probably a great thing to have in a system that includes backstabbing, betrayal and very ambitious people.

I think clone X might be Dogma or related to him in some way. Dogma was fairly zealous in his loyalty to the GAR, executing an actual rogue Jedi no inhibitor chip needed. When order 66 activated he and any clone like him would have basically worshipped the empire but Dogma especially would be vindicated immeasurably when the Jedi betrayed the republic. Post order 66 I have no doubt they would have cut dogma loose to effectively become a profit to the other clones to start a sort of cult. I'm aware dogma had tattoos but I suspect they certainly have ways to remove tattoos, we did see them turn obiwan into draco hardeen and back again. This return to default appearance may be something this clone cult does to better serve as what the republic needed them to be, to become pure and uniform once to serve the empire.
