17:20 - Those are the "bum" characters, which are recurring parts of some of the NC videos. Doug even used to do "bum reviews" where he dressed up as the bum and acted like a crazy person reviewing movies in a very short amount of time, and every single movie he bum-reviewed was "the greatest movie I've ever seen in my life!" @@theduckgoesmoo Les Miserables: A convict becomes mayor of a town under a new name while being hunted by his former jailor. Meanwhile, he tries to raise the daughter of a woman who lost everything and died, when years later a minor revolution happens in France. Passable as a movie, but terrible as an adaptation of a musical, which was adapted from a book written by the same man who did Hunchback of Notre Dame. Phantom of the Opera: A disformed man with a mask and a beautiful singing voice decides to be the secret mentor (and lover, maybe, might just be a parental figure, I'm not sure right now) of the up and coming star of an opera company, kidnapping her to teach her how to sing, and threatening the company with acts of vandalism if she doesn't get the lead. All the while, he's competing with her childhood friend turned lover for her affection. Terrible movie and god-awful adaptation, they completely missed what drew people in to the stage play. Moulin Rouge: I have no idea what is going on. I may have gotten the summaries a bit wrong. It's been a while.

The thing with CATS is that its hard to understand what its meant to be if you don't know anything about musical theatre. The makers of this film didn't understand it. Its what is known as an ensemble piece. These shows have no main characters and are constructed around a loose idea or theme where each piece showcases the abilities of the entire cast. Another famous musical of this type is A Chorus Line where the framing device is literally a theatre audition. CATS was always meant to be a dance-centric piece with a framing device based on the poems of TS Elliot. As follows: A group of cats, called the Jellical Cats, meet together once a year to have the Jellical Ball and choose one cat to become immortal and live forever in the Heaviside Layer. This year the cats invite a group of humans to observe meaning the audience is a part of the show. The songs/dance numbers are several cats presenting their case to become the immortal cat. An old, outcast cat named Grizzabella is selected to be that immortal cat. The costumes and set were just meant to communicate they were cats in a city alley not be realistic. As you can see the movie over complicated it trying to make it, well a movie, with a plot it never really had. They expanded on some of the connective sketches that were only meant to bridge the gaps between the dance numbers (like Macavity kidnapping the leader cat briefly) and tried to make a story out of them. That's why it doesn't work. If you want to see CATS as it was meant to be seen then I recommend a recording of the play for a camera as if on a stage not this movie. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpXWoJ-gdqaNmLc

4:32 - Fritz the Cat was an adult comic series that was adapted into two films (Fritz the Cat, and The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat) which were basically just fetish films filled with racism, social commentary, drug use, explicit sex, and a ton of graphic violence. The creator of the comics hated the movies so much, he just straight-up killed off the titular character in the comics.
@theduckgoesmoo3 жыл бұрын

@northwindkey Жыл бұрын
I would argue they're more than fetish films. Bahkshi is an insane filmmaker, but he is saying something with his films (Minus Cool World which was rewritten out of his hands). He's just saying it in an insane and intentionally provocative way. Essentially, if Fritz the Cat made that guy uncomfortable, it means the movie WORKED.
@DieselWeasel Жыл бұрын
@@northwindkey When you're adapting someone's work, you should be trying to please them. There wasn't really a message to the Fritz movies, ESPECIALLY the second one.
@northwindkey Жыл бұрын
@@DieselWeasel I disagree. Sometimes adaptations can become more meaningful for the changes, and sometimes an author can’t understand that film has to change things or see the value because they’re too close to their own interpretation. Just look at Mary Poppins. The original author HATED the movie. But nobody remembers the book, we remember the film. It was a masterclass in cinema, mostly BECAUSE of the changes. Things like this happen in the film world itself too. The ending of The Shawshank Redemption is an emotional powerhouse. The director never even wanted to shoot it, he hated it. He was too close to his vision of the ending to accept that the changed one was better. Hell, on the topic of Stephen King adaptations, King DESPISES Kubrick’s Shining film. Y’know, one of the greatest films ever made. King hates it, he’s too close to his interpretation to see how good another can be. Art is about interpretation. Nobody, not even the author, has any say in what something can “mean” any more than anyone else. Because it means something different to everyone, and sometimes the most effective interpretations can be different from the author’s. And while the author mostly just wants to preserve their story, it can cross into pretentiousness and gatekeeping against new interpretations. Alan Moore hated the V For Vendetta movie because it changed the allegory to fit modern America as opposed to 80s Britain. But that change made the movie so much more poignant and relevant, so much more impactful. Alan Moore was so concerned with making it like his work, that he didn’t see that the changes were actually creating a message as poignant for one audience as his was for another. Bakshi’s Fritz The Cat has stuck with people. It embedded itself into a lot of our minds. That doesn’t happen with a cheap fetish film like Foodfight, it happens when someone actually uses bad taste to say something. To challenge audiences, to make us feel wrong for the right reasons. The original comic? A footnote in history. Like Mary Poppins, the original wasn’t necessarily better or more meaningful. And the author was too close to the story to see that.

So far this seems to be like a good reawakening of the Nostalgia Critic. He had a series of reviews that tried very hard to be less review heavy and more focused on skits. One of the biggest maelstrom of critiques and slamming was on his review of the animated Pink Floyd movie The Wall. Which was pretty much nothing but skits. This was on top of a slow descent of reviews over the course of a couple years that seemed to follow this formula followed by a lot of allegations over the Channel Awesome website that goes into ridiculous detail about a lot of bad things behind the scenes and to this day despite it being front and center that Doug himself apparently knows little to nothing about video editing as well as directing others without support in properly doing it without just telling them to be like him. I think he actually has a good core personality and meaning. As a person with a neurological disability or autism to be frank it may be safe to say that he possibly does have some form of autism diagnosed or not that could limit his understanding of these things. And considering his reaction to people that love him but poke fun at him with impressions like Oneyng compared to how someone like Linkara who is I believe still a small member of Channel awesome handled their live heckling at him from a fan perspective. I dont think Doug is a bad person. Financially and from many business perspectives he's made some really poor decisions but I think he's a genuinely good guy. I definitely don't want to pin the Channel Awesome drama on him nowadays even if its unclear to me at least if he's just unaware or not of what's happened to a company he sold to some guy behind the scenes all these years while retaining creative rights. But seeing one of these newest reviews that's more review and less attempting skits tells me that he does listen and has heard fans even if it took time. Sorry for the rant. Theres a lot of history with this series good and bad with a lot of different truths and allegations. Drama and other stuff. But seeing this and drunkenly typing while watching made me think how maybe Doug really is a nice guy. He's just made some mistakes and has some problems with things some normal people would be profound at.

The behind the scenes of the movie is SO AWFUL! The source recalls 90-hour work weeks, and decries Hooper as a “horrible” and “condescending” director with no clue as to how animation works. At one point, they claim, Hooper demanded “to see videos of actual cats performing the same actions the cats would do in the film.” The source says, “And as you know, cats don‘t dance.” They also alleged the team was forced to work for six months on the film’s two-minute trailer, which left them only four months to complete the rest of the film. This crunch made increasingly difficult by the number of visual effects supervisors who left the film due to Hooper allegedly talking to them like they were “garbage.” “It was pure, almost slavery for us, how much work we put into it with no time, and everything was difficult,” the source said. “We were so rushed on the project that we’d have no time for anything. So when people say, ‘Oh, the effects were not good,’ or ‘The animation’s not good,’ or anything, that’s not our fault. We have no time. Six months to do a two-minute trailer and four months to do a film of an hour and a half. My math is pretty good... You could figure that doesn’t make any sense.” Say what you want about the movie, but i feel terrible to these people who worked hard to appease an a-hole director. That joke that James and Rebel made at the Oscars was SOOO IN POOR TASTE!!! It’s bullying, and that’s not cool! P.S. He may have won an Oscar for The King’s Speech, but he’s such an overrated director with success going all over his head, consumed by his ego

Cats is more about the personalities than a particular storyline and the creativity that goes into a production of it can be brilliant. The movie is terrible and didn’t get the idea of it at all. I mean it doesn’t help that the musical is literally based off of a book of poetry about… cats… Yep… So look at it more as a personification of a book of poems held together by a very small common thread.

14:32 "What's love got to do with it" is both the title of a song Tina Turner sang and the title of a biographic movie. In the song she worked through her difficult past with her abusive ex husband, hence the comparison. Also I don't care how experimental and what-ever this movie was.
