I have this one. The best way to get polished modern high gain and fast-responsive tone without hiss is to switch to the red channel through an overdrive pedal such as OD808, and you need to add more treble and presense so that it will sound more juicy and biting. It is a quite versatile amp for modern subgenres of rock and metal.

I have an older and not-so-common Randall RT100, which was released right before Fortin came to Randall. I wish it had a presence and resonance, otherwise I love it death. With a boost/OD in front and an EQ in the loop, it can do anything and sounds amazing.

I've had one since 2019, I love mine. A good TS and get your high end from the treble instead of the presence will get you more of the sizzle. The presence gives it an unpleasant high end. Also, the boost just activates an extra preamp gain stage.

Hey @kylebull thanks for making this video! I own an RD20 that I haven't been able to use for almost a year because I was living in an apartment and almost got evicted for playing. Now that I'm in my first house I've been playing, but actually forgot how to dial in a good tone setting on this amp. Your video reminded me that being generous with presence and bass on this amp is a good thing. Thanks for that, I dialed it in with my EMG 85 loaded guitar and a Boss SD-1 and now it sounds awesome. I was thinking I might ditch it for a different amp before your video today! Thanks for saving me some cash!

i watched his earlier demo of the rd45h and i couldn't help to think that it seemed liked i was watching someone that didn't believe a word that THEY THEMSELVES were saying - LOL - the rd45h and the rd100h sound incredible - and he KNOWS it.. his riffs were flowing off of his guitar with effortlessness, the tone sounded perfect for so many reasons and his eyes were admitting it.. LOL - this amp sounds AMAZING and that is the truth - no matter who makes it or where it was made or how much it costs... I love Kyle's channel and he totally kills on guitar - the only thing i can maybe think of is of remembering about his review of the Splawn Amps where Kyle makes a point of how the Splawns "challenge the guitar player" because Splawn will highlight every lazy mistake you make while playing them and that maybe the Randall was just way TOO easy to sound absolutely f**king amazing...???? - LOL - ROCK ON !!!!

Damn. Sounded awesome! But yeah, it’s got that Fortin metallic clank going and I get that you’re not a great fan of such. Regardless, it’ll kill in a mix on either of the gain gain channels with the rest being about taste. The boost button affects all channels, I believe, but somewhat differently. \m/

I bought my RD45H from GC about six months ago. It was a steal compared to some of the other listings. It was right around $550 after tax. $580 total I believe. I came from a 6505 MH (good riddance) to the diavlo. This amp is so much better imo, I guess going from el84’s to full size 6l6’s can do that. But admittedly it does need taming. I run a peppers dirty tree sometimes alone and sometimes into an additional OD depending on the guitar. Paired with an EQ in the loop I find I’m getting pretty good modern metal sounds out of it. Its not the 5150 I’ve always wanted but I like its sound. Ohh and the clean channel is pretty good IMO.

I like it, it's very smooth and punchy. A BBE sonic maximizer pedal in the loop would fix the lack of presence and get rid of the blanket on the speaker thing. The built in boost is a really nice feature. I can't figure out why more high gain amps don't add a built in boost.

I personally think that the Peavey 5150 & 6505 have too much fizzy high end & I love Peavey. No matter how much I dial down the treble there was still fizziness & obviously there’s this muffled wooomp from an unbalanced frequency fight where the treble is around two on the dial & the bass knob is at six. But if you turn the bass down then the upper treble frequency starts to ice pick my ears again. As I said I love Peavey & I really haven’t tried much of any other brand so what I figured out was that if I stay dedicated to finding a killer tone with Peavey I would literally try anything & everything I could think of. So I threw an EQ pedal & a secret little weapon that Ibanez makes called the B9 Bottom booster in my pedal chain. I must say between adding enough of the treble to where it’s not fizzy but not losing bottom end either, to me it was the best combination. A well balanced configuration 😉

I completely agree, I kinda hate this thing too. Maybe a speaker like a K100/K85 or DV77 would help tame some of the harshness. Does it sound really dry in the room too? It does seem to handle lower tunings better than standard, but it still lacks personality.

This is certainly one of the amps of all time.... being a 6505 person myself, it doesn't have the sizzle and bite I like. With all that low end, it would be decent for a single guitar player band doing slower/heavier stuff, I did like it in Drop C... but the gain doesn't seem to work well for quick single note separation.

I own the RD-45H among a handful of other tube amps. I was never able to get what I considered a good high gain tone out of it. The tone controls were pretty hard to dial in, the 'boost' hardly adds any gain and the overall gain setting was lacking. Even on high volume where many tube amps sound their best, I never noticed a big difference. Unlike most amps where you can find several good tones, I was only ever able to find one that worked for practice. Max gain, treble, mids, 75% bass and play with the presence until you like it. What I have heard is that it is a really good pedal amp due to how strong the mids are. I suppose with enough pedals and post processing, anything can sound good.
