Is this boat seaworthy? Surveyor performs pre-purchase survey on a Maxi 84 yacht

The 43-year-old Swedish yacht has been sitting in a boatyard in Chichester for two years. Maximus is the latest PBO Project Boat. It's a tradition of the magazine to rescue boats and relaunch them.
Features editor Ali Wood has taken ownership of this one and will share her journey from first-time boat owner to DIY-er, with the help of PBO's experts.
Towards the end of the survey the boat's current owner Daniel Kirtley arrives, and we find out why he's giving up his 5-berth cruiser.

I found this tremendously useful. It's a surveyor's job to find what's faulty, what might become so, what could be expensive and what's better than average, and to give an honest report to the client. Finding things later that a surveyor should have noted is very irritating. Knowing that a boat hasn't been in the water for two years would, you'd think, flag up that the batteries are going to be flat so taking a portable battery pack seems obvious to me.

Strange he didn't check the mast support which is one of the most famous weaknesses on the Maxies...... Mine had partly collapsed just under the maststep.

sorry to ask questions but how much should i pay for a survey on a boat that's worth 10 000 pounds 31 feet

Survey cost is prety much based on lenght of the boat, and to a lesser degree if it's grp/wood/steel, but not the value/age. Probably around £500-£700 but that won't usually include mast/above head height rigging or a full engine inspection which are specialist jobs.

I'm wrong-headed I know . . . . but I intensely dislike a person who so obviously enjoys finding fault - the implication is that they'd do 'it' better. Putting this guy into the same box as television "journalists". May as well throw a match in it.

Really sorry for you to survey those boats, because brittle thermoset resin is not seaworthy even in perfect condition, not to mention cored hulls and those people get scammed with corporate design manslaughter to give more "adventure risk" to summer competition sailboats that "trickle down" to cruisers and sailors. You can cover those hulls with flexible outer chambers and skin of flexible polypropylene or HDPE to bend under impact and make them unsinkable and don't grow fouling, increasing initial stability by modifying stern and bow, also the keel can be removed reducing structural stresses and incorporating water or bulk grain ballast, an use cat ketch or other small heigh right to reduce heeling, while also covering the deck with aluminum mylar and epoxy to stop UV degradation. Those simple hacks can extend the life of thermoset stayed keelboats that are product of a disgusting petrol lobby on shipyards, sailing competition and magazines during the last mid-century

@@ohnezuckerohnefett your only clue seems to be petrochemical refinery waste chemicals advertising that sponsor and floods all magazines and things related to sailing. You can salvage any boat of any material but that doesn't mean these were materials to use in a boat structure

This is a moody?? Seaworthy! !!fuel tank, take the cover off. Only 4 screws!!!! Take £7500 and save mooring/standing charges.
