Keypads have some amazing benefits for gaming and professional users who want a more compact setup. But some people think these single handed devices are pointless. We set out to find which one it is and how these keypads have evolved over time. Well the Razer Tartarus v2 with its mecha-membrane switches and Chroma lighting seems to be a perfect solution for FPS games at least but there's some important limitations too.

red_array you just have to make one of the keys a shift/alt and you enable the same amount of binds. If you look at how Swifty plays, since he doesn’t have a pinky, he uses the joystick for key binds rather than movement. Lots of options, especially with the one that has an integrated scroll wheel.

I cannot game without one of these. I own a Tartarus, Tartarus V2, and Two Orbweavers. When I transferred from consoles to PC gaming I never was able to adapt to using the keyboard. I use the thumbstick for movement, feels like using analog stick on a controller... Kinda but it's better. Funny thing is I also use a Naga. I would hate it if they made these anymore like a keyboard. In my opinion doing so would defeat the purpose. I see it as a keyboard alternative not a compact keyboard.

I love mine. I had an Orbweaver v1, Orbweaver v2/chroma, and now this. The hardest part of these is fighting keyboard muscle memory. When I first tried it, I gave up after a few hours because it just felt awkward. I boxed it back up ready to return the next day. But since the local bestbuy/microcenter return window is 30 days, I figured that returning it the next day vs returning it on day #30 would be no different, so I gave it more time. I'm so glad I did. These keypads work best when you forget the notions of a keyboard and use it as a blank canvas - that means forgetting keyboard muscle memory (very hard to do). To me, the "ah-a" moment was using the DPAD as movement. Honestly, relegating the thumb - the most useful digit on our hand - to just 2-3 buttons that are infrequently used makes no sense. Controlling critical functions of reload, use, sprint, etc on the same fingers that are used to move around? A lot of people shift some of these functions to mouse buttons, but now you're adding more for your AIMING HAND to do. Yet on a controller, movement is handled by ONE thumb, the most dexterous part of the human body. I use "08" as sprint (the W of WASD). Why relegate the frequently used sprint/walk key to the weakest pinky? Now it's a more comfortable forward finger. Now 07,09,12,14 are a grid of weapon selection readily available by the pointer and ring finger while I still have pinky and pointer for reload, crouch, use/interact, etc. Prone is 13, right below sprint, so I just roll my finger down as if I was diving prone when I need that function. I play division 2 and tons of other keybind-heavy games and have no problem with key binds since abandoning the "WASD" mindset. Button above the d-pad is map, the space bar below is inventory - makes sense because you're never moving AND opening map/inventory. When you forget the notion of using it as a WASD keyboard, there's tons more flexibility. There's a learning curve trying to ween yourself off the muscle memory for sure, but using a keyboard for gaming feels SOOOOOO inefficient to me now. The other ones that are simply keypad cutouts make less sense to me. You're just replicating a keyboard in a less familiar shape - so why not just stick with the keyboard? The Tartarus/Orbweaver are more effective because the ergonomics allow for more options for experimentation. Everyone should buy one locally, and give it the full ~30 day return window to try. Don't just try it for a few hours - you won't beat YEARS of keyboard muscle memory that quickly.

If you use the thumb stick for movement, that frees 4 keys on the pad for grenade etc, with the advantage that movement with a stick is much more intuitive. Also ALL movements are covered. You don't gotta move a finger to a different key to move back. Once you program the rest of the keys and get some muscle memory, you will be a much better player than with just a normal keyboard.

I am personally a big fan of these keypads, they are very ergonomic and they allow me to take what would otherwise be 4 buttons (WASD) and move those to 1 joystick/D-pad that only takes my thumb to use. They have helped me a lot in terms of not having to play keyboard twister when I want to do something like running forward, jumping to the right, then throwing a grenade (Something I find very difficult to do with a Keyboard). My big problem with the Razer Tartarus V2 in particular though is for some reason Razer decided it was a good idea to replace the bottom right key with a scroll wheel (That key is my jump button and I am not going to try relearning a new place to put that). I found mapping buttons to ones on the keypad that feel intuitive can be a hasstle sometimes but I also found it fairly easy to get used to (It helps when you have a mouse with a few extra buttons, doesn't have to be much). I ended up mapping Grenade to a side mouse button and/or number 15 on the keypad, both feel good and having the option to use either can be useful. I have found my keypad most useful in FPS games and I would recommend at least trying a keypad out for those games.

I don't understand why you claim there aren't enough buttons on these keypads. I play Warcraft and use the Razer Tartarus Chroma (1st edition). I set up the far right column of keys (column of 3 keys on the 1st edition Chroma) as modifiers. Top to bottom; Esc (to bring up the in game menu), CTRL, and Shift. The button on the right above the thumb stick is my third modifier (ALT). Using these modifiers in conjunction with the primay bank of 12 keys (again 1st edition Chroma), I can map EVERY single command in game, everything. The only time I use my keyboard is for chat. That's it. Using modifiers gives me no less than 84 commands that I can bind. More than enough for any PC game out there.

I think he thought mainly about fps where people don't really use modifiers. Usually ctrl / shift are for walking / crouching. I guess we could use alt as a modifier for some actions like selecting a grenade type, or selecting weapons in quake. But then something like walking in diagonal + selecting a smoke (for example ALT + T) in csgo would become CTRL + W + A + ALT + T, it's a nightmare and unusable when walking to the right side because D and T are the same finger. Also ALT requires the thumb which means no jump, in quake for example the jump key must be available at all time

@@Djuntas If you are using 25 keybindings, then your hand is going to be flying around the keyboard. On the Nostromo line of keypads, the d pad is perfectly situated so that you can do movement with the thumb leaving your fingers free to do what ever you key bind them keys to. You can also set several key maps to a game profile, so you can switch between main combat, inventory management. Combine it with a gaming mouse that has several different buttons, and it becomes a whole new experience. The major problem with the synapse software though is you can't print out or name what your key mapping is. So if you don't play a game for a while, it's very easy to get flustered as you can't remember what key does what. But if you use it to play one particular game, then muscle memory soon develops and your fingers will be dancing over the key pad and your wrist will thank you for it.

Please refresh my memory a bit. Was the N52 and the Nostromo the same keypad? It's been so long I can't remember anymore. As a PC gamer I think this is of most use to people used to playing on consoles. For long time PC gamers I feel it would be hard to relearn the controls for titles we've played for years. Learning new games is probably a lot easier though. I base this on my experiences using MMO centric mice. I discovered that any in game I was reasonably proficient at I tended to forgo the programmed keys and macros, using the keyboard instead. As I'm not a competitive player I didn't feel the need to force myself to relearn the controls. I still like the idea of a programmable keypad like this, I just realize that personally I wouldn't really see a large advantage in having one.

I've been using gamepads since I first learned about them, starting with the Microsoft Commander, then the Nostromo, G13, and currently using the Razer Orbweaver. These are so much more comfortable than resting your hand over a keyboard, and the ability to reprogram any key (including macro support) makes them feel so natural in comparison. The single greatest peeve I have for them (beyond the fact that good ones come out so rarely, and long waits between generations) is that I use the thumbstick for movement - same as a controller - but the default keymappings on all these devices are using keys under the fingers.
@StellarJay77
@StellarJay77 5 жыл бұрын
That's just because game devs assume people are using regular keyboards. I typically just change the default keymapping in each game to match my default orbweaver layout. Either that or I just load my default orbweaver mapping for game type if I'm just trying out a game and then tailor a custom one if I end up playing the game for awhile.

I'm very interested in a one handed gaming pad like this for sure - though, I use these types of things(right now I use a wireless add on num pad intended for laptops to achieve similar usage) as SUPPLEMENTAL to my full size Logitech 613, rather than a complete replacement. Having never been a big fan of using keyboards for playing games(I don't get the hype, keyboards are in no way, shape, or form ergonomically designed for gaming-style use, even gaming boards making ZERO accommodations in button layout or anything - obviously the MOUSE is the 'superior' piece of the hardware combo, not the keyboard), supplemental key pads allow me to put my main game controls on the key pad, with any secondary/less commonly used controls remaining on the full size keyboard that I set just off to my left side, out of the way of the mouse(and key pad), but easily within reach being just left of the key pad. There are also supplemental num pads with mechanical switches as well, if that's important to you. This combination makes for a much more ergonomic, very flexible/configurable, and, for me, much more logical layout than just a standard keyboard. Expandable too, I really want to add a Stream Deck to the setup as well, push it to the next level. And, if I end up getting something like this too(something actually meant for gaming rather than just adding num pad capabilities to a laptop), then I probably will be able to just replace the keyboard and just use the gaming key pad, the supplemental num pad, and the Stream Deck to handle all gaming needs. BTW, using these sorts of key pads makes for a much more manageable setup if using a wheel/pedals, flight controls, etc., given that only a handful of keys on the keyboard are typically used in these setups. Underrated products!

I've been using these for years now, I started with the first Nostromo. Every time I find myself having to use a keyboard, I wonder how can people usually press some key combinations that are trivial on a device like this (movement + 2 or 3 + shift for example) I use this for every game pretty much (the alternative being a controller if I'm on couch or the game really works best with one), and I have to disagree with you on the video: the more buttons a game requires, the more the advantage is clear to me. Kinda easy use a keyboard for wasd + 4/6 buttons. I used this in WoW back when as an healer you were kind-of-expected to have 20+ binds all to be used promptly in the middle of the fight while moving. Just ctrl+ or shift+ or have it swap keymaps. Takes a while to setup, but if you do it good you only do it once and works for pretty much every game. Last time I changed my config for a game was in 2012 for XCOM. Ofc you will never replace your keyboard which is always going to sit on you desk and i still use it from time to time for non-action commands and chat. I'd love to see more options though, not just Razer's. Not so satisfied myself with Razer's hardware. I went through a LOT of these in all these years, meanwhile I still have the same keyboard (not Razer's) which is still looking and working great after 10+ years. was about the say the same, keymap switching and the ability to switch to or have a toggle like feature expands the available button macros. Usually I end up with 4 keymaps for a software and since I also own a V1, that has 15 keys...15 keys *4 is about 60 keys and macros. that's like 2 times the letter keys in a normal keyboard, plenty of keys for macros or direct keyboard remapping for games. It's just so inferior for gaming. So I bought an Orbweaver. I actually really like using it, but it broke after 2 years, requires a sign in to a terrible app, and honestly still pales in comparison the the gaming section on the merc. The only thing better about it is the ergonomics, and even then only by a slight margin. Seriously though, we need some competition in this space, and I wish they were more popular. I wish I could leave Razor for another product, but the only other gaming pad with ortholinear keys is the Ergodox EZ board... which is even more insanely expensive.

I have a Tartarus v1 + scimitar setup, but had to throw the mouse away since right click and left click buttons stopped functioning correctly. Lame. But still .. Not really like they have any sensible competition in that mmo mice segment.

Tartarus combined with a logitech G10 and moving the shift ket to the offset left click makes it really easy, also having the additional inputs on the G10 means games like the Division and Tarkov are easy enough to map as you can set a key to ALT+ which means you can cover essentially a whole keyboards worth of functions between them. The real pain is remapping it in game, however after you have found a set up that works between the two, you can map every game to be the same keys and after that it's very comfortable. I also use it for zBrush and Photoshop where I have a lot of shortcuts and CTRL+Shift or ALT+Shift functions, etc now on single keys rather than having to hold them both down.

the only thing that it needs its a analog thumb stick so you can move much better just with your thumb

@@shanewalker6986 I had just bought a 13 inch laptop so using the keyboard was fatiguing me a bit. Definitely nothing required but when playing a demon hunter it was nice to have the "stand still and shoot blindly" button mapped to a thumb button.

Just ordered mine today from Bestbuy and used my credits saved up to reduce the price down to $40.00 I'll be testing it out on games such as SCUM, CODMW2, WARZONE 2.0, and a few other steam games. I hope this was a good purchase as I always wanted one and just purchased it today.

it's honestly what you're used to. I got used to 1 handed keyboards because I switched from controller and incorrectly assumed that I would use the direction stick for movement. But I ended up learning to move with the WASD format anyways and used the stick for directions. So I never had adjustment issues with a smaller shift key for instance, never got attached to a G key, I throw grenades with my mouse..... And just as a reg keyboard player might struggle to switch, I think these boards will never truly go away because of people like me that got used to them and won't use a regular keyboard.

To all of the peeps here i say Belkin N52 Nostromo.............. Also, while it takes some time getting used to it keyboard you glance over serveral other benefits. One- it works amazing in MMO's. Have been doing so for 10 years+ secondly, it also allows users to re-bind ANY Game to the same buttons using profiles. So if for some reason Game #1 has c for crouch and can't be remapped to ctrl, simply remap the ctrl-key to C on the Tartarus. Without messing with your keyboard. Other than that... if you really want mech switches, check out the Orbweaver.

I have the original N52 Nostromo from way back in 2004. Unfortunately, it only works with my older Power Mac G4 desktop but not the current 2010 iMac I own which ticks me off. I tried plugging the Nostromo to the iMac one day, a few years ago, and it didn't work as if there was no response. Loved that keypad for my Photoshop and digital art workflow.

I just got mine today! I bought it to use it along with my drawing tablet because using a keyboard along with a one of those is a pain in the ass! I first used it with Blender and having the shortcuts all mapped in my own logical sequence makes it feel like cheating, so smooth and painless! then switched the profile to draw with Krita and OMG my left arm can finally rest! in both cases I mapped ctrl and shift to where you put them because yes, the original keymap is kinda just a regular keyboard cut in half, but absolutely any key is programmable! Plus you can use the scroll wheel to switch key maps between profiles! What's not to love? Again, I'm using a drawing tablet so for anyone who uses one, this is a must!

I use the thumb button for Hypershift, which makes it sooo much better. I find I can play most games even better than without it. Using the hypershift, I can even hit the M key to bring up my map, and keys that I normally wouldn't be able to press.

Same here bro. Except i have 5 layer of Hypershift. I can hit all key on Keyboard including numpad and F1-F12 except Caplock haha. How? Simple. including the thumb button, I also program the analog to 4 directional "Shift profile while key is press" option in razer. Literally I don't have to raise my hand when gaming with it except typing.

Sadly I doubt that's ever going to happen, while these gamepads are so good and deserve more attenion, they just don't sell and companies don't think they're worth it, razer being such a dedicated pro gaming brand they just barely get enough sales on these to make it worth it, leaving no room for anyone else to do so without charging outrageous premiums
