Ever since I read the book of extinction when I was young I’ve always wanted to know if there were animals from those pages still alive in the wild…. Hey Forrest. I've started watching your videos recently and the work you do tells me that you really care about finding and protecting rare and endangered animals. I have an intresting story of my own. For years in the southern parts of Georgia there have been sightings of "black panthers", all the way from Macon, to Waycross. I live right at the edge of the Okefenokee and have heard stories from relatives, family friends, and church members all claiming to have seen one. I myself haven't seen one, however, i have heard one, and back in 2010 my brother spotted one in the backyard of my grandmothers house. Im skeptical of the whole "black" aspect, but i do believe that people truly have seen cougars, and that there may be a small number of them out in the swamp. I dont know how, or when they got here but i do know that they arent native to this area. Anyway, i just wanted to share that with you. Love your videos.

It is hard to believe than an animal of this size could have been under the radar for 256 years, but after I first knew about the soviet report in the 60s I believed that it might be possible. That report was made by professional military of the soviet navy. They frenquently navigate that area (Vladivostok is one of the most important military bases of Russia) so it is hard to believe that they could have missidentify it. Anyway that was 60 years ago so I still don't know what to believe. Great video as always!

Steller's sea cow populations had already been dwindling since the last Ice Age, and they were already on the road to extinction. They were probably the last ice age "megafauna" of the north. These sea cows were like the mammoths of the ocean, humans just gave the final blow. I am still hopeful, some isolated population might still exist.
@Gizathecat2

just because a population is dwindling doesn’t mean it’s on it’s way to extinction- just a new baseline equilibrium. Hell, we are on our way to reduce our population to half or even down to 1/5 of our population now by the next century. But I think we’ll stick around for a long time regardless.

My main reason of speculation for the Stellars sea cows survival, is an enormeous animals. Compare that to a thylacine that is a small animal with a wide historical range, which can be easier to assume to be elusive in (If it’s still alive). Yet again, the oceans itself are a mysterious place as well. But for a huge animal that required a lot of things to survive on, which led to its downfall. chances seem lower. BUT, Im still giving my hopes, if you are planning to find it that is. Not everything is impossible

I think living in a cold remote region is huge for its possible existence. Living in cold remote areas, is a really good way for animals to avoid humans. Additionally 250 years is a relatively short amount of time so it is possible that a few could still be around.

I really hope these videos bring awareness enough to spark a community effort to conserve these animals and see if they are alive. This would spark so much hope and joy both for the animals and the world as well

Great Video Forrest Galante. I totally think Stellar’s sea cow, like the Thylacine is still alive. The Thylacine is very intriguing as I am an Australian. I really love, the tank with the turtles in the background. You sure love turtles like I do. It was your intriguing documentary about finding Fern that sparked my interest in Testudines!! PS: I am a 13 your old who has always had a passion for animals. I could say too I am an animal magnet. My favourite animals, are cats (which I have 3 of), wombats, turtles and rhinos. Though it would be awesome to go on any adventure with you. Though I am probably too young, inexperienced and unlikely to be picked, for a sailing trip to look for carp, I believe it would be a most satisfying adventure, if I was picked. If you ever do an all payed trip to Kenya (too see the last Northern White Rhinos), or the Galapagos, I would be 100% be the first in the boat no matter my age or criteria. It would be great to meet you someday.

As a single mom for the last 15 years there are a lot of things I have on my "hope to do someday" list. I grew up exploring the hard to reach places in North America with my Grandfather. Exploring new things + looking for very old things are at the very top of my list! Thank you so much for your content! My kids are almost grown now and so your channel helps bide my time till I can really get back out there! PS... I promise I'm not saying that my kids are holding me back, but despite my very best efforts they don't share my love of everything wild and would probably choose ANYTHING else over going somewhere that might not have WiFi 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have a lifelong fascination with the seacow....I've even carved on in fossil walrus ivory from Savunga...and having worked in remote regions before (Alaska and Antarctica, but not the Aleutians) I can readily accept that a large animal could be overlooked or evade detection into modern times. We just don't know as much as we think, and those regions are simply so big it's hard to wrap our brains around it even when one works there for extended periods of time. Thanks for your work and enthusiasm. Incidentally I now live not too far from where the flying carp are found...let me know and I'll tell you a couple of good stories I have regarding sightings of rare beasties doing things that defy our expectations. Cheerio!

I have a passion for extinct animals especially ones that were ridiculed and destroyed by man. The stellar sea cow is one of the last megafauna of the ice age to have gone extinct because of man, and it's rediscovery would be absolutely incredible in my eyes! Especially the thylacine as well I'm sitting here praying that they are still out there, you have given much hope to those of us that actually care about the status and repopulation of these amazing extinct (or possibly endangered) animals. ♥️
