Not sure whether this really makes sense for canon, the r8 is already great and with discount for about 1300,- available. Not sure who would need a cheaper pure foto centric, spect down version of that. But let’s see and wait, they also came out with an R100. Let’s hope it’s not going to be that bad

The Canon R8 is the RP successor. Therefore the smartest move is for Canon to do a FF Nikon type ZF model.

Honestly I don’t think it would even sell well. There are so many full frame barely used cameras on eBay for a few hundred dollars. If Canon wants to pull more into interchangeable lens cameras they would be better off focusing on making a more affordable crop sensor for the masses.

Will Canon be able to make a sub-$1000 full frame camera? I kind of doubt it. Besides, as soon as you put a piece of RF glass on it the price jumps to over $2000. I think the "entry level" bar has crept up into the range where you either "buy once, cry once", or you stick with used gear and get some slightly older tech with a few good features instead of some crippled new gear. At least, that's how I would look at it.

I don't know what this may be or even if another camera is coming. I surely do hope it is an EOS R7ii. Given the newer deal with Tamron and Sigma to market ASP-c lenses, this could be a crop sensor camera and I hope it is a pro type ASP-c. I'm an R7 shooter and really like the camera body. It has some quirks but all camera bodies have their own quirks. I would be clicking one of Simon's "Pre Order Links" at the moment the R7ii is announced. In fact, I'm ordering 2, one for me and one for my wife.

The Canon RP or the Nikon Z5, both are great cameras still selling and never upgraded. It’s like neither will move forward until the other makes the move.

I have Z5 and I'm perfectly happy with it. I shoot mostly in studio so I don't need high speed burst modes, video is pretty solid for beginners. Sensor is excellent, colors are absolutely stunning. For a photo-centric enthusiast I need nothing more. And I believe most RP/R users feel similar. Canon needs a compact body more than anything else.

The Nikon Z5 is $1296 and is often on sale for $999 - it is a much better camera than the Canon RF and was also released a long time ago in 2020. If both cameras have equal advancements from their MK 1 version then the Z5II will smoke an R9 and probably only be $200 more. -PD

OMG, don't even go there... Digic 8... the RP and R were so underpowered with it. Rolling shutter was terrible. Put the same image processor in all cameras, just dial it back in software. I hope they learned their lesson from the R100...

I am excited about the R9 since I'm planning on selling my R10 to upgrade to full frame, butttt what else do they want strip out from the already great and affordable r8, only to strip out the 4k 60 full frame? maybe new lower res sensor? (highly doubt it) lose the evf? hm probably, or maybe fixed screen like the R100, ehh I don't know😂, I'm still interested in the r8 though😆

They still sell the EOS RP in Best buy and with no price drops. I think it'll hopefully most likely be the EOS R model that was discontinued. We need a solid 30 mp range camera with similar R6 style layout of features like ibis, dual cards, thumbstick and keeping the digital top display like the R and R5.

The R100 was after all the M50 II, but with some capabilities taken away - even had the Digic 8.

My thoughts is that the R9 could be a R6M1 sensor without IBIS with RP Body, or maybe a r7 sensor without IBIS with RP body

I don't know, it's hard for me to see a more stripped down R8 which I already see as an RP successor. An R7ii I think is slightly more likely when you consider the release dates between the R7 and 90D is a little less than 3 years. A late 2024 annoucement, with a mid 2025 release date, of an R7ii isn't too far-fetched. That could leave the R9 as a retro camera with more computational features.

They can do what they used to do, limit frames per second, limit video resolution and refresh rates. Give it just enough capabilities to make it a great entry level FF camera. No zebras, single card slot....

But the RP wasn't a stripped down R, it was a FF version of an M50 with a different body. I remembered thinking of upgrading to the RP when I had my M50, similar specs with the exact same crippled features, in full frame.

The R50 doesn't feel like it got the cripple hammer from the R10. It feels like it was purpose built. If they did the same with the R8 and said, okay, it can't be better than the R8, must sell for $999, let's limit fps to X, and buffer to X, but lets add computational capabilities pros won't want, but amateurs will love. Give it a purpose and I think it could do very well. The main market will be for photographers, but offer decent 4K video, other over 30 fps. Instead of the traditional, fewer features than the one above but more than the one below - build it for a customer segment that will love it.

Good point about India, and other rising countries. This R9 could be made with existing parts, but using lessons learned to reduce production cost. It could be a lot like the R100. It could also be a retro styled camera. In either case a crop sensor will be a mistake. Still want an r7 mii😢

There is the problem... the RP had a 26mp sensor... Canon is likely to stick a 24mp sensor in it instead.

Many smart phones cost about $1000! If Canon is planning to release a full frame camera in that price range, it needs to offer compelling features that would entice customers to spend additional money for a dedicated interchangeable lens camera. If it offers a dumbed-down AF system it will not sell!

That's the problem, or opportunity. Make a camera for photographers & videographers and do what smartphones can't do. Give people a reason to want to get one. Take the R8 and reduce the fps, but keep the digic X, and do some other things - focus on what made the RP great value, just make it a little better.

why not just make a R equivalent instead? the R8 is made in the same body as the rp, if they make the r9 a rp follow up i would be really disappointed. the rp could have a firmware update and still be rellevant un the line up because the r8 is made in the same body. we need a REAL semi-pro camera not another entry level
