I have to say, after so many rants and negativities around EOS RP, you guys have done a fantastic job in giving non biased review. Thumbs up. A simplified Z6 with same sensor, crippled video specs, less weather sealing and a bit slower frame rate at high speed continuous, hopefully same battery, 24-70s combo for under $2000 and $1400 for the body alone.

Phones are going to kill the low end market. Whatever anecdotal shit the northrups say, end of the day the VAST majority of ex-compact camera users now use phones and dont give a shit about fullframe or knowing photography. With AI becoming more appearant in phone cameras software will simulate bokeh, as they are doing now. Consumers dont care once again. The high end and pro market will be where dedicated expensive cameras are going to live. I think the Northups VASTLY overestimate the desire for cheap cameras. They might hear it alot but then again they run a massive photography business. Ofcourse people who have interest flock to them and that makes their perspective incredibly skewed. Most people buying cheap Canon DSLR's put them on a shelf, never use them. I see soo many 2000D's with about 1000 clicks.No point to invest significantly into a system which people are not actually going to use. In comes the Canon 4000D. Their 6 year old 18mp sensor, PLASTIC lens mount, no flip screen etc. Sells like hotcakes to people who aren't going to use the thing, why on earth would Canon invest significantly in R&D for a FF system which people put on a shelf. @Ziggi Mon

Wondering why there was so much hate about the EOS RP at all. Probably the price was questionable at release, but considering now 2021, soon 2022... I was looking for my first FF i waited for a long time already. Little used (SO 2ND HAND!!!)similar performing ones like the 6D Mk2 cost as much as the RP (brandnew...) or even more like the 5D Mk3/4 and are a lot bulkier. Ofc i wont get the display at the top as i wished since ever with the RP, but somehow when you want the more modern sensor with its pretty good high ISO capabilities, you can go for 2nd hand "higher end" DSLRs or a new mirrorless RP, not really a hard decision. I hope the fact its mirrorless will make it even lasting longer than a DSLR.

Thank you for an excellent review. I just received my RP yesterday. I tried just just about all my lenses on this camera. They all worked fine including the 2 EF-S lenses I use on my 80D. The only problem I had was with my Sigma 50mm 1.4. It showed circles in the images I took. Today I will try this lens again turning off all lens corrections and hopefully those circles disappear. I read that the R had this same problem and turning off the pherifical on third party lenses solved it. Putting it another way I will upgrade to a few of the RF lenses but I am in no hurry. I know this camera has warts but they are warts I am willing to live with. Every camera has. There is no holy grail system out there. Full frame goodness in a light weight camera with excellent ergonomics for $1299.00 that can use existing glass with great results was just the ticket for me on my fixed income. I just turned 65 years young today with my first film camera being a MInolta X7. I've been around awhile. I am not sure who the marketing of this camera is for but it certainly ticked all my boxes and I have bought it. While everyone else out there is searching for their holy grail I will be happily out working my craft. Keep on keeping on!!!!!!!

John Blomeling Yeah, good thinking! Many people are obsessed with specs but actually, this camera is awesome. Canon’s ergonomics, touch interface is pretty much the best in my opinion and it’s more important over time than some of the missing specs, and using EF lenses natively is a killer feature. Long time EOS M user here. Had a combination of an M3 and M6 and was shooting with both. At some point, the M3 just died on me and at first I was looking to replace it with an M50 II, but then I saw on the vendor's website that a brand new RP including the RF 50mm 1.8 lens was only about 900$, which somewhat stunned me. Full-frame with a great prime lens for noticeably less than a grand and no need to change my battery packs? Almost sounded too good to be true, but I took a leap of faith and ordered it. Best decision ever! The camera and lens work really well together and even wide open, I get perfectly sharp and detailed pictures combined with a quick autofocus. The eye-tracking feature is also absolutely massive for me as a portrait photographer and although it isn't always perfectly on point, it still focuses on people much better than my M6 with a 32mm 1.4 ever did. Not to mention the superb low-light performance, especially when you switch from an APS-C to a full-frame. All in all, this is the best camera to buy in terms of price-to-performance ratio and if you want to transit from APS-C to full-frame over time. I am in love with mine and cannot wait to see where this full-frame journey takes me. Thank you for a great review.

@4:21 I like how DP Review has put up D750 and A7II as a comparison of ISO performance. I mean D750 and A7ii were released back in 2014 but somehow D750 still performs much better than either of Canon's full frame mirrorless cameras.
@cooloox5 жыл бұрын
Actually, it wasn't much better at all. The EOS RP had larger grain, the D750 had more grain. So do you prefer tightly packed small grain or more spaced out larger grain? I'd say the D750 had a slight edge.

I was surprised just how bad that iso performance was. It was not slightly worse it was massively worse. I’d expect to have seen an improvement over older tech. Canon obviously cost cutting, probably because they can, bet they will sell loads of them
@TL-xw6fh5 жыл бұрын
The reason may be because the D750 sensor is ISO invariant, whereas the Canon sensors are not ISO invariant, hence their very poor low light performance.
@cooloox5 жыл бұрын
@@shrubmonkey OK, you keep telling yourself that. I was watching on a 50" screen and the difference was not massive. Also, regardless of when the D750 was released, it's still the "current" model in that price range.
@wasabibinladeen625 жыл бұрын
@@cooloox D750 is $1000 cheaper than Canon EOS R. Sony A7III is $250 cheaper. The ISO performance is bad on both R and RP. You need to keep in mind that when Sony released their entry level A7III, they didn't cripple its iso performance, FPS, autofocus (actually improved), video, battery, build quality, etc. compared to A7RIII despite costing over $1000 less. They did lower the EVF and LCD screen resolution but it was not a big deal for most people and helped Sony to overtake Full frame market over Nikon and Canon. On the flipside, We got Canon releasing pretty mediocre camera and crippling it down further back to five years ago to protect its "flagship" lineup. Dynamic range performance is pretty horrible for the price range as well even compared to their own APS-C models. Canon thinks their fans are just gonna keep buying into their system as long as they put their Canon logo on it. Also going for RP might just be one of the worst choices for the mirrorlesss market since there are like two entry-level RF mount lenses available. Honestly, Fuji's XT-3 will get you significantly better results unless you are shooting in extreme low light.

I love seeing you guys work and do your stuff....balanced, honest, and pull no punches review....I own the canon ae1, for memories only. The t5i, still going strong with the wife. And finally, i own the xt2. It's so disappointing when canon constantly pulls features for purposes of market targeting for their perceived and specific customer base. Which appears to be dwindling per their own ceo's admission. However, what great hooks they have in their products. dpaf, canon color, touchy flippy screen, great menu system, awesome L glass, durable bodies ( even the plastic ones ). When you examine their marketing logic it makes perfect sense. Provide the basics, plant the hook in new fish, and, theoretically of course, you have a customer for life. It's great when it works. At the same time, as photographers improves their skill set, individuals begin to want more. And this is where canon begins to fall flat. The problem is, this is also the smallest target audience, pro-sumers, and professionals begin to dwindle in numbers. Canon caters to beginners, mid-range, and eventually the pros. Don't get me wrong, canon has great pro equipment, but it always appears as of late to be lagging behind the competition in improved features. Even their beginner products are showing this. Although I will never know the thinking of the inner sanctum of canon, it does leave us, the former canon hopeful, formulating our own conspiracy theories. As always, keep up the good work and keep em flying.... Now where did i park that saucer...hmmmm.

Sure, but I wonder how many 5DII owners still haven't upgraded. Also, lots of them are at least part-time pros, which means they prefer bodies with better build quality, more direct controls, longer battery life and dual slots. - "Those who want to save bodies for lens. RF-L is expensive." I could agree, but the body is too underpowered to make a reasonable case for the high-end RF lenses. - "Those who can't afford a good full-frame." Get a 5DII, or D610, or K-1, or A99, or A7RII, and call it a day. Any of those is a more credible photography platform than the RP. - "Those who only cares with portarits and just a simpler video." That's a... weird niche. Especially when an X-T30 with the 56mm f/1.2 can it eat it for breakfast, and for less money. The 56mm is basically one of the greatest portrait lenses ever made, and the X-T30 is soooo much better in video that it's shameful. - "For Canon, they just testing the market. That's why they have no pro bodies yet." That is true, but just how long can they afford to "test" things? To me, they're only testing their faithful's patience, which isn't good. "Canon obviously tries to cover the entire market. From the Cheapest to the most Expensive." They have done this thus far, no doubt. But for how long can that last? The market is still collapsing, and companies need to be more focused and efficient with their expenditures than ever before. Canon's current "let's try everything and see what sticks" is coming five years too late. Sony already did it, and managed to catch the drift just in time.

Quick comment on the "dynamic range issue" with the Canon RP, while the camera definitely does NOT have the ability to do the awesome ISO invariant kinda tweaking of some of my other bodies (Nikon D810, Fujifilm X-T3, etc, etc, etc)...it can still capture a very solid amount of dynamic range in a single image and it's not hurting me I just have to (as usual) know what I'm doing and prioritize what's most important in the photo like I would for the others so I'm not always shooting to push shadows by 3-5 stops. Also if you're shooting landscape work then it's not a problem at all to just shoot bracketed exposures which the RP does just fine haha. (also it has Focus bracketing which is pretty cool though I haven't spent real time with it just yet) The current sale price had me totally rethink whether or not I'd ever try one out, and I just received it this past weekend for $999 with the kit lens (that I'll sell immediately off as soon as I know the camera won't have a problems in the 30 day return window) even though I'll not use that lens for more than making sure the camera works properly then I put it back in the box as I don't like it much. Selling that lens off makes the already body only deal of $899 even more insane at about $780...it's a crazy deal. I took it out into the field for the first time this weekend to run it through it's paces, and after setting the camera up for portrait work the night before...I almost completely forgot that it was a new camera I was using at all. The results were excellent, and the camera performed very very well the entire day of shooting. I shot roughly 712 photos (incl. bursts) and went through 1.5 batteries though I purchased and charge enough to have 4 batteries if needed. Other than wishing I had a better eyecup on this thing (looking for a replacement), I gotta say that I'm very very happy with it's performance. I used the Canon 100mm f/2, Tamron 45mm f/1.8, Canon RF 35mm, and the Canon 24-105mm STM this weekend all without problems. It was sooooooo nice being to use the 100mm f/2 without a thought to the autofocus because the EyeAF worked amazingly(!) well enough that I didn't have to move the focus point ONCE during the entire day. My other cameras are a lot faster (well the Fuji bodies and older Nikon bodies anyway...not the D810 by that much) and yes the RAW files are better to dramatically underexpose with, but this little RP is earning it's keep it seems. I think it just might be time to decide to just keep the thing and sell that kit lens early so I can't back out haha. I expected a train wreck of a camera and to send it back within 2 or 3 days, but that was not what happened at all.

I fit the picture as target customer for the RP: Amateur, had a 6D before and some 2.8 EF zoom lenses from Tamron. Why I switched? Because the RP is way easier to operate than any other full frame camera I know. I finally kicked the automatic modes and shoot in manual only. The two dials make it possible to change aperture and exposure while looking through the EVF. The touchscreen is flipped out and with my left thumb I move the focus points around at the same time. THAT's the real advantage of the RP compared to other cameras (and the 6D). On a down side: The missing weather sealing might be an issue, since I travel a lot. That's going to be a risk. The dynamic range didn't prove to be a major issue so far, bringing out shadows in raw files turned out more than decent and not worse, than with the 6D. One warning though: If you're using 3rd party EF lenses with the adapter, test the compatibility first. I had an older Tamron 70-200 F2.8 where the autofocus didn't work. With newer glass, no issue though.

I'm always skeptical about Canon reviews on release. Seems they get a lot of hate but then down the road, once people have time to use them and work with their quirks, they become a pretty solid option. I have a M50 and 6D2 that I love, not that I love everything about them and it took time to find their sweet spots, but given I use multiple cameras for a variety of uses "price point" cameras are my new reality.

I'm considering the RP or the M50. How does your m50 compare to 6d2? I've had Canon m6mii and currently own Lumix S5 but find it too heavy and too complex for my abilities. I mostly shoot in auto and only jpegs. I only do street and casual photography but want something better than a smart phone or point and shoot.

I don’t know why but in comment section, lots of people are saying A7ii is better than RP... I’ve had my hand on both of them, Sony has better sensor, but everything else, rp is better... especially the ease of use for RP. You want to pick it up and shoot... the Sony doesn’t have a touch screen, difficult to change setting, doesn’t feel good in hand.... I really don’t mind losing one stop of dynamic range for exchange of ease of use.

Depends on your expectations, and what you're used to. For me, the four dials and full customization on the Sony are preferable to the Canon's simplified interface. The Sony also has IBIS, picture profiles, apps to expand the camera's performance, a battery grip option, many more lenses available to it, better/faster burst shooting... It's hardly as one-dimensional as you make it sound.

Finally a review of this camera in actual low indoor light situations. I have watched so many reviews looking for low light mentions, and they're all done outside. I'll be shooting inside mostly, at night, in places similar to what you shot the video in, except not even that much light. More like a civic center with vast ceilings and walls to far away to bounce light off of. Also thank you so much for demonstrating the noise in the shadows. I'm using a 7D MKII with the kit 18-135 lens, and the shadow noise is awful. I was hoping by getting this RP body + the 24-105mm lens kit that it would be a big step up (going from crop sensor to full frame and much much better glass). Any thoughts on that as an actual good upgrade? The fps doesn't make much difference to me except for battery life. I had considered the 6D MKII as well, but thought that mirrorless is the future and wanted to stay on track at least, plus I'm hearing rumblings that Canon may be done with 6D line at the Mk II. I'm going to look and see if you have a review on the 6D MKII as well.

And I could use the same glass on both bodies; amazing thought !

Recently I went to a pro-camera store. I came for different gear but we ended up talking and trying out the EOS R(not the RP). What came out for me as a surprise is that instead of to trying to keep enough highlight details so you can push up the shadows as most normally do, you best metering on the shadows and take DOWN the Highlights! The other way around! Don't know how and what but it worked! You can take down the highlights of the EOS-R by a large amount! At the store they believe Canon should had that in their marketing! So most reviewers are talking about too much shadow noise in their test now. So instead of normal to under exposure a bit the EOS-R seems to do better with slightly overexposure it seems. Worth to try out!

03:40 Is there still that rumor that a closed shutter prevents any dust on the sensor? It will not, and I guess that Canon knows that now as well :)… Because just think: any dust will now land on the shutter. Once that opens, just guess where it will immediatly land: on the electically charged sensor… So it only adds a Risk of a broken shutter and add one shutter actuation, but no dust protection at all.
@dzsemx5 жыл бұрын
In front of the sensor there are 2-3 layers of glass. Literally you can damage it with a hammer or a rock. The shutter is a flexible plastic curtain, you can not break it by touching it, but it can break if you punch your finger to it.
@Ildskalli5 жыл бұрын
What the hell? You have that completely backwards - the glass stack in front of the sensor is really tough, and at most will get scratched by a very hard shard being pressed against it, in which case you're doing something *wrong* . On the other hand, the shutter is made of extremely thin titanium or carbon fiber blades that are moved at ridiculously fast speeds - anything that gets in there has a serious chance of doing serious damage.
@gavinwade3495 жыл бұрын
@@Ildskalli The glass in front of the sensor can be scratched extremely easily. If your stupid enough to try to clean it with even a microfiber cloth you can get it covered in scratches with a few swipes (I know from my own personal experience). As a beginner casual/travel 📷 taker, I don't see why I would get this over the 80d which can be had new for under $750. After doing lots of research and waiting for this to come out, I decided to go with the 80D. I can get a few Canon primes and zooms plus the body for $1299.
@patrickfitzgerald28615 жыл бұрын
As a 60D owner, I won't criticize your decision, but they are VERY different cameras. The EOS RP is smaller and lighter, and with a decent range zoom lens would make an excellent single lens travel option, particularly in low light situations. The 80D is built like a tank and is a proven winner, but the future belongs to mirrorless cameras, for reasons too numerous to list here. Of course, only you can decide if it's worth the extra expense.

Come back to this comment in about a year. They are going to sell a hell of a lot of these and they will force the competition to lower prices. Premium APS-C for them and others is gone. They will still offer them, but its a formality. Sony has touted their Full Frame share lead. They will have to follow or lose the no. 1 spot in FF share. This is great for consumers. Its a race to the bottom in price. Performance sacrifices are negligible for the price. Finally the winning ticket here is all the EF glass out there from all manufacturers that can be adapted for little $. Lets come back in 12 months and we will see.
@thenexthobby4 жыл бұрын
I'm a fan of EF lenses but disagree premium APS-C cameras will go away. What premium APS-C cameras offer is better video _for a given cost_ and every single reviewer will rightly mention where something like the RP doesn't compete there. The trouble with reviews such as this one is that they ignore the hidden comparison they're making to APS-C cameras that don't have to include a larger sensor. How much does anyone think a full frame Fuji might cost? And one that has all the video specs we "expect" of a modern Fuji camera? A "little more" than an X-T30, or even an X-T3? What about the X-T4? Unlikely. The question is, who gives a shit about video when what you might want to do is go out take kick ass photos instead? And you want something that offers whatever advantages full frame might offer, in a body that lets you easily select from multiple AF points spread out on the screen? All of a sudden the choices rapidly slim down to this RP or a used pro model DSLR. Anyone: Am I wrong?

Greetings from good old Europe. Fair and interesting review like always!!I Bught a Canon RP. Why? I had Sony a7iii. Very good picture quality. Bad handling: some mistakes and complicated menue - for me, it always took a little bit long at shooting changes. So I sold it and took the RP: yes, Sony is technical better (sensor), has greater dynamic range, is faster and so on...GOLDSTANDARD. But the RP has better handling, ergonomics and is more sympathic to me: full variangle Touchdisplay, Drag&Drop Autofocus, double Exposure, logical menue for example. For the price you get a FF + lens. It´s good enough for me - I shoot stills, video not often (FHD Dualautofocus). RP = S I M P L I C I T Y. Less can be more. Need not the best of the best. Canon democratizes Fullframe for the people. Not evryone is a millionaire or professional photographer or Pixelpeeper. Think the RP will have a tremendous success like the Canon M50/Kiss. I´m really no fanboy of Canon - had used all companys before - but I love this new RP. KR, Chris

That was another good and fair review from you guys. There's only one slight problem: you actually made the camera look better than what you described it as being. Jordan made it look good for video, even in 4K and Chris made it look like a solid low-light camera. It performed very well in this video. Did Jordan manually focus in the 4K part? One other minor thing, I think it's meaningless even mentioning CIPA battery ratings. They are so far off the mark for virtually every camera that it's a joke. I bought an M50 specifically for street photography and it's rated at 235 shots per charge. I consistently get around 1600+shots and 1800+ if doing a lot of bursts. The lowest I ever got was still over 1,000 shots, so who knows where 235 is coming from.

The RP is only described in terms of how “bad” it is or isn’t. No reviewer has ever given it an u qualified “good” opinion. Only 10 years ago, you wouldn’t have had.many options. So maybe you’d be looking for the “least bad” camera...but in 2019 you have so many truly good options from Fuji, Sony, Panasonic and Olympus. The X-T30 with a couple great lenses is the same price as the RP, and it’s excellent is every place the RP falls on its face. A Sony a7II is also a much better camera. A Panasonic G9 is the same price or less, and it runs circles around the RP, even with an MFT sensor. Why are people so addicted o the Canon brand after almost a decade of letdowns? Was it the Agassi Rebel ad campaign that sealed the deal for eternity? 😂

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is amazing as well and it is tremendous how much lighter it is compared to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8. For a thousand more bucks, the IBIS, continuous shooting, eye tracking, video capabilities, etc, were worth it for me. Good review and helpful. I know you have good professional integrity and this is a good example of doing a good review which is to sit with the potential buyer of the product and quickly take them through all the major points they would come up against if they could afford to do the same. As you know your genre of professional reviewers is littered with examples of compromised individuals who go easy on these cameras because they are being wined and dined by canon Sony Nikon at some beautiful location and its subtle but the influence of such a relationship is one i hold very near the surface when watching you two review things and this is a good example of holding a new product to task and i appreciate it. I want sony to give me new cameras to play with every time they release something, but since they dont and they give them to you all i am grateful when the videos are not just about how cool it is to get free stuff and look at this cool feature. This one was about how does this stack up in relation to the other options at that price point overall for people like myself where it is a huge deal to commit one way or the other because money is tight so to buy one thing is to lose access to another, that’s opportunity cost and where you two are one of the better reviewers especially Jordan has the curmudgeon thing down so i always know he will speak truth to power as it were. So really this is me seeing what i think is one of your better videos critically and encourage you to take that moment before each review as a team and just remember how subtle is the creep of sunny tropical locations (or even the subtle creep of free gear in the frozen tundras of canada or wherever you all are from - i dont know i am from the United States so the only way we learn geography is if we happen to invade a country) and you certainly gain my loyalty when you are willing to give an in-depth and balanced view as well as being able to step back and compare it to the Panasonic etc. .
