The Harley-Davidson Low Rider ST is one of the most popular cruiser motorcycles to be released in 2022. And for good reason. This "Sport Touring" motorcycle has tons of features that are great for all sorts of motorcycling. But is it going to be my new Touring bike? Or does the Road Glide Special still sound like a better choice for me? Today I get to test ride this new Softail and give y'all a quick review of my initial thoughts.

This bike has really grew on me since it first came out. I’m not a fan of big fairings, so this bike just didn’t appeal much to me. You look great on that bike. You seem to handle it very well. The only thing I think the RGS offers over the ST is the Boom Audio. Thanks for the great review! I definitely think the two different size bags are weird but understand the issue with the exhaust. I would hope there would be a matching option if a shorter exhaust was fitted. On the other hand, I've never ridden a harley but the Roadglide ST has my eyes from the ST models. However, the Low Rider ST looks way more flickable for the twisties....guess I need to win the 1 billion dollar mega millions so I can just buy both as well as a Pan Am. LOL!

Im a roadster guy but don't drive a Harley. Its a nice looking bike, and reminds me more of a roadster than a touring beast. And it looks like it goes well with you - What's new about bikes I have a lot to learn as mine is vintage, where focus is mostly how to keep it running, and not "lets go on a great trip " which looks like you can do with your new bike - Congrats ! btw: as far as Audio , I'm impressed - mine is earbuds at best, if the engine is not revving - and as far as wind goes, wow , not to start feeling a wall of wind at 70+ mph, deserves another wow !

@@ridetofood Although having never driven one, I do like the dramatic lines on the large touring bikes like the Road Glide. My dearest is a true saint to ride with me on my beloved roadster, and if on long trips, Id probably welcome a larger rig, but not sure if 'Beauty' would get jealous if I did. In any event, those lines in your video look nice ( try a silhouette of you as pilot and bike - aesthetically well balanced - )

8:13 I just finished a 4,000 mile trip on the Low Rider ST. Took it down Skyline Dr, the Shenandoah, Blue Ridge Parkway, and through Deals Gap. I'm 6'1", equipped it with audio and the 10" windshield. It is 110% a touring machine and, in locations like the ones I just mentioned, is highly preferable over a touring chassis motorcycle. To your point regarding luggage, I used a Saddlemen S3500 bag and that was plenty of room for a week+ of riding. Without question, the biggest drawback I've found after that many miles is the handlebar configuration. I have to constantly reach for them, and I have long arms. I notice you reaching for them in your video as well. While it's not uncomfortable for short stints, after hours of riding and hundreds of miles, it becomes very noticeable and uncomfortable. It strains the back and shoulders significantly. Risers/bars will be the next mod to my bike.
@ridetofood
@ridetofood 2 жыл бұрын
No matter what bike I ride (even my own Dyna that has pullbacks) I will always be reaching for the handlebars. 😂 Thanks for the input on your personal vehicle! Looks like you know where to modify it for your liking if you intended to tour often! 😊
@Hawgryder
@Hawgryder 2 жыл бұрын
What makes it highly preferable over a touring chassis? I went from the smallest ie Sportster to a Road Glide Special. It can run the corners just as well as my Sportster did. Harley has many different models for different purposes. Modern day touring from the MOCO cost about 30k before upgrades my 15 was 21k. Most people don’t have that much expendable income. This bike isn’t a tourer its a commuter ie one level above bar hopper. You can tour on a Sportster with aftermarket shocks, bags. Doable yes, comfortable hell no. That’s personal experience 😂
@grayghost1423
@grayghost1423 Жыл бұрын
@K Heck I just bought one. But I have a Streetglide ST also for touring. I'll see if this can make the haul before I get rid of the Streetglide. But it is far from a bar hopper.😊

@@Hawgryder 4.5" of rear travel suspension in a monoshock, vs 2.5" on a Road Glide or Street Glde. As an old man with lower back trouble, a good rear seat and the extra travel in the rear suspension makes a big difference. My Sport Glide is a 700# bike with bags, not close to or more than 900#. Previous owner of my Sport Glide went from L.A to Tennessee, rode around the area for a week with friends in the area, then back to Sturgis, then home. That was 2018. 2019 he rode to Sturgis then all around WY, MT, ID then home again. That was 10,500 long distance miles on his Sport Glide and he's 6' 4" tall. It was doable, for him, in 15 months.

You can get almost all of the qualities of the ST's with the bags, inverted forks, and a few mods with a used 2018-2021 Sport Glide, for a lot less money. Get the 56mm rear shock, and the fairing of your choice, a good seat and 4 to 6" risers. You can find many of these low mileage at a significant discount, if you don't want to pay the HD tax for new. I've always wondered what big discounts content creators get from HD headquarters, when buying,

A slightly taller riser to get you a bit more upright and a taller windshield and some pipe and you’d be pretty set, otherwise the stock bar/riser shape looks good. That’s my thoughts on it. With so many riders with music in their helmets, it’s worth cheapening out in audio on the bike and just getting it setup for the long and fast miles we all like to put down(what I would do). 117ci with an aftermarket cam is a lot of reliable motor for essentially an off the shelf bike… It’s bike like this(vs a street/road glide) that make me glad I’m short, more money in my pocket for a well rounded bike. I actually really like this bike, just like older Harley stuff more. With the scene being the way it is today, it’s best if Harley gets on with making those lower fairings to add because if they don’t someone else will be.

Nice review! The “big” Harley touring bikes are kinda cramped for me so no way would I fit on the ST. I can see where it would be great for someone a bit smaller though. Harley needs to offer some better paint choices on a sporty bike like that. Black or grey isn’t much of a choice… I personally think your current Dyna is a much better looking bike!

I have had two Harley Davidson bikes in my day which was a 96 motor full dresser and a current 2017 M8 street glide. My over the road bike is my Honda Gold wing because it’s liquid cooled and maintenance is nothing more than a single hole oil change for everything like a car. My street glide M8 is a still a hot air cooled pushrod engine that’s overly labor intensive but it’s American and has Harley Davidson on the tank. HD needs to move to full liquid cooling, ride modes and full counter balancing or I am upgrading to a new Honda Gold Wing up from my 2006 Honda Goldwing because HD maintenance is ridiculous.

I ride a 2015 RGS stock everything except the hammock seat. At six foot one 280 I wish the seat height was 4-5 inches higher. More suspension height more comfort. For me nothing about this new bike outshines the tourer. Not being able to control all my electronics with thumb switches is a deal breaker. Unfortunately the new RGS cost about 10k more if you can even find one than my 15 new. This just reminds me of all the money I wasted on previous Harleys trying to make it into a bagger. I think the MOCO should focus on comfort before new releases. This reminds me of the previous DYNA sport tourer ie Switchback which was a complete flop but better looking.

Not that bad for front fork. I had the same 43mm seal on inverted fork start weeping on my 2018 Sport Glide.... 2 hours at $120/hr at local HD dealership, and a $40 seal kit and a qt of 10 wt fork oil. About $300 to redo one leg. Does require special tools.

The external speakers are pretty awesome, but listening to an audiobook or podcast in traffic can get embarrassing. 😂 As for the asymmetrical bags, it wasn’t until I saw one in the showroom, that I even realized they weren’t matched. In other words, it really doesn’t seem like a big deal.

Did the fairing give you a lot more wind protection than your Dyna's windshield? I am your size but with shorter legs (29: inseam). I find that my legs touch all of the hot parts when flat-footed. I'm disappointed that Harley raised the height over the previous iteration of the low rider. Did you find it hard to back up in difficult situations?
@ridetofood
@ridetofood Жыл бұрын
No the stock windshield is significantly shorter it really isn’t a fair comparison as they’re also very different windshields as a whole. Im not flat footed on most bikes so I’ve learned to not put myself I situations I can’t get myself out of.

For around town, definitely! Long hauls will require a bit of comfort accessories, though. Mostly for the passenger if I had to guess. (I don’t usually ride as a passenger so it’s hard to give accurate insight on that part) If you’re mostly riding around town or less than 250 miles a day together I think you’ll be fine :)
