As a disclaimer, I say this as someone who loves small displacement bikes. It bears understanding that touring in North America is wildly unlike South America. In North America you need to expect (even if you're going out of your way to hit winding roads when they're an option) literally hundreds of miles of open straight highway, where you're literally not turning for hours at a time. A 250 is miserable in such circumstances. If you can't do 85-90mph for hours at a time, that becomes *extremely* tedious.
@Someone-bf8ru
@Someone-bf8ru Жыл бұрын
@@Wintersdark Try touring the south of Argentina, you will find thousands upon thousands of kilometers of roads that wouldn't be too different from what you are describing. To be clear, though, people would choose something like an HD Pan America over these smaller bikes if they could, of course. Since the economy over here is in the toilet, they would need five lifetimes to afford it, so they cannot choose the better bikes. Anyway, what I am getting at is that any cruiser bike over 500cc is plenty capable of some hardcore touring, so the debate between a huge bike and a not so huge but still pretty big bike is somewhat pointless from my perspective. Ride safe! 🏍️

Here in North America, you will need minimum a 1000cc to keep up with highway traffic…an you will do about 500 miles per day on average.

Exactly. In that sense Harleys are the stereotypical anti-tourer. Expensive, heavy, thirsty, prestigeous. The perfect machine to ride to the next Starbucks on Sumdays (when the weather is 75-78F) and show off on the parking lot while sipping a double decaf macciato, Bro!

I'm curious how you would compare this to the Pan America on the same ride? By the by, I really appreciate that you use the "have credit card, let's travel" packing style. So many channels make like you need to pack for crossing the Gobi desert anytime you want to go out for a weekend!

I never understood that either. "I NEED ALL THE SPACE OF ALL THE BAGS!". No, you don't. I carry all I need for even a week long trip in one waterproof duffle strapped to the sissybar on the back seat: a pair of shoes, toiletries (including a set of clippers), all the clothes. And there's still room to spare, I could also throw in half the medicine cabinet (if I had one) and a jacket. A duffle bag also has more usable space than any saddle bag or tour pack. There's so many things you can't put in either because of the shape, or ways you have to jimmy stuff around to make it all fit. Even then, I don't understand what you could possibly need on a road trip other than your clothes, toiletries and medicines. You don't need to being the whole house and 50 pairs of shoes. -_-
@Wintersdark

Yep. It doesnt need to be something that costs a lot either. I regularly do 5 day/4 night trips with just a midsized tail bag. 2 pairs of jeans and 2 shirts, daily underwear and socks, hygiene stuff. Generally the pants and t-shirts can handle two days, but if not, stop and do laundry midway through. Camping is obviously very different, but I've found most midrange hotels have laundry facilities or can point you to some. Obviously depending on potential weather things can change, and how far off the beaten path you're going. But my experience is the VAST majority of trips people take tend to take trips where you're stopping for the nights in civilization. So you're not planning on burning money as you travel, but you know if things go sideways, Mr. Credit Card can get you clothes or whatever. You really don't need to try and be prepared for anything.

Yeah, but it doesn't hurt to have a tire patch kit and air compressor as well as zip ties and a small and efficient tool kit. You'd be a hurting unit if you caught a nail in BFE Texas with no cell phone service. Unlike most other bike manufacturers, HD doesn't provide a rudimentary emergency tool kit with their bikes.

I love touring on my 1999 883 Sportster Harley. It doesn't make a lot of horsepower but it runs cool to up in Florida in August 200° in the oil tank and the bike doesn't make you to death riding down the road. When the orange blossoms are in bloom we have the sweetest smelling air on earth. I don't ride at night because of the wild pigs and the textures and the trunks Etc. All my trips are day trips on back roads I don't super slab it anywhere if I don't have to that is. My riding Buddies the chaplain of our post Riders chapter has the peanut tank so we stop every hundred miles for him to fuel up he has a smoke or take a piss on top of the tank I have a soda walk around stretch my legs and then we're good for another hundred miles down the road.

Heck, I toured all of Western Europe for 6 weeks on a 76 FLH, with leather bags and no screen. I toured the Western US on a Yamaha 400 a million years ago (bad idea, great ride) and have been coast to coast on a '72 Triumph 650 and '96 Triumph 900 Sprint (not touring bikes). It's down to: how much do you want to stop, what roads are you riding, what do you want to bring with you and how was the weather (last question asked post ride)? Get out there and ride.

Spite, great video (as always!) I’ve got my used ‘19 Deluxe and I enjoy the best of both worlds in touring and just riding around town. What have I done to make it a touring bike: * Saddlebags (on bike when bought.) * Sundowner seat (on bike as well.) * Windshield * Cruise Control Kit (Waited so long for this. So welcomed!) * Sissy Bar, luggage tail rack, and touring luggage. *Legend Suspension (in back.) When I am just riding around town, luggage comes off with the sissy bar and rack. But, when I ride to an overnight with the HOG group, my bike can go toe to toe with the Street/Road Glides. Thanks!

I had an 08 Low Rider that I commuted on for 85k miles. The main change the I HAD to do... was a windshield. The wind pressure pushing you back without it, is just too much for long distance riding. I went from the HD windshield (quick connect) to a Batwing Fairing for the looks and full coverage after a while. I would also upgrade the seat to a Saddleman with a backrest, if you plan on really putting on the miles. But I did do quite a few 250 mile days and didnt feel that bad at the end. On the other end though... I did get a Street Glide after the Low Rider... Its just way more comfortable for long distance.

I’ve ridden all the new softails that Harley offers and I loved all of them, some more than others but all felt so good with amazing power and giddy up and go for days. Of course you can. I have a 2021 FXLRS. I went to Terlingua Texas for the Run to Terlingua Run with the FXR Houston guys. I put on my saddle bag, strapped on my tent to my Edward Richie sissy bar and other essentials and let's go to West Texas. Took me a little over eight hours to get to Terlingua. Camped for the weekend and return to Austin. Two weeks later I went to Born Free Texas at the Yellow Rose Canyon Located in Mt. Enterprise, TX . So yes, definitely you can tour with a Softail. Yup, the wind was heavy going West, " so hold on to your potatoes ". A buddy from Houston had the new FXLRS-T and I could barely catch up to his 117 . We ware riding 90 to 100 mph on the way to Terlingua and back to Austin. Yes the speed limit is 40 mph in Big Ben, of course we were hauling ass. It's a long ride to Terlingua, but it's worth the ride, the twisties in Terlingua are fun to ride. Stay safe Bro, we should get together sometime here in Austin. I know a few Harley Bros here in Austin, most of us ride the new FXLRS .Cheers from Austin.

@Salty and Sprinkles I hope you do return to the brand. I am in know way anti HD. I own to many of them to take that stance. Also I'm not saying that they are not an improvement over previous softail generations. They are great improvment when comparing HD to HD. The monoshock design that they are using has poor geometry, and the shock itself is not very good quality. Which lends itself to inferior handling and poor ride quality. Especially when you compare it to other motorcycle manufacturers in that price point

@Salty and Sprinkles From what I have heard is that after market shocks is a massive improvement over stock. I weigh 235lbs and have the shock set to #1 postion, and it's somewhat comfortable. If i put it at 3 like HD recommends I might as well be riding a hard tail I do not regret buying the bike one bit it is blast to ride and the only reason I have not gone the new shock route is because after spending 22k on a bike spending 1k on a new shock is hard to swallow. Also, it's mainly used as an around town bike, and I have an Ultra for longer trips.

There was a need for cheap transportation after WW2. Most Americans couldn't afford much and you also had returning servicemen who didn't have any transportation. When the military sold a ton of war surplus bikes a solution met a problem. The unnecessary parts were removed and these bikes became everyday transportation for a lot of their owners. These bikes had rigid frames, springer front ends and brakes that were, at best, adequate. And they were ridden all over the country in every type of weather under every condition imaginable. Harleys that are much less suited to touring are ridden long distances every day. So it shouldn't be you can't tour on a soft tail, it should be I can't tour on a soft tail.

Been around Harley riders for a long time and I can probably count on one hand the times I’ve heard that about softails. And usually when they say that they’re morons anyway. Lots of us tour on softails, dynas, even sportsters. The 1200T was a nice setup for example.

I like the low rider st. If I was in the market for a new harley it would make the short list. BUT, i just did 950klms in 12 hrs including brakes on a 2013 wideglide. I love my wg.

Don't people tour on dirtbikes, adventure bikes, Choppers etc, you don't need an overpriced machine, enjoy the ride.

I just point at the LNSPLTBLVD guys who go for days on hardtail bobbers with everything strapped to a sissy bar. I've owned a goldwing and a chopped hard tail, and both can take me wherever I point the thing.

Gotta be honest - any bike can tour, depending on how insane you are. I've thought of touring on my wretched, clapped out 1986 suzuki ax 100r, which I built when I was 14, just because I want a long stretch of two stroke lunacy. Though it would be agonisingly slow, I'd definitely make it, as would the bike. Frankly, I don't think there is a well sorted bike out there that can't tour. As usual, the harley guys are talking bs when they say "you can't tour on xyz".

Why would you need a bigger Harley? I have spent a week traveling and going almost 2000 miles on a Honda Rebel 1100... I do have a fairing and some saddle bags, and a sissy bar, load it up, and it goes great. You don't need big bikes, this one is smaller than that bike.

Can't tour on a softail? I ride a rigid frame Panhead that I've had since I was 19, I'm 61 now, still ride it, occasionally several hundred miles a day, I don't know why everyone seems to think that a kick start, tank shifter, 'antique' motorcycle isn't useable as a daily driver, the bike doesn't know how to read a calendar, it was built to ride, so I ride it, so far hundreds of thousands of miles, it's been bored only 30 thousandths in it's life, and almost all of the internal engine and transmission parts are original, oil pump, lifters, all the timing gears, rods, and on, built to last, and it will cruise along all day at 80 plus, with usually never a hiccup, sure I get sore after a long ride, but who doesn't? And I'm an old fart now,

Man! You needed a partner on the ride for filming, carrying some crap,and company. My K-1600 GTLE would have been a great option.

Rode my 2020 Heritage from NY to Oklahoma in 3 days, stayed 3 days, and road back in 3 days. At least that's what a "man" can do on a softtail😉 lol.

Your right That is bull crap, Back in the day I toured on a 1983 Harley Sportster and then I bought a 1986 Harley Softail and still own it, Good suspension tuning you can ride anything anywhere, And today's bikes are way better ride then back in the day especially for a old fart like me.
