Is this one of the most difficult oil pans to replace? Probably…but I’ve got a trick! (9630)

Working on a John Deere 9630 that has a cracked oil pan. The options are either pull the engine out or figure out a way to sneak the oil pan out.

It is a wonderful opportunity. There are people in third world countries that would give anything just to be able to learn the basic fundamentals of hydraulics, electrical, and mechanical systems but they can’t because there is no tech school or apprenticeship available to them. We take for granted all the opportunities we have in the USA. We are literally offering free education and you get paid more in 2-3 months more than someone can make in a year in another country. My heart goes out to all the people that would give anything to get into this field but they can’t because there are no opportunities or they can’t afford it. I get messages all the time from people all over the world. I’m trying to do my best to help them and there is a huge need for our tech schools in the USA to provide an international program. These people are driven to succeed and we can’t get anybody in the USA to get off their butts and go to work and try to better themselves. They think the world owes them something. It doesn’t…

I miss the days when employers actually valued their employees, glad to see Sloan seems to. Back when health benefits were great, pensions existed, and you could be proud of where you worked and what you did. Many employers have taken all of this away as they follow the trend set by others.

Interesting video there Zeth! It's often impossible to follow the instructions in SA if you want to get the job done, best way is to find your own way! The G-series harvesters/forwarders I work on, you have to pull the engine to enter the sump. They are armored underneith so It's impossible to do anything more advanced than draining the oil and coolant through service-hatches. // JD Forestry mech, SWE

Hey there ZK, I hope you're well and good! Every time I watch one of your videos, I come away with even more respect for your skill and attention to detail. As a Dealer Principle, I must say that when we're performing warranty work, and my technician comes to me and says that he doesn't want to follow the Tech Manual, because he can save a lot of time and money by doing it another way, I become very uncomfortable, and even though I may have the utmost respect and confidence in my Technician, I know that if something unforeseen happens while performing this repair, in a way that runs contrary to Deere's TM, its gonna be my rear end that's on the hook, and not Deere's. I applaud you on not following the TM.this time.You saved a lot of time and cost.While working on helicopters in Nam I often found ways to get the job done a lot easier than the Manual. My Ship kept flying with no problems.Our outfit had many TM changes approved.

Wow torque turn on pan bolt????? I’m with you on the Tekton angle wrenches. I have a Techangle 1/2” and love it but I picked up a Gearwrench 3/8” torque angle that rivals the snappy one at a lower cost. Great content!

Man I've been watch your videos for awhile. And iv been at my current job for coming up on 9 years and I'm just tired of doing the same thing everyday. I machine the transmission cases for the M1A1, which is rewarding but I hit a button and I wait for the part to get done. Yes I change my ownership tools and maintain my setup but I want to do more then just hit a button. I've always been a hands on person and I love figuring out problems. In another life, I worked at a truck dealership. I can’t get over the difference between that high pressure, cutthroat, flat rate environment and the approach used at Sloan’s. If the truck dealership would have treated their employees better, we might still work there. Management constantly whined about how no one wanted to work anymore.

Zeth, another great video. Appreciate the cleanliness and care shown towards the customer's tractor. With out upsetting anyone, I did notice Justin had a loose bracelet on his wrist, that could end up catching on something and maybe leading or contributing to a nasty injury. Maybe he should just consider keeping it safe or covered up when in close proximity of so many things that it could get trapped. No offence intended, it could be a special gift, but we only get two hands to get on with. Happy New Year.

Agree 100% with that observation/suggestion. Any jewelry around moving parts or electricity is an injury or worse waiting to happen. A short circuit thru a wedding ring when working with 1000 cold cranking amp battery can literally burn your finger off. Be safe guys!

Great job - thinking outside the box! I'm sure there were a lot more steps and possible collateral damage if removing the engine. When you started the video, I thought you were going to say that removing the engine meant first removing the cab. Sad to say, but it's pretty easy to accept that as true these days. Honestly, I think the Engineers actually believe it will never need service, so they make no provision for taking it apart. And probably most of the service manuals are written by lower-ranking Engineers......

So we took a old oil filter and cut the threads off. And turned it into a plug so we didn’t have to drain the hydraulic reservoir at my shop

Zeth wins again! I was wondering if someone had over torqued that sump drain plug, which caused the pan to crack around it? It looks like the pan was made from cast aluminium, which may not cope with sudden shearing force from an impact wrench, especially in cold weather but wanted to hear your opinion?

I can speculate several reasons but we will never know the true cause.

It it were my machine I would have been satisfied with the JB Weld. Nice solid cast piece like that I doubt it would have ever caused any issues. I suppose that pan is considered a stress member of the block.

Whoever decided that torque-to-yield bolts belong on that pan should be given the opportunity to try tightening them. Head and rod bolts I can see, but the pan?

I would say that listening to Zeth at the beginning where the engine would come out, pretty easy to torque and turn those bolts sitting on a stand or on its a$$.

Be thankful for whatever tools you got we got none except a few canbus diag tools prob $100 worth and we are a bigger manufacturer so anyone who doesn’t have to pay for all your tools be grateful sounds like Sloan has it down right training atmosphere tool help everything… my only gripe with what I heard about them is $100 a year for boot especially in the field ain’t enough most decent boots are between 200-250 and that’s a year bc how they get tore up and your feet are your vehicle then your hands and mind are the blood and guts of your ability to work but feet being messed up demoralizes you for sure

I did a crankshaft bearing bolt replacement on a JD 6250 due to recalls. The tractor had front hitch and hydraulics. Was a pain in the a.. to get the pan out of there with the lines in the way. Someone at JD should known better when designing the machines.

here is a thought, remove the bolts that hold the axel on to the tractor, but replace each one with a longer bolt as you take each one to to give you even more room if needed. After you are done, simply replace the longer bolts with the correct bolts.

Oil pans can just be a pain. I've seen 3 3r compact tractors that need the oil pan replaced, which requires splitting the tractor which then requires pulling the cab. Not as bad at that machine but still makes you scratch your head as to who designed it.

Must be common for those pans to crack around the bottom drain, I replaced one the same way but that was 5 years ago and it cracked again. Tig welded the fucker this time.

Maybe you did. But I would have made sure the drain plug was not cross threaded or somehow stuck at the factory before painting it and installing it. 40 years ago my sister had a Subaru. I forget the exact circumstances. The oil drain plug could not be removed. I helped my old man to remove the pan. He brought it to work. Heat didn't work. They ended up drilling a hole in the plug to release any pressure. The thing came right out nice and easy.

ZK when you took that axle apart do use any kind of sealant other than the gasket? I have a 9510R that was seeping oil where the axle housing bolts to the center part of the housing.A dealer took it apart and replaced the seals but I think it’s still leaking. I won’t know for sure till I get it in the field this spring.
