Today I'm reacting to a fence post pulling video! Particularly a concrete fence post pulling video. This method is similar to one we've seen before, but the big question is: is this even worth it? Let's dig into it!

The guy lifting that post, was cracking me up. Glad he is better at video editing then physical labor. Farmers jack with a small chain is all you need, maybe a paver stone 16x16", (or 2x12" board cut off) to sit the jack on to prevent the jack from sinking down. Really though, that small of length in the ground, with that little amount of concrete. I could just rock the post and lift it out by hand before he cut his first piece of wood. I am starting to fall in love with polyurethane foam for posts, as it is wildly strong and fast.

I work for a fence company in TX that specializes in repairs. We use the same kind of jack. We use metal footings welded on the jack. And use chains to secure to the post, wood or metal

is there a good way when using one of these jacks to try to ensure that the foundation comes up with the post? or perhaps a good way to pull the concrete out after in the chance that it doesn't come up with the post?
@ThisOldSkater

I used this method and it works great. The guy in that video kinda over did it with all the supports and lift points though. You do need some kind of base for the jack, but that can really be anything flat that can take some force. Then you just use a chain with grab hooks to pull the post out. Maybe 5min of prep and 30 seconds of operating the jack and the post is out. Works for just pulling a concrete footing out with a rotted off post too.

As an amateur diyer in the UK I will definitely be using this concept when it come to replacing my posts next time. Back in 2007 when I last replaced them the amount of time and effort I used in getting the old ones out was ridiculous as the amount of concrete seemed to be at least double what you'd expect. I'd be using a trolley jack though and I expect the posts will be rotten so that will be another challenge ... Oh I wish I'd put in concrete posts back then!

Using a lift with a chain keeps the post from leaning as it is coming up. The way he did it doesn't. Fastest easiest way I've seen w/o making a bigger hole is this big lift jack plus chain only around the post. It makes enough grip AND create a backward torque toward the jack, keeping the post straight as it comes up. once it's up high enough, it'll just sit there ready to be pushed in whatever direction you need. and with the chain method, you don't spend any extra time making a jig to affix to the post.

Hiya Joe, Two points you mentioned. 1 The wood he has repaired he'd probably keep. (BUT) Not a lot of UK concrete posts have holes in them, so there's extra time for drilling, and 2 You mentioned the handle coming up and smashing him in the face.....Simple fix, use a six foot aluminum scaffold tube over the handle( This also gives you greater power ) Hope this helps.

Interesting. The difference with the jack is when you're lifting (like a vehicle) against gravity, you indeed have that danger of spring back... However, pulling a post out of the ground....when you let go, almost nothing happens - the post doesn't try to go back to it's starting point. There's no 'spring' like with a free weight... Enjoy your stuff very much. Thanks.

I would have concerns about the lack of safety with regards to the way the Jack moved whilst lifting the Post. I would also question his ability to lift the type of posts used y D&J and others which are twice the thickness of the one he lifted and also as you said Joe, the amount of Postcrete anchoring the post. I think he should take care with recommending this way of doing the job as it does not meet any sensible safety requirements.

I disagree about the jack missing the next slot to lock into. It will default to the last slot it was in as long it was in lift mode. If you use a ground probe to loosen the suction of the ground putting 6 holes around it, right next to it, it pulls easier.
@mikemorgan5015
@mikemorgan5015 Жыл бұрын
Yes and if the handle slips from his hands that handle will snap back up like a giant spring mouse trap and potentially kill the operator with a blunt force head trauma. And the jack will have settled very quickly into it's previous slot as you mentioned. Pay no mind to the fatality. The jack worked perfectly, as designed. These are GREAT jacks. They are VERY versatile. But for folks who aren't experienced with them and don't read the ten pages of warnings that probably come with them these days, they can be dangerous. I was lucky enough to learn about the dangers of ratcheting jacks as a child. GM cars in the 1970s came with ratcheting jacks for flat tire changes. If you got it just right, when lowering it, you could get it going and it would automatically clicketly click it's way all the way back down on it's own if you let it go. I was lucky in that no bones were apparently broken. I found out a couple decades later that, in fact my nose WAS broken. The doctor kept looking at the xrays, then at my nose, then back at the xrays, wondering how my nose looks straight in the flesh but so disfigured on the film. Haha. Bottom line: I have great respect for the forces involved here and know to keep my face out of the path of that jack handle.

All you need is the jack and a length of chain. Wrap the chain around the post and around the jack and start cranking. They pop right out. The jack can be at an angle to avoid the concrete it's not an issue. This is way over engineered.

My guys yanked 4 posts today with a pair of diggers faster than this guy could introduce himself. Typically our posts are yanked with mini's but if we do it by hand, post hole diggers work fine. If the old concrete won't be in the way of new posts, we give them a good whack on top to separate from concrete and leave concrete in ground. Post will come out easily by hand if you can get the separation.

Dig them out by hand??? Really? I've just replaced 4 rotted fence posts. First post took 6 hours to dig out by hand. Best tools, with limited room to move, was a spike and a 6-pound stumpy sledge hammer. Hole is too small to swing a bigger sledge hammer. Used a hammer drill with a long bit. An angle grinder. Have a 1.8m spud bar that did nothing but jar my whole body. Second lump of concrete broke and done in 30 minutes. Phew! Getting better with experience I thought. Third one was taking so long (4 hours), got a jack hammer that kept getting stuck. Didn't make much difference. Fourth post, I managed to pull the rotten post out of the concrete and slip a new one in. My neighbour, who is a carpenter/construction manager, only helped with the last two. He has now gone missing in action. Have 3 more to go. Have bought some heavy-duty metal brackets and 150 mm and 250 mm galvanised screws to try and jack them out. This will take about 10 minutes to set up. Will upload a video if it works. Problem I have is that my house is built on solid rock. There is no movement in the ground for the concrete to break. My guess is the fencers also put the posts in with the same concrete that was used on my slab and used far too much concrete. Post mix with more sand would've made it easier to break. Every situation is different. Would like to see you dig my concrete out by hand.

@@JoeEverest part of the problem is that it is all capitals. The weight of the font is even across all of the letter shapes. That means that the only differentiation for the eye comes from the shape of the letter. Full caps implies weight, but the font implies sleek. so my suggestion would be to either make the font heavier (or at least part of the font) or change the capitalization. There is a reason that you do fences the way you do. There is a reason we have upper and lower case letters. Or serif and san serif letter. Details matter, as I know you know.
