its improved, but nothing compared to how it was back before the earthquakes. There's some nice rebuilds, but it lacks the soul it used to have. Any old building saved has been gutted and sold to the hospo industry, rather than being used for what it originally was, as if theyre trying to turn the centre into a tourist trap rather than a real city

Hi guys! I was born in Scotland (and have lived in the North of England since 2004) but grew up in Christchurch. It was what I always considered my hometown. The quake did so much damage, but NZs construction standards were so good that only the oldest buildings were seriously damaged. (For the strength of the quake it is practically a miracle that only 185 people were killed) but many of my old haunts have vanished. I am very proud of the rebuilding work that has gone on (and the resilient spirit of the residents.) I later found out that a colleague of mine in Greater Manchester had been up in the spire of Christchurch Cathedral just 15 minutes before it collapsed. The South Island is spectacular and Christchurch is a great launch pad!

A lot of beautiful historic buildings were lost in the 2011 earthquake. There's still a lot of rebuilding left to do. For example in the CBD there are lots of empty spaces where earthquake damaged buildings were demolished and now used as temporary carparks until a new building is built. It's like that all over Christchurch.

There are so many beautiful places in Auckland and further up the North Island. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your stay.
@shoalbayboy Жыл бұрын
People vote with their feet when it comes to where they like to live and Auckland wins that easily. Christchurch is less than a suburb of Auckland and a suburb that's prone to disasters which fortunately Auckland tax money has been able to restore for them. Cantabrians know this painful fact but bad mouth Auckland as a way of coping it's just their inferiority shining through. Christchurch is okay for passing through to the better parts of the South Island just don't mention you're from Auckland .

Seen the crowds outside and thought this place must be good. Didn't find anything special about the coffee either. Just got to find a good barista using the particular beans that suit your taste! Been to Riverside Market a few times with the family, never tried the Indonesian food but it's now on our radar! A riverside market recommendation of mine is Bacon Bros aka Shaka Bros, in my opinion.. the 2nd best burgers in the country. 1st being Fergburger in Queenstown.

My nephew was killed in the earthquake. That may be your perspective. I still have whanau who live in Christchurch. It's still broken, & will never be the same again. When you still have the stench of sewage drifting over the place, empty house lots, with nothing, people still homeless! It's broken!!

When I lived there in the70s, it was the most racist city in New zealand. We never went out alone in case we ran into white guys.

It's still racist now. Maybe not as bad as during the 1970's. A group of us flew there for work, booked into motel and one of my work colleagues went to a dairy accross the road and two men on the street racially abused him.

@@chrissabre-jf6hi we had only just arrived at our motel from the airport. That same day I walked into a bar next door to our motel and everyone was talking and the moment I walked in it suddenly went quiet and everyone was giving me dirty looks and I walked straight out.

@@wellingtonian2009you sound paranoid I'm dark and don't get racism you would be more likely to experience that in Wellington and Auckland.

@@StuartFarmar-r5v very negative, you don't realise what you have in new Zealand you have it all and your away from all the issues in the world. It’s magical place. When you compare to the rest of the world you’re in a very lucky place!
