as a gen z folk, hearing any story about 1990s internet is just wild. crazy how you could connect to people by just building a website that said “hey this person is cool” glad it ended with some good connections for you

Cool seeing this, Paul! Yep, that is indeed some premier vintage Sanborn! Back in our college days I had to consciously strive to NOT sound like him on pop/blues/RnB Alto because he SO defined our generation’s concept of what it’s supposed to sound like. An older friend went to college with Dave at Indiana(?). I asked my friend if he and others knew Dave was gonna be big someday. My friend said - “Oh yeah, it was obvious!”

Pretty sure this was on Letterman when he did a special in Las Vegas. This one was awesome - but I think his solo on New York State of Mind with Billy Joel on the 1988 Grammys was even better.

Paul I’m pretty sure that’s Eddie Daniel’s and not Vadala on flute. Anything’s possible but it really looks like him to me and makes more sense that it’s him, given the “top shelf” NY players / nature of the situation

Have you examined his side gig on Sleeping Gypsy?

I wish I could find it. I only have this one song on video, tried to share it a while back and it got blocked due to copyright claim.

I saw the complete performance of this on KZbin by searching “David Sanborn Sammy Davis Jr On Letterman”

I'll nominate his solo on "In My Own Dream" with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

so, its in ....A ? . Ha. Agreed my brother Mr. PC, that is perhaps the best Sanborn solo around. It was recorded on the Dave Letterman show broadcast from Las Vegas in the early 90's. Glad I caught that on VHS! Hope to see you soon Bro. Your Steel City Super Fan.

Very soulful solo but definitely not his best ever.

Bonnie Raitt “Your Good Thing”. Great and possibly best solo by David Sanborn
