I have the original Thermapen Mark nothing! Over 15 years old. Had to send it in once under warranty--free! Now the battery compartment is broken. Taped over-done! Still working like a charm!

I have both the Mk4 and the ONE. I get the same results as the video. ONE is a hair faster than the Mk4. As of Aug 2024 the Mk4 is sold out. Thanks for making a uniform 32 F ice bath. So many reviewers don't and the "final" temperature bounces around a degree or two making fair comparisons very difficult.

Awesome video buddy and very well said also!!! And by the way the thermal pen one is on sale for 74.99 as of 5/20/2023!!! Today was my very first time ever smoking anything and I definitely wish I had a fast temperature pen one I’d definitely be much happier!!! I’m definitely going to be getting one for sure!!! Just had to upgrade from my old mk4 to the One. The back panel on my mk4 broke. Don't know how as I never dropped it. Just took it out of my drawer and it fell apart. I super glued it back together but the IP67 rating is definitely gone. I like the battery/control compartment a lot more on the One, seems less susceptible of breaking.

To me, if you have the MK4 or classic, not worth it to upgrade. The MK4 was nearly as quick as the ONE in both tests, maybe a split second off. I think the biggest difference was the 1F difference in reading. if you didn't care that the MK4 reached the same 32F reading as the One, then the speed was nearly the same. The same goes for the hot water bath.

How much of an upgrade is the MK4 over the previous "Super-Fast" classic? Worth an upgrade if you already have the old model

I don't have a Classic thermapen to compare it with, but in my experience they're all super fast. I guess the question is if you're finding that your hand has to be over a hot grill too long while you're measuring, then maybe it's time for an upgrade. If you're not running into performance or excessive heat issues, then I'd roll with what's working.

I am thinking about buying MK4 for steak, could i measure temperature of cast iron pan surface with it or i need seperate infrared thermometer?

I haven't tried to measure the surface of a cast iron pan with the Thermapen, but I think i'd plan on a separate infrared for that use. They do make a Thermapen that can do both though. I think it's the Thermapen IR?

Just curious, when you take a temp of the liquid is it necessary to shake the thermapen like you did in the video? I've seen a couple of videos of other people and they'd just hold it still.

You don’t have to shake it. I simply do that to make sure I’m getting the overall temp of the liquid. If it’s an ice bath, am I too close to an ice cube? Is that messing up the reading? If it’s boiling, am I close to the edge or the middle where there will be slightly different temps. I’m looking for 32f and 212f in those tests, and I could easily skew the test by measuring a single spot in either case, so I move it around to get the average of that whole space. Could certainly do it differently, but that’s my take on it. When I’m not testing on camera, I just hold it still.
