I used to work (& live) in Battle, East Sussex, years ago . (1980's) and loved it there. The battle was supposed to have taken place on Senlac Hill, by the way, and the Abbey was built by the Norman Duke, "William the Bastard" (on the site where King Harold was killed) as he was called before he became known as 'William the Conqueror, and King.

Another vid that made me smile like this 😊😊 guuud jarrrrrbbbb boys! A long time ago - in times known as LifeBC (before children 😉) - my husband, also an EH member, was invited to a Festival of Music at Battle Abbey (I was the fee paying +1 😏) we duly drove to Battle, parked up (can’t remember if we had to pay to park or not but I’m sure it wouldn’t have costed £4!! 😂 ) and we had to join the queue to be transported to the seating area in a Land Rover, going across the really “rear end” aching rough ground! The seating area was up very high, looking “down” on the Abbey in the distance, in a wooded area (it was a deliberately cleared showground spectator spot, so all ok!) We were not sure just what to expect but sat down ready to be entertained … and it was a then identified as a Battle of Britain showpiece - with the military bands from the British Army, RAF and the Navy. It was one of those moments when you can sense “their” pride wearing their majestic Dress uniforms as The Dragoon Guards, Scottish pipers and the Irish Guards paraded around the beautiful background of Battle Abbey as they played some typical military music, tunes we would associate with WWII and some “pop” music. It was so rousing and entertaining and all in all bloody brilliant….. but the highlight was yet to come… It was late afternoon but still very light as it was June and it suddenly seemed that sound of the music being played over the mics had got very low … ooerr.. had something gone wrong?? For the hundred of us in the audience, we were saying “Hope they can fix this” when there was this thrummmmmmmmming noise coming from overhead - it was very low and a little bit menacing … and then the sound got louder and then instantly recognisable…. It was two Spitfires flying overhead doing whirls in the sky….ohhhhhhh..l it was one of those heart pumping lump in the throat, feeling proud and patriotic of your country moments as us peeps in the audience cheered with delight at seeing them and then… The bands started playing Rule Britannia ….. honest, there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience! We cheered and clapped and did some more cheering and then the festival organisers played those familiar songs from WWII that we could singalong to. There were clever clog knowalls in the audience who had prior knowledge of the evening and had brought flags to wave. I so wanted a flag to wave! It was a bit like Last Night of the Proms and no one considered it jingoistic nonsense - it was just all round good but emotional fun - thinking about it now, even though it was years ago, still makes me 🥲🥲 it was a glorious day/evening out. I’ve been to Bodiam Castle too but have you visited Goudhurst at all? It is one of my most favourite villages in Kent - stunningly pretty! If you haven’t, it’s worth a look as there’s lots to see and investigate! Hope you enjoyed reading my memories of Battle Abbey, sorry but I know I can waffle on! 😊

@@JJExtra oh thank you for the linky 👍🏻 I have now watched and enjoyed that beauty! Cannot understand how I missed it the first time around! 😨😥 but all is now present and correct! Yes, Goudhurst and Sissinghurst, truly living up to the (deserved) status of AONB! Lovely video and glorious scenery and my favourite castle is also Scotney; you are right, it doesn’t “look” typically English more like a little French chateau in the Loire valley 😄 I’ve only been to one chateau sadly but it was still grande et beau! On to “not so pretty” things - have you heard of the Grasshopper Inn in Westerham - it WAS (emphasis on the was 😨) a stunning Inn dating back to 1271!! Over the years it has been “modernised” - good and bad 🙄- and way back in the 1970’s (probably before you were born! 😲) it was the pub I and my group of mates would go to, for a “posh” night out - it was a bit of a drive out from Orpington etc but it was the place to go if you were celebrating something special etc. Tudor beams, stained glass windows and a grand piano and the bedrooms named after Henry VIII and his wives 🤫 The other day, I was looking for something on YT and I just happened to see a link about the Grasshopper and having pleasant memories of the place, I was wondering (and hoping) that it was still the same. Watching the video, I was both horrified and saddened to see this once allegedly “historic” pub was in such a state of squalor and has just been left in a state of ruin!! The reason the link was on YT was because a group of men whose “hobby” it is to visit abandoned buildings had “broken in” to the pub and armed with a vid cam was filming inside, giving a running commentary, whilst trying to not be seen by the security guard sitting in his car in the car park, supposedly “protecting” the premises! One of the bedrooms still has a four poster bed in place! And the piano is still there too…… I just wondered if you knew had heard about this pub and if you knew what was going to happen to it? I’ve looked on the Kent websites - plans to build a 65 bed care home etc 🤷 . Some group or company has to be responsible for the decimation of the pub and seeing it as it is now and not how it used to be, has made me 🤬🤬🤬🤬 if you do know, please advise! I might write a strong letter to my MP 😂
