Is this the end? | Ashby Canal | Solo Narrowboat Adventure

This week I continue my cruise to the end of the Ashby Canal where I visit Snarestone Wharf and talk to some of the volunteers about the breach of the canal that happened in 2020 and the wonderful work they have done here. I then reverse my narrowboat down the recently restored section of the Ashby for 1/4 of a mile through weed - but wow it was worth it!

Brilliant Heidi, you went one step further than me and took your boat to the 45 foot winding hole at Bridge 62, my own video dropped 2 weeks ago. I covered the newly opened section, the breach and some of the restoration. I have also walked the whole of the missing portion to Moira, where it becomes navigable again ( for some three miles ) there, they have the Moira Furnace Museum and day boat! The Basin at Conkers is huge and if one walks a mile beyond that to ‘Overseal’, you will arrive at the last mile post at the fisheries, an amazing insight. I love the Ashby, cruised it many times, sadly I had to leave, but that is another story. Great Video.

Hello Heidi and Bonny !!! Heidi - I am amazed at how well you drove the Rum Wench backwards ... I drive a small Jeep and going backwards is NOT MY FRIEND. There was so much amazing in this week's video. Bonny didn't have a stress attack in the tunnel (I think I might have as I am claustrophobic). Excellent reversing! I just walked the last section from the swing bridge. That was five odd years ago; only two boats moored up on that section past the swing bridge. It occurred to me at the time that if the volunteer lads and ladies done the thing with the digger then they could have done a "full sized" (whatever that is) winding hole and effectively added about a quarter mile of moorings past the swing bridge. Might be useful for attracting boaters, keeping that short section of canal "flushed" of greenery and bringing more customers to the shop and café. And, not impossible to do what the Shackerstone pub does and invite a fish and chip man with a van perhaps once a month in the summer. Van might only be there for an hour then away to another destination. The pub at Shackerstone also supports "pop up" restaurants and a travelling pizza /kebab man too. Villagers get to dine out now and again and pub gets wet sales. Win:win all round, well for us punters anyway.

I had my first trip out on the ashby. I fell over after stepping off the boat. My foot went from under me and i remember being told not to let go of the rope so was being dragged along the towpath. My foot came up like a balloon. I told my brother what happens on the boat stays on the boat. He said it didn't happen on the boat it happened on the towpath and had i not heard of the towpath telegraph. We laughed so much that night. I also had a Bonnie, black and tan staffie. She was my baby and had such a shiny coat. Your Bonnie does too she is beautiful.

You are doing great with Bonny's recall. Continue training recall at different times and places and sometimes treat but not always. It's an ongoing training with different distraction levels. As her recall is looking so good, I have a suggestion for you. How would you like her to keep an eye on you when you're out and about instead of you having to watch her? The way you start this behavior is to hide! A field with wrapped baked is a perfect place but even a forest walk can be used. With no other people or dogs around, when Bonny gets 20-30 yards or so ahead of you , step behind a bale or tree out bush. Stay quiet. She has a great nose and when she finds you treat lavishly. Mix hiding into your daily walks and Bonny will start looking back over her shoulder to make sure you're still there. She'll keep part of her attention on you on walks instead of assuming you're always there.
