@@iamcelinenavarroI joined and deleted Facebook so fast years ago and explored all the platforms. I really like Tumblr but its very niche, so Im sticking with KZbin & YES Instagram. Instagram is ALL about community building esp the last few yrs as viral influencer culture goes out. . I believe this may bring more ppl here wanting safe spaces away from Facebook (where you see a lot of what your friends share or engage last I checked) Will this be affected YES, but to what degree is a large part on the user to co-curate their experience. Id start by turning the political dial down and go through all your settings. DO NOT engage content you dont want to see. Dont search anything on explore and dont post any related keywords even if you write ‘no political content’ on a post etc because your telling the algorithm to feed you political content! Good Luck

@@iamcelinenavarroHonestly we need to get off youtube as well. Its full of misinfo and bots. Perhaps you think its easy to find community here as a creator but as a user its absolute trash! Freedom of speech is important for ALL, even if you don’t agree. You can not remove bias at all, if you have to make decision and if you even start to ask some question you already have a specific bias. The only thing you can do is to aware of the bias and use it to reach your own goals or not allow it to influence you to some degree, for this you should have to trust your own judgement and be ready to make mistakes. "Fact checkers" - is nothing more than glorified censorship - I know what I'm talking about. And experts do and will make mistakes. And science is based on making mistakes - but what science does - it takes these mistakes and get experience from them if it is not crooked by big money interest- but this is close but different topic.

Unpopular opinion here but I see these changes as very positive actually. Fact checking hasn’t really been happening anyway up to now and lots of misinformation has been shared all around social media all the time… it would be impossible to fact check everything. And also there are things that are difficult to find one „truth” for, since there will always be different opinions on everything, that’s what makes us human. I love and very much support free speech - obviously I don’t support hate and violence, however everyone deserves the right to express their opinion. If somebody doesn’t support the lqbtq community for example, then they should be able to say this and give their reasons for it (in a kind way of course) without being attacked by others saying that this is wrong. Restricting free speech and expression of opinion is passive aggressive too, and not fair, even if there are good intentions behind it. Everyone deserves to express their opinion without being judged and harrassed for it. I think it’s all about how it’s expressed. Again, I don’t support violent and hateful speech, but there’s a huge difference between saying something in a hateful way and simply expressing our opinion gently. Imagine someone saying that they don’t support lgbtq (in a gentle way) - that person would be immediately attacked. Let’s not be exactly as hateful and violent as we criticise others to be.
@yousername1614 күн бұрын
Every reason for not supporting lgbtq+ is because of hate. It's not a discussion about if chocolate is better than potato chips. People actually get harmed.
@RoadsLessTraveled14 күн бұрын
One thing you say in your response often is “in a gentle way” but I think that’s such a generous way of looking at it. It makes me think of the James Baldwin quote, “We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist.” There often isn’t a gentle way to express one’s opposition of another’s life and right to exist. For this reason, these regulations are in place and blurring the lines leads to more harm than it does good often times. Personally, I do think speech should be limited to a degree for the benefit of all but that’s something for another day. I think that fact checking and community notes could exist and even though people could look on the brighter side for all these things, it seems pretty clear why some of these changes were made and it isn’t just for the benefit of all if the main benefit really goes to the tech CEOs

Right, so changing policies that explicitly allow women to be objectified and hate speech against LGBTQ+ people to be tolerated is positive?
@NewsTrendWeekly13 күн бұрын
Agree with you. Fact checking is laughable because it was used as a cover for political gains.
@ashnichrist12 күн бұрын
The problem is, Free Speech also means people are allowed to share misinformation because "its just their opinion." Free Speech and Fact Checking are antithetical. Therefore people can share misinfo about LGBTQ+, policy, etc. This is incentivized by the fact that emotional sensationalization (NOT fact) is rewarded by the algorithm. These changes deepen potential for misunderstanding, hate, etc. Even if the intention for you is kindness, that is not how most will handle it.

Thank you so so much for sharing! As a user of social media and a social media strategist, I feel exactly the same way you do. It's frustrating that they are saying that fact checking is censorship. Shouldn't we want to remove hate speech, shouldn't we want to stop the spread of false information, shouldn't we want accuracy in facts and reporting? It's been so frustrating to watch tech leaders align their policies with the incoming administration. Also, Elon's Twitter takeover caused the loss of so many features and also a huge decrease in users and as you say advertisers too. It's frustrating to see Meta follow suit. :( I want to still use Facebook and Instagram because of the communities built there and I know my clients will want to use these platforms (especially with the TikTok ban) but I also have mixed feelings supporting platforms that are moving in this negative direction. :( You're also right that if we all leave, then our voices are removed from the platform and the more negative content will grow. It's such a tough moment in social media history.

I only hope more white creators that aren’t directly affected by the changes opt to stand in solidarity with BIPOC and LGBTQ people. If they start to loose revenue bc EVERYONE takes a stand then they’ll clean up the bs they’re trying to pull off. But if people just pay lips service but still use and do business on these platforms bc they aren’t directly harmed then unfortunately you’re inadvertently helping champion hate. I am on Gab all the time. Gab is the MOST free speech platform out there and it's just wonderful. You gotta have a thick skin sometimes but its so refreshing and open. The key at Gab is Groups. You find a group that shares your interests and join. The groups are self moderating and if you're a trolling jerk... well groups don't tolerate that well and your presence on the group will be ignored and the jerk will end up talking just to himself. Do not be afraid of free speech, it's absolutely vital in a free society. And you can say whatever you want without threat of being censored. Free speech is a breath of fresh air not available to many countries controlled by tyranny. Yes, America the beautiful.

Thanks for sharing this information. I was wondering why some people I was following suddenly announced they’re leaving. Meta just keeps getting worse honestly. Didn’t they just announce that they were going to have AI influencers on the platform too and you wouldn’t be able to tell they were AI on their profiles? I wonder if they’re hoping advertisers will remain and use that as a way to get more money (and take money from creators). I don’t even know what’s going on anymore with these platforms. Part of me thinks Meta was one of the platforms behind the TikTok ban (since they were their biggest competitor and they’re mentioning foreign companies) and this newest announcement is them showing their alignment with Trump. All I know is that the internet is getting crazy and I’m really getting tired of it. I want to be a light in all of the darkness on social media but I also hate the idea of rewarding these platforms and dealing with all the toxic mental hurdles they put us through. 😩

Some of the things he is doing doesn't sound the best. I don't understand why whenever someone mentions free speech, peoples minds go instantly to hate speech. why are so many people against one of our most important rights that we have.
@iproducefilm15 күн бұрын
Because too many people misunderstand what free speech really means and what limitations it has by the law of the constitution. You can’t make statements that are false or threatening to someone by law, yet this is exactly what lack of fact checking and these other new “policies” will allow for. However, even prior to this, Meta was doing a pretty shitty job at fact checking and preventing bullying, so the only difference is there will be way more of it now and there will be no accountability.

What was a topic you weren't allowed to talk about online without it being hate?
@KeithDixonPhotos14 күн бұрын
@ @iproducefilm It's natural for people to have beliefs or opinions that differ from their neighbors. A difference in opinion doesn’t make one person right and the other wrong. When you have an open and respectful conversation with someone who thinks differently, you often discover there’s value in their perspective-even if you don’t agree with everything they say. Censorship of ideological ideas, especially on topics that aren't black and white, can stifle meaningful dialogue. For example, someone might be hesitant about vaccines or have concerns about trans women in women's sports because of personal experiences that shaped their views. Instead of shutting down those opinions, we should have conversations. Listening to their reasoning and sharing your perspective can lead to understanding and even change minds. Without the space to express themselves, people hold onto their ideas, potentially unaware of the harm they might cause. Honest, respectful discussions are how we grow as individuals and as a society.

@@yousername16 I haven't had a situation like that. What some might take as hate or dis information might be from a place of love or concern from another. people are too hard on one another these days. they act like everyone has had the same upbringing, same exposure to cultural differences, or same values. That is rarely ever the case. and when someone sees something online they don't agree with they often go into attack mode instead of just voicing their opinion in a respectful, or place of love and understanding.

@@KeithDixonPhotos I 100% agree with you. I’m not talking about sharing opinions. I don’t believe opinions were ever censored by any platform. I see threads with different opinions online all the time across all platforms. What I’m talking about is people posting dangerous misinformation that can encourage hate or violence towards a particular person or group. Do you agree that those things should be fact checked?

I love that you're talking about this Katie! I actually decided to step away from Instagram a few months ago because it just didn't feel healthy and Meta has completely strayed from my moral and ethical values at this point. It just didn't feel right anymore to spend so much time on the platform. I've turned to more private communities and speaking to my audience in my own space, and it's been so beneficial to my mental health and my business has seen more growth as well.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s both sad and disturbing. My high school friends are still on Facebook. My first staff my older uncles and aunts. So I’m staying for that. But it’s going to be a horrible platform moving forward and I’m genuinely concerned for minorities, marginalized groups and women. Here we go…

I think there are pros and cons to this. Personally, I make content in regards to health and sexology and just saying the word gets your video taken down or shadow banned on informational useful content for people. - I have been receiving hate comments from KZbin, IG and TikTok for years now and I'm completely unbothered, it's something that's never going to go away and has nothing to do on attack of a certain groups. More so, bullies are bullies. For people promoting work, (my day job outside of just content creating is social media marketing, content creating for other creators and businesses) and because meta has been SO censored, the tiniest of thing could make you flagged or never able to make an add again.

With the TT ban, meta backing said ban for their own benefit, plus all these ridiculous changes: I’m 100% focusing on KZbin as my main. I don’t use socials for my personal life so I don’t feel like I’m missing out, but considering I’m trying to come back with my business this year on the internet- it’s so sad to feel like I’m being limited on what i morally want to associate my business with. Ugh. Good luck everyone. I guess this is a new hurdle.

I literally only use my business page on these platforms. I do not interact on a personal level on these platforms anymore because yuck. So this doesn't affect me in the same way as it does most people, but I can still feel whatever one else does. I wish that I could completely get rid of them but content creation is part of how I make my income and can afford to travel so I have to be on social media. I just wish it wasn't so poisonous.

Thanks for the update Katie! And congrats on 300K! Maybe I'm biased, but I think the Meta changes are a blessing in disguise and just encourages creators to go all in on KZbin. The Instagram/Facebook algorithm is specifically designed to keep you addictively scrolling for as long as possible - this is best done via negative/political/emotionally triggering content, which is why they've rolled out these new changes imo. I hope this doesn't effect too many creators. PS. F*** Texas lol KZbin is King 👑

Great conversation, Katie, and I appreciate that you addressed this topic. However, I think it's short sighted to ask people not to leave. Leaving is the only way to send a message to these billionaires that we won't tolerate their behavior. We need to actively find other, safer platforms (Bluesky instead of X, etc.). Some places obviously won't be as robust initially as the places we are leaving, but they will improve features over time. I am a content creator on KZbin and I'm more grateful than ever that we built our own community that we host outside of Facebook. There is strength in numbers to create real change.

The best you can do is abandon these platforms, whatever you say or do, you are filling Meta’s pockets. There are new alternatives coming, we just need to be aware and make the switch.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I've been waiting to see other top creators talk about this and it's been disheartening not to see anything especially on said platforms. I get free speech but when did we decide that hate speech and misinformation = free speech. I was an educator for 5 years and before that 10 years in child care. We wouldn't tolerate children name calling or being mean so why do we tolerate this from adults? We've lost (or maybe never had) an ability to have difficult conversations in respectful, kind ways. If anyone is looking for a way to start communicating as we navigate the turbulence of this change Non Violent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg is a great place to start.

Katie, so well said! I have felt more and more disconnected from these social media platforms. I mentally and emotionally feel so much better if I go on them with purpose then get off - stay out of the "rabbit holes", ha, ha! I keep asking myself "how can we look at this differently"? I mean, what can we as creators do differently to build community. Let's get creative to connect. They only win when we give them our power. Every . one . matters and by that I include the LGBTQ and maybe we empower each other by taking our communities somewhere else. It's been said since the inception of these platforms that we never own anything and "they" can make changes at any time - which can change our businesses. Well, here we go.

Thanks so much for talking about this. We really want to have a positive environment not just for us as creators, but for our community as well. As female creators, everyone knows we face unique challenges, and I'm hoping we can hold on to spaces worth investing in. Congrats on your milestone! 🌱

Thank you for this video! I need to get more involved in the social media space being a manager and learning more. So I appreciate you making things easier for us to understand cause it can be really overwhelming to keep up with. I definitely think we should stick around and fight back as much as we can. I also can't really think of another social media that would provide the selling and promotional ability for local business to local people. Instagram and Facebook are the best for this. KZbin would be great for community but not for local selling and business's sharing themselves. I have also seen some LGBTQ+ channels say they are getting monetization removed from their videos on here, which is really sad. I'm not sure of a platform that has the potential yet. I guess we wait to see

I only use Facebook as a means to share my KZbin channel videos. Also in the last 6 months I unfollowed anyone that talks politics. Not interested. I say, I turned off politics, because politics turned me off. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I had a feeling TikTok and Meta were somehow going to be disrupted and so I focus only on YT with 1 weekly post on FB sharing the video.

As a disabled creator this is definitely scary but honestly the hate and horrid ableist comments that already happen whenever a video goes viral. There is also a lot of folks in the community mentioning they believe their content has been blacklisted or limited.
