We finally back with our vintage RV, Clementine! But, as usual, we've got another huge problem 😭 So now, instead of picking back up on our epic 50 state road trip, we’re towing our RV to Chicago and trying to figure out what to do in the meantime.

I remember once saying to my mechanic that I was going to buy a second hand car that had done 200,000 miles. But it had recently had a brand new engine fitted, so it would be fine. My mechanic looked at me and said "Your problem will be that the rest of the car will still have done 200,000 miles". Your problems are ongoing and really you should sell Clementine and look for a 2010 model RV. Spend your time traveling, rather than fixing.

I'm so sorry guys. I have a feeling you've been the victims of incompetent and possibly, unscrupulous repair shops. A competent, knowledgeable, and honest mechanic, would have had all those needs taken care of in a visit or two. There's no reason you should have to keep returning Clementine for more repairs or uncompleted work. Best of luck going forward and love your channel!

The sad truth is that engine swaps have a reputation of acting like this. That's why people immediately sell their cars afterwards. I did an engine swap on an old buick about 20 years ago for $700. It ran, but never as well as it did originally. They probably would've been better off rebuilding the original chevy motor that was in it.

I really feel like the moment Eric said that they were supposed to return Clementine back to the repair shop for an engine adjustment after a short burn-in of the new engine (set number of miles) and they did not do this that this would mean major problems from that point onward. Perhaps Eric did not hear them say this or who knows what the miscommunication was. Nonetheless I don't think you can put sole blame on the mechanics here. Yes, it's unfortunate this happened. But Eric needs to take responsibility for some of this.

With Clementine, you will always be able to make some sweet lemonade when she gives you lemons. Turning her into an Airb&b would be pretty awesome, and the old girl could make you some scratch! We had a class C when I was a kid in the 70s, and it broke down ALL the time, even though it was pretty new back then. Afraid to say it but you will probably have nothing but LOTS more problems, especially on a trip as long as a 50 stater. She’s just to old, and too hard to keep running. Most RVs, even the new ones like you’ve shown, are not built to last, and they don’t. Would love to see you restore a vintage travel trailer someday! Go with an Airstream, those WERE built to last!! Love your vlog!!

Guys! You had the PERFECT opportunity at the car show to talk with old school gearheads! They LOVE to gtg and diagnose things like that. I'm almost positive they would have figured it out and also hooked you up with someone who knows those engines and could fix it with their eyes closed and one arm behind their back. That car show was full of people that know engines inside and out. I wish you would've made a separate post of Clementine's newest issue before deciding to ship it to Chicago to let us give you some suggestions. I'm surprised you have to pay for them to diagnose it. That engine isn't under warranty with that repair shop still? If they didn't do it right the first time, or second time, etc. I personally wouldn't trust them to get it right with another attempt.

I put a quarter million miles on a mid 70's 350.... with almost nothing other than routine maintenance. Granted carbs and ignition parts from that era are long in the tooth, but old school car guys will know what is good for show, what is go for go, and what is going to be the most bulletproof. They will also know what is mission critical from an installation and ongoing service point of view to avoid the specialty hot rod scenario where only a single shop has the knowledge to work on the specific set of components chosen.

I feel for these guys. The mechanics they're taking it to are telling them they can't work on it and it needs to go back to Chicago. If memory serves, that shop took forever the first time around. I would not want to take it back there. I have to say, I'm totally shocked that they couldn't find someone local to fix it. Even with these new EFI's, the 350 is about as basic as it gets. This isn't some exotic v5 euro-diesel.

@@applebutter4036 I feel for them too. I bought a 2006 motorhome and waited until I found a Chevy (definitely harder to come by) because I'm familiar with working on them, I've had several Camaros and a WS6 TransAm. I went to many races and car shows, hung out with F-body people. I'm not sure who is giving them advice like towing it to Chicago, but I know its hard to figure out what to do when you're not familiar with cars. I hope they start taking Ruby to more car shows in hopes of becoming friends with the car scene people, it really helps having friends like that. It could save you lots of money if you don't work on your own vehicles.

OMG!! I agree. That must be the most common vintage motor out there. There are likely more mechanics that can work on that than the new ones. @@Theendlessadventure It's the perfect plan. You can all find a camp ground in the upper peninsula where it is cool. You can stay in a tent or maybe find a cabin. It is beautiful in that area, and there is a lot to do. The weather will be cool in the 70s. When Clementine is done, Michigan is not far from the Chicago area, go pick her up, and carry on with your original plans of all four of you all traveling together from state to state. If you all go east through Ohio, and Pennsylvania, you would then end up in New England states to finally experience the fall colors, and then end up in Maine to get lobster right on the docks, and go see Mount Desert Island, Arcadia National park to see the whales. Once done with New England, as the temperature starts to get too cool, head south to the warmer states.

Was an RVer for over 40 years and know the joys and heartaches. Even managed an RV resort for a few seasons. Was full time until a hurricane ate everything and discovered that my ex didn’t pay the insurance premium. Against all odds have been rooting for you and still am. Clementine is an old girl and your travel goals are very ambitious for a newborn. 48 states in two years is sprinting a marathon. Not only is she going to need to be pampered, but you are going to miss out on a lot because you are touching base with little to do the kind of exploration that you consistently do. There are multiple solutions. There are experienced people in most campgrounds and resorts. There are “work campers” in many of them. Talk and think, talk and think, rinse and repeat. You might want to take shorter hops and literally check her over completely at the end of each hop. We tried to keep evey leg under 250 miles and usually had to tweak something every time we stopped. You might want to aim for numbers that are considerably below capacities You have an awful lot of options as long as you stay objective and flexible. One suggestion might be once the engine mechanic is done with Clementine you might want to take her to a large full service RV dealership and ask them to do a full checkup and recommendations. They are specialized for the same reason that you don’t take Ruby to a motorcycle dealership for a tuneup. Good luck 👍. Hope that things work out satisfactorily.

I wonder if this will ever be seen, but here is a crazy out of the box concept. What if this could be turned into a travel trailer. They would need a truck to tow it, but here me out. If you take out all the "vehicle" components such as the engine, transmission, dashboard and steering wheel, front seats, wheels and even the front doors. Then mount the body onto a trailer bed, fabricate siding to cover the front doors and wheel wells, and you could put a dinette where the dashboard and front seats were at. Some fabrication and work, and Clementine could be a travel trailer

At some point you’re going to have to decide when enough is enough. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to keep putting money into it. With the amount of money you’re putting into the RV you might want to think about buying a much much newer Camper trailer. I would probably think a 5th wheel or something you can pull. @@nujayfabrication8089 Yeah exactly. An LS would be a huge bill. More than the RV is worth. The engine and 4L80E plus computer plus the extra labor to fabricate the mounts, new drive shaft, exhaust, bigger radiator, etc. The answer WAS a new crate engine. Have the transmission rebuilt and upgrade to a HEI. Every bolt on part is available everywhere and any shop in North America can work on it. Any half witted nincompoop can fix alot of the things you'd run into with basic tools. These two have no sense. I have a 1974 GMC witha a crate 350 tied to a 350TH I just had rebuilt for $950.00 with a 2 year warranty. I can replace the alternator in ten minutes, wp in 30 minutes fuel pump in 10 minutes. Of course vans would take longer than a pickup but the idea is the same.

So many US travel bloggers took to RVs when the pandemic started. And so many have found the promise of cool, cheap, safe adventure unfulfilled-most recently the unlucky TravelBeans, as you well know. Even the newest RVs are a money pit, and few are meant to last more than 15 years. They’re meant to drive somewhere twice or three times a year and park, rather than gallivant across the country. If you’re into road tripping-and the USA is a great place for it-grab the Durango and hop from one cool, interesting AirBnB to the next. The small towns you’ve discovered have proved some of the best content, and you can actually park Doug in the center of town andget on with the really interesting stuff. You don’t need to lug the burden of constant home maintenance everywhere you go. Toss a tent and icebox in the back of the SUV if you crave some cheap nights off the grid. IMHO, American RV travel is cumbersome, inconvenient, not very relaxing, and...well, a bit stupid. But to each their own. You did an absolutely superb job on Clementine, but she’s a vacation home, not a full-time house. Give up? You certainly wouldn’t lose me as a subscriber if you did.

I wrote to you before with no response . I'll tell you one more time .....number one , your working with a tired engine . Don't expect much from it . Surprised it still runs . Anytime you add stress to a tired engine like with engine air , it's going to act up or crap out . This thing is going to dollar y'all to death ! If you have roof air , just get a 2500 to a 3000 watt generator and hang it on the bumper . Do the wiring yourself , it's easy . And your going to freeze inside . And answer me so I know you read this . Good luck !

Dont give up on your RV , it is a beautiful classic , it seems whenever you mix a little new tech with old or rebuild something there is some bugs to get worked out but once you do she will be the cats meow . I love that you put Ruby in the car show and it isnt silly it is much deserving of being the show and winning its another beautiful classic , I envy you two you have great taste , anyhow best wishes that Clementine is up and running soon.

That being a Chevy, worst case scenario is you have to buy a crate engine from. Chevrolet and put a Holley Sniper EFI on it. It's a little expensive but then you would have a 3 year warranty on the engine and the Holkey has a self learning computer built in. So, Clementine is not a lost cause.

You must have thrown a lot of money into that RV and my best guess is almost the value of a new/used a little bit more modern RV. From all the videos since you got the RV I have enjoyed your videos but the RV has nothing been an headache.

I also enjoyed watching and really commend them for all of the hard work. But as this money pit progressed I continued to have a bad feeling about how it would turn out. Asking a lot out of an older vehicle. Not like buying a classic car to rebuild and just trailer to car shows or do a Sunday drive with. Might have been better and safer to just buy something newer.

Hi, love your channel. I’m a vintage car and rv guy. I’ve restored numerous cars and rvs from the 70s as a hobby. Clementine is extremely sweet and it will be ok. They have issues but it can be worked out…..it just takes a while and finding the right mechanic that understands these. Don’t give up….it will all be good.

I feel for you guys. After all of the work on Clementine, it is such a shame she is still not working properly. I’m thinking it’s a good idea to make her a very lovely air bnb. Then, maybe you can buy a more reliable, newer class c or class b to travel in so that you can realize your travel plans. It will be so nice for you guys to be out there in the coming fall weather. I was looking forward to your food stops throughout the country.

It seriously makes me re-think the wisdom of taking mine to the mechanic instead of just towing it out to my property, living in it and just slowly working on it over time with no pressure to get it mobile. Would so nice to be able to drive it though! Ugh totally relate.

Get a reese hitch installed for your Durango and just find a decent pop-up trailer or a conventional trailer. A Durango can tow over 6000lbs and the average 18ft trailer or pop-up weights about 2000lbs, I would say a pop up is easier to pull and cost less, reese hitches don't cost too much to install.

Hi Alison and Eric. Norman and I feel your pain. We bought a 1977 Bedford with a Starcraft build on the back and have ploughed thousands and thousands of dollars into her. She is called "The Beast". Just when you think there is nothing left to fix she misbehaves again. She also seems to have a love affair with the RACQ (We are in Australia) Like you we have invested a lot of time, energy and money, so much so it would be hard to part with her. The upside is, and I am sure you can relate to this, everywhere we go we get stopped for photos or a chat. She is a star attraction! Chins up. Think about how much Clementine has changed your life and many others , including us. The enthusiasm and hard work that you have display has encourage many people to have a go themselves. Clementine has cost you money, however she also earns her keep. Best of all your life is never boring.

Guys, your Durango can totally tow. Even without a tow package. A tow bar and hitch might cost $200-$250. Easy to install. Bolt holes are already in the frame. Bet there is a connection for a trailer brake and lights hidden somewhere in the cargo area as well. It’s not a difficult job. I did it on my Wife’s Acura RDX. The only other things a tow package usually includes is maybe a trans cooler and better cooling on the differential. But so long as you keep the weight towed reasonable, that’s not a big deal. Your Durango is plenty capable of towing without a tow package.

Maybe the Missouri mechanic forgot to reconnect the idle air control sensor? the holley screen shows the IAC at 100 percent, it should be 2-10 percent. At 2:14 in your video the Holley monitor screen shows the idle air control (valve-sensor) at 100% !! it should be at 2 -10%.
