I know how cold it can get in that van! We used to have a 1980 Westfailia and we traveled many, many miles for about 10 years (from 2000 to 2010), but mostly always in the summer! I have an ‘84 Westy that was so slow it couldn’t get out of its own way. I had a Subaru engine swapped out so now it’s as fast as a regular car and gets twice the mileage out of the 15 gallon tank. These vans are famous for being unreliable. I think they are fun to drive. I go to parks for three or four days a week that are just one day from home. Perfect for this old man.

I’ve slept in a van in the snow. Snuggling* together with an electric blanket should help. And layers of clothing help as well. My parents had a vw camper van. Lol Thanks for sharing your winter adventure with us.

E&A - Cool VW van. I used to drive a 1963 for years, nothing special, but great. You guys probably don't know too much about how to fix old engines like that, but one thing for sure, they are actually pretty easy to do, compared to modern motors and car functions. If you get in a pinch, I'll bet you can find youtube vids with plenty of help to offer. I don't know about parts, but see what you can find. VW has always been pretty good at starting out antiquated, so parts are pretty easy to find, new or old, and I would imagine even back to '87 models, and probably before. Eric, yeah dude, shame it ain't a stick. Swayed by the wind? I remember driving in snow storms, with the front wheels headed straight, but the body of the van maybe 20 degrees off, one way or another. Not a problem, as long as you know how sail a VW van. You'll learn.

I only drove it for about 25 minutes across the city, but I did drive one! I don’t remember being as enthusiastic as you are about it…I don’t think I was impressed with its handling, a little top heavy I think. Ido like their concept. I laughed when Allison said "you can't beat a vintage vehicle . . .." For years, I drove a vintage Westfalia too, only mine was vintager: circa 1971! 🙂 Then I realized that mine was only 20 years old when I bought it. Yours is 35 years old! I just loved the pop-top, and years later, when I bought a full size Chevy van, I missed being able to stand when dressing or cooking. So what would an old Westie lover do to solve the problem of stooping over? Install a seventies-era Westie pop-top on the modern Chevy van, of course! Thankfully, it was easier than anticipated, and it works a treat! Now the Chevy van has a new name, in honor of the puzzled look on the faces of so many old Westie drivers, when they see the pop-top and realize it's out of place. The new name: WTFalia? I even cut up a Westfalia sticker and made the name official! 🙂
