Basically to the point of I was out of options I decided to try a new cam shaft. This video makes so much more sense to watch from the beginning but still interesting stuff going on in this video as well. I was ready to be over this truck so video is straight to the point. Hope you never run into the same issues!!

How many mechanics, novice or professional, would have given this much dedication to solving a problem? Right, not many. I’m with those who are glad you stuck it out, and those that felt your pain. This series was indeed addictive, like a soap opera. Stay tuned until the next episode. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏👏👏👏

So replacing the cam bearings fixed the oil pressure and then the replacement of the cam fixed the rough idle. All this work for a “rebuilt engine that was under warranty.” Best KZbin series ever made. Thanks for the journey Dex and Justin!

Your lobe explanation makes perfect sense. Just remember the lifter is pumping up to compensate for that lack of base circle lobe. That is gonna cause the valve to be open prematurely when it hit the ramp on the lobe. It's the inconsistency in valve timing throughout that was causing this. Excellent video. Made me think and I appreciate how humble you and Justin are.

I was one of the guys who "guessed" incorect cam profile, and Dex was right about me using process of elimination. I bet if you put a degree wheel on that problem cam it would measure more duration and a tighter lobe separation angle. The computer wont like that "hotter" profile without a tune.

It's a nice truck. Wish I lived closer than 5k miles. You could have fun with my #4 misfire. The plug fouls out immediately. No water in the oil. Maybe oil in the cooling system. Gonna flush and try BarsLeak in case its a head or head gasket. It's been to 3 shops already.

Man! Props to you Dex! I'm just a shade tree mechanic and amazed by your skill, knowledge and thinking ability. I would have given up long ago and ssid throw it away and stick a crate motor in it. If you read this, I'll tell you about my 2000 XJ Sport. It overheated and I paid a guy to put a new head (yeah, it was cracked) and gasket on it cuz I didnt have the time or space to do it myself. After it was all done we had a misfire that wasn't there before, so he tore it down again, blamed it on the head and returned it for a replacement. While it was torn down waiting on the replacement headn we decided (almost by chance) to pull the lifters to have a look, it did have 160k on it, but why didnt the guy do the inspection while he had the head off in the first place? This is a guy that built race engines, had his own shop and built one of the country's fastest corvette's, but he couldn'teven think to inspect other parts when he had the chance?! Well things just happen, I get it, I didn't think to suggest it either. Anyway, one of the lifeters (I think #3 cyl) was wore off at a slant you could visibly see so we instinctively pulled the cam and replaced it and new Lifter set with reman head again and were back on the road. Only thing was it now had a low end knock after just 10k miles. I was there when he put the cam in and he broke it in proper. I was happy for at least for 10k miles. But wasn't the guy's fault that did the work that it has the low end knock now. And I think he cut me a small break b/c he kinda knew he should've checked the lifters in the first place. But we talked and agreed on the price. Still I don't know if I'd go back to the same guy for any other work. You definitely went the extra mile to take care of this guy and I hope he doesn't feel the same way about you as I do for the guy that did my work. But I do think I found another mechanic and shop I can trust and have had much work done with them. Good luck, keep making videos for us all to enjoy and God Bless my friend!

I just recently found your channel. I didn't follow this whole series, but i did watch this whole video and that was an interesting problem. Basically, you're setting the valve lash based on the lowest "sunk in" part of what is supposed to be the base circle on the faulty cam. That means as soon as the cam starts ramping back up to what actually should be the correct base circle, you're already pushing on the lifter, and the valve has no choice but to open early and bleed off compression. Knowing what you know now, you probably could actually verify this by loosening the adjusters a decent amount. It would obviously be clattery, but the extra lash would have made up for the error in the base lobe diameter, and ensured the valves didn't open until the cam was actually ramping back up like it's supposed to so in theory, it should have ran fine like that, it'd just probably be noisy. Actually it would make a cool video for you to throw that back in an engine on the stand and just see how much loosening it would take to get it to run right. Thanks for sharing, and glad you got it figured out!
