I’m *reflexively* pro union. If you tell me there’s a strike, I’m automatically on the side of labor. This one is different though. What they are asking is not even sensible. When European dockworkers strike, they demand more time off due to automation or an increase in volume so they can keep working while it becomes more efficient. Our east/gulf coast ports are INSANELY slow and inefficient. I’m all about them making money, but these demands feel like a shakedown. Also- really freaking convenient that they are suddenly striking now and can hold the country hostage before an election. The union boss is a Trump toadie and it’s a lose-lose for the current administration. They’ll be hated whether they take action to stop the strike and if they don’t. I’m not saying it’s 100% manufactured, but the timing sure looks like it (oh they want payback for 2020 *now*?). But if this timing wasn’t planned, it’s a very happy accident for the Trump campaign.

I'm in a town of 600 in WNC. We homestead, so have always had a stockpile of the things we need and backs ups to the back up. During this disaster, my best preps were: gas generator able to run our well pump, stockpile of gas, solar generator, and starlink. One of the most surprising things was how quickly people devolved into madness over gas and supplies. Like within 24 hours. I had always assumed it would be maybe 2-3 days before people became nuts. My little community is awesome, every one helped from grading and repair to sharing food to make for the community. Almost everyone stockpiles as a way of life here. Fortunately, we never had to venture into the slightly larger town for supplies and deal with the craziness. We still don't have power, but kids and livestock are all well fed and safe.

Remember, it is not just the huge disasters. A few weeks ago, my daughter ended up being at the hospital with my infant granddaughter for three days. Despite repeated conversations, she did not have an EDC bag in the car, so she was stuck without food, a change of clothing, etc., for the three days. This meant the rest of us were juggling to get her the items she needed in a timely manner. I had her other children who could not go into the hospital and who could not be left alone, so I was of little assistance. If she had had a bag in the car with a change or two of clothes, and some shelf stable food and water, she would have been in a much better position. Even pouches of tuna or protein bars would have been helpful. Her thought process was, “I was within an hour of home, I didn’t need it.” Guess who has a bag in her car now? It is always the little things that we don’t plan on that create much bigger issues. Being prepared is critical, even if you are just going a few blocks from home.

We discovered we were not prepared, our son and daughter in law were at the hospital for pre-op instructions. Not knowing where at least paper towels were, it was stressful to find something to stop the bleeding. We now carry a first aide and edc bag in our car.

Here are 3 lessons learned. 1) Generac generators are amazing and I will be buying stock in them. 2) make friends with your neighbors before you need them. 3) One of the things I heard frequently is that of the people in Asheville, even the people who had supplies stocked up couldn’t have planned for the flash flooding and mudslides. The only sure prep is making sure you’re on God’s side and living in His will before the day of disaster happens.

@@lizdavidhopper8924 Hi there! We save and reuse plastic containers (milk, soda, water, etc.) to store water for our plants and flushing toilets (flushing only when necessary). As far as with electric we have a small gas/propane generator we used to go back and forth to our refrigerator and deep freeze (but we still lost food). For light we used lanterns (both battery and kerosene) candles and headlamps. For warmth we bundled up. We used a small camp stove to cook food and to heat water. These are all very short term solutions and we realized quickly we need a better plan and a bigger generator (especially for heating because our pelleted stove). We need more stored water as well. We shopped around and found a Generac generator that will run our entire farm (including our well) and we'll also install a wood stove. We had to give up several personal possessions to buy it they are costly) but the sacrifice is well worth it. Keep prepping! Things are going to get worse. God bless.

I live on the Tennessee side effected by the flooding. I knew it was gonna be bad due to the rain we had AND the tropical depression dropping rain in the mountains. It’s always a flash flood and/or landslide hazard.(also thanks to Ryan Hall that your channel introduced me to because I wouldn’t have know about how severe it would be). I charged my portable power banks. Did some basic preps the Thursday before the SHTF. I warned my boyfriend in Asheville who wasn’t taking it seriously. He’s okay btw after crying for him and my friends for two days. I’m okay I was on high ground on Friday while I worked my shifts. Y’all I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this. I knew the risks for my area but what I didn’t factor in was climate change bringing in the upmost extreme events. The hospital in Erwin was in a 1 in 100 year flood plain. I’ve heard from a local meteorologist that this was 1 in 5,000 year chance of happening. Yeah. Prepare for the absolute worst for your particular area. Rehash your risks. We lost most of our main routes from NC to TN. Is your place hard to get to? It’s almost been a week and they are still trying to reach people with supplies. I’ve worked with a lot of people in my service area which were in the way of the floods. Idk if they are alive. I work the elderly and disabled. Some of which lived in near the affected bodies of water. Some lost power for their medical equipment for days. Trying to keep my head straight during this was hard. I can only hope they got out in time and got the things they needed.

I got hit by a tornado in June of 2022; my prepping supplies really helped get me through. It was 3 days before anyone could break through the destruction to get to my house. The tornado did not destroy my house, but it damaged it and destroyed everything else; it left me with no power, water. for a couple weeks, and cell service for days. I live directly beneath that line, in your map, just off lake Erie. Add in polar vortexes, blizzards, from the north and derechos from the midwest, and you'll understand why extreme weather is my top concern in risk analysis. I also live in the forest, so wildfires are also on the menu. One thing I learned a long time ago is to keep an axe or hatchet in your pack if you have to retreat into your attic to get above rising flood waters, or escape a tornado damaged house, to break through the roof. Another thing I can suggest is when a hurricane/extreme flood event is being warned, tie your boat, canoe or kayack directly to your house, within reach of the door. I live on a creek and have seen the water come up over 10 feet in a few minutes. During Agnes I tied a rope line across my yard to a solid tree uphill, and tied my row boat to it, pulled hand over hand to get out. Flood water is extremely powerful, and always full of debris. I thank you for this channel; it has saved my life on several occasions.

@oliebolie5064 You can listen but not broadcast without a license. The license is not that hard to get. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a network of ham radio operators that cover the entire United States and Southern Canada. It is designed to be operated for emergencies. Maybe you can connect with them or at least find their frequencies to hear information if there is an emergency. I know when I lived in Oakland, California, the ham radio station up on Temple Hill was coordinating with the government to act as the main station to send and receive messages in emergencies.

My kids and husband tease me that I’m pepper. - like I’m crazy. What they don’t realize is I’m collecting food and supplies for an emergency like Helene and learning to be self sufficient. I don’t need all my supplies at the moment and now I am equipped to help someone else in need and restock. I started following you a couple years ago because of your sensible prepping advice. I love your science based testing of products and you motivated me to plant some of my food. I have my first vegetable garden- albeit a bit of a flop! Thank you!

I saw a news video where social media has caused panic buying of water and toilet paper, paper towels. Fortunately we in WNC aren’t going crazy buying that stuff since it’s all made in USA and not affected by the port strike. But we do have other problems and it’s amazing all the help ppl from all over have been giving us. Iheart radio wwnc and 12 other stations are simulcasting what is going on. One lady was so upset because she hadn’t heard from her brother who lives near us and 30 ppl showed up at his house to make sure he is ok(including my daughter) ppl have been doing wellness checks because emergency workers are still doing searches with cadaver dogs. Power is still out for most and water. Cell is spotty and completely out at times but some gas stations and stores are starting to open and if you can get out there has been water and meals but we missed them but still have some food to eat and solar chargers which were a lifesaver along with 5 gallon water jug.

Just an encouraging word for those starting their preparedness journey: I think for most the cost of building up supplies is the biggest overwhelming factor when starting prepping. Just keep in mind that knowledge and planning are totally free. Learn everything you can on what to prep, how to store those preps, and what preps would benefit you or your family the most. This will keep you from going down the rabbit hole of buying gear and supplies that you don't need or will probably never use. The gear side of prepping can spiral quickly. Once you have the knowledge, plan. Put together an evac binder with critical info and documentation. Develop an evacuation plan or if it gets really bad a bug out plan. Develop and document all probably disasters for your area. Natural first then Man made. While you may not be able to purchase the supplies just yet you can at least have your ducks in a row on what to do during a disaster. This is, for the most part, free.

Update Savannah, Ga we had a lot of tree and roof damage, and a loss of power. You can stuff your washer with ice before storm when it melts it just drains out. Save 2 liter bottles 3/4 full of water. And place them in your freezer. When them storm start put half of them in the fridge. Before them storm bring in you solar lights to use for candles. I recommend a Biolite camping stove. You will have plenty of sticks in your for fuel. And this stove uses the heat to make electricity for your cell phones.

Being in coastal NC, the prepping ideas we get from this channel are always helping us through hard times. It was overshadowed by Helene, but 10 days prior we received 20 inches of rain overnight from an “unnamed” tropical storm. We live in the Southport Oak Island area and we were cut off from the rest of our county. All roads were either underwater or roads were washed away. The good side is that we didn’t have power loss like other areas.

Because of you and content creators like you, I was able to get a number of things and survive in a cold RV with a little diligence and common sense also a little MacGyver things together and old-fashioned grit washing in cold water. I do wish you would review some of the cheaper generators that are available. The ones you see on eBay or ones that are refurbished. Don’t have much money. Also solar panels that you can join together that are budget friendly over time. I can’t afford thousands and thousands of dollars worth of items. I’m glad you finally did a dollar store First aid kit. I’ve known about that for years. It helped out a lot of people also old fashion 70s or 80s gas can nozzles with the new ones not working so well. Chris thanks again for all you do. Hopefully you get my message Canadian prepper and a few others don’tacknowledge situations like mine. There is a man pinball preparedness down south Tennessee.
