Economists are saying tarrifs won't work. Tarrifs aren't a penalty for the other country. They are charged to the domestic company that imports the goods - and they cant afford that, so they pass the increase on to the consumer. SO.....your $40,000 pickup truck that is built in Mexico will have a $50,000 price tag after a 25% tarrif. The $10,000 increase just goes to the US Government. The same government that refuses to negotiate prescription drug prices, won't offer health care to the people, isn't hiring back seasonal NPS staff, wants to cut Social Security, etc.....
@mtnbiker1411 күн бұрын
My example is also only the first layer of the impact. Also, imagine what this does to the demand for used vehicles. Demand goes up. Supply doesn't. Prices go up. Within a few months to a few years, many people can't afford most reliable cars options - new or used.

I think it’s important to note that as tariffs cause certain companies to have to raise their prices because the raw materials are more expensive, all the companies in that sector will raise prices. They will see that people are willing to pay those higher prices and raise things accordingly. This happened with groceries during the pandemic, it wasn’t that groceries should’ve stayed as expensive as they were or have stayed. They don’t cost that much now, but companies are greedy and there’s no regulations to force them to readjust back down to lower prices. Therefore, even made in America products will probably cost more because they know they can charge more. So expect your entire life to be anywhere from 10% to 30% more expensive within the next six months.

What is not mentioned is, ‘Short term pain for long term gain’. America has been dumped upon by various countries with low quality low cost goods for the American dollar. These low cost goods often subsidize by governments and produced by low wage workers compete with American companies and American workers. Eventually the American companies are driven out of business, the supply is reduced, and the price goes up. Tariffs counter these predatory practices by these other countries and American companies and workers continue to produce at a decent wage. These American workers and the American companies pay taxes and the government’s revenue is secure and often increases.

Most Americans are unwilling or unable to make financial sacrifices or do without certain things in order to force manufacturing back to the US. My 4 year old asked the other day why (almost) all his toys say made in China. I told him it's almost impossible to find toys made here in the USA, everything he wants is made in China.... even my 4 year old knows that's stupid!
@aliciaswaringen573214 күн бұрын
About 40 years ago I started my own business making toys, dolls and puppets. I hand made them all and their clothes. It was hard to make it work because toys from China were so cheap, and I couldn't make a good hourly wage, not enough to support myself and still sell at competitive prices. I switched to making clothing and did that full time for 14 years. The toys I see for sale made in the US are generally higher quality, made of real wood or cloth and don't have lots of technology components, which tends to be less attractive to kids as well. Lots of kids want electronic gadgets these days instead of handmade wood or cloth toys.😢

Most of these fools would rather see us slaves to China than to risk their temporarily hurting their prices, if they're even put into place. Not true! (My 6 year old until recently had only wooden toys. Made in the US or Europe. Keeping plastics out of our home has had such good benefits!!! AND we are not swimming in clutter. Now that he is older, mindful plastics such as legos & magna tiles have come home too. It’s all good. The US spends way too much in toys compared to other developed nations. ) Let’s start being mindful of what we consume. (The elite wants us to buy more, work unsustainable hours. It’s them, not China that we should pay attention to.)
@dordan998712 күн бұрын
I am curious why you think it's stupid. Many toys are still made in the us, but they are more expensive. The reason you and your little one see all the toys you have are made in China is because you chose to buy the cheaper toys. By the way, I do the exact same thing, because, like you, I prefer the cheaper product on average. This makes perfect sense. You can argue many things against importing toys but the reality is we the consumers chose imported toys more. This could be a interesting thing to bring up in a simplified manor to your child.

Some of the things I've purchased in preparation of tariffs and increased prices: •Canning lids •Another set of water storage containers (I've been slowly growing my water storage capabilities and decided not to hold off and to grab another 20 gallons before the new year.) •Extra water filters •A couple of extra power bank solar chargers •a few extra charging cords (mine was fraying so I decided to buy now instead of holding off and picked up an extra, just in case) •Over the counter medicines (ie: Tylenol, Advil, etc.) •Mylar long-term storage bags •Coffee & Sugar (I have food preps, but have added an extra bag each per grocery run to bolster my supplies in specifically these two items) •My favorite makeup items (cosmetics are primarily imported) I tried to focus on items that are either not produced in the States or that are dependent on imported raw materials, that will be useful whether or not we see a direct impact on proposed tariffs, and that either won't go bad or can be stored for long-term. I'm thankful that I have the ability and means to ramp up quickly now. I realize not everybody will be able to do so.

Some additional info on lumber: I work for a fortune 500 company that can swing the US lumber price by 20% pending our order volume. The price of lumber will primarily depend on what kind of lumber you use. Yes, canada exports the US a LOT of lumber but if you arent utilizing their fir, spruce, jackpine, or birch, chances are youll be more affected if tariffs hit places like South America, NZ, or the mid pacific islands where most of sustainable 'consumer' fast growing pine species are generally grown and harvested. The thing that will go up the most is the OSB products that canada produces, so if you can stockpile sheeting, go for it. And, if you pretty much only use Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) which is the standard for studs and such in the US, youll be happy to see prices normalize at the hardware store while jobs are created in the US south harvesting mature SYP crops that are now competitive with imported dimensional lumber. Good video! Appreciated the alert without excessive alarm bells.
@wendymarples838815 күн бұрын
Just a thought. When building with lumber, it is important to consider the strength of a fast-growing softwood tree vs. a slow-growing tree. The slow-growing trees with the rings close together are definitely stronger. This is where the cheaper, warmer-climate trees aren't ALWAYS the best choice. It depends on the use.
