The guy who put an ad in a paper to eat a person is based on a real guy who did it named Armin Meiwes. He was German, and did find a volunteer (Bernd Brandes) who agreed as long as he could eat a part of himself first. They both dined on Bernd's severed man part before Armin ended Bernd and ate portions of him. Rammstein made a song about it called "Mein Teil".

This show is so hard to get people to watch but it is unexpectedly brilliant and hilarious. Not a second of time is wasted in this show-- every 5 seconds of screen-time has some purpose you can gleam from it. It reminds me of trying to get my friends to try and play Harvest Moon 64. It was such a great game. "Okay guys you gotta try this game!" "What's it about" "uhh.. well, you run a farm and-" "Ahh and you get attacked by aliens and have guns and stuff?" "...no, you grow crops. but you also have animals! like cows and chickens. You brush them and talk to them every day and they like you!" "and... they... fight for you, or?" "No, no, no. you can get milk from cows and eggs from chickens and then sell them. Eventually you'll have money to get better tools so you can farm faster and..." "okay but what else can you do?? it can't just be farming?" "No, of course not. You can romance the local girls and you can forage for berries, and upgrade your house so you can cook some great food, and fishing! There's a lot to be said about fishin why are you running away from me?!" harvest moon related story: I first rented it at blockbuster video and it had a save file at day 1 so I just assumed this was the default and played on. I did everything a normal and went to the village and bought every upgrade I could and bought everything I felt like and as many seeds as possible and went about my business making the best farm that was impossible. I had to return it to the store unfortunately and then a week later when I could convince my mudder to let me rent it again, It unfortunately wasn't the same cartridge, so I restarted... and... it turns out some legend had created a fresh save at day 1 and just loaded a gameshark and cheated infinite coins (or 999,999 or whatever) into the account and nothing else.. and then saved and quit so the next guy would have basically infinite gold in his playthrough. I had no idea. It wasn't until I got the game for christmas one year and played for months that I got back to the point that I got in that one week and was able to actually "finish" the game. (everyone gives up at like year 10 lol, and I got ocarina of time and majoras mask after that...)

The actor who plays Johan (the German) also plays a German officer in Band of Brothers. He's the one Winters allows to keep his sidearm when he surrenders. Philip Rham. The irony is, he's playing Germans, but he's actually English, born in the UK. The cannibal character he's playing here is based on a true character. Armin Meiwes. A German cannibal who placed an advert on the internet looking for a willing victim. Although Armin was a murderer as well as a cannibal.

This group of kids is the era of my younger brother. I was busy in college and didn't really focus too much on the culture then; being not too much different than the 70s but I enjoy catching this series for the 1st time with you, seeing how you react to the culture, enjoying the music. I believe in interviews the showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, have said they wanted to bring the magic of that time back into people's minds and it was a hit for that as much as for the story line. I do enjoy how you and Ash love movies from that era too. He's a lucky man. Great reaction Hannah!

"There's somebody at the door" is a reference to UK kids entertainer Rod Hull and Emu, he had a show on TV in the 80s, he did a dance as he went to answer the door :)
