The British ration packs have improved so much over the years, a friend who was in the army in the early 70's said they were called rat packs because only desperate rats would want to eat them but by the first year in Afghanistan the Americans were bartering things for bits of the British packs. He retired after that so we watched this together after I found it and he is tempted to get a pack just to see what they are eating now, each unpackaging he kept saying damn that looks good, you made an old man smile today.

The reason UK Ration packs have Tabasco sauce is due to the first Gulf War. British troops would trade our vastly superior 24 hour ration packs with US troops for various supplies. Whilst UK troops were not impressed with the US MRE they did like the little bottles of Tabasco sauce that came with them. To that end they would ask for the Tabasco sauce bottles, this fed back to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and it was decided to include them in UK ration packs.

@@SeanHendy :D they aren't wrong! it's not cheese really, it's 'cheese flavored spread' and it's delicious... and horrible and I hate it, but I love it. It's complicated okay!? I used to work with the Brits quite a bit in many different places, when we "scoffed" that's Brit speak for eat we never got these packs so MREs or local food or the DFAC was the deal. But man the Tea! I got schooled on the proper way to brew tea! Most guys did it by adding the tea bag first and very few took it white (added milk). We seemed to Brew up often it became kinda comforting no mater what shit state you where in we would have a cuppa. I was often the tea bitch since I was the token "Yank" on the team. Good times!

I was in the Army cadets in the early 1970´s. When we went on battle camp training we were given old ration packs from the 50´s & 60´s. We loved them. My favourite was the tube of condensed cream (bit smaller than a tube of toothpaste) mixed with the tube of strawberry jam. I joined the Army in the late 70´s and while i liked the newer ration packs they never seemed to be as good as the "out of Date" rations they gave us as Cadets. There was a suet beef steak pudding in one ration pack that the guys called "babies heads" pudding.......cant remember why. Good to see the MOD has moved to normal tea bags, we used to get this monster tea bag with bromide in it, strong as hell but lasted for 3 or 4 cups if you kept it.

I served in the British Army between 1971 and 1982 and our ration packs were a bit good, for the most part. Here is a list, the main meals were all were large tins: chicken curry, chicken in white sauce, steak and kidney pudding, red salmon (I used to swap my tin of salmon for three tins of S and K pudding), bacon roll, skinless sausages, steak and onion casserole, mashed potato powder (had to add cheese and butter to make it edible), tinned processed cheese (an aquired taste), tinned butter, Tiffin chocolate bar, fruit flavoured sweets, dog biscuits (bloody awful), tube of condensed milk, tube of strawberry jam (spread the last two on the dog biscuits).

It's so weird. Germany, Japan and the UK. The countries so wrecked after ww2 we lived off of garbage food for decades because we were so poor (exaggeration for the lulz don't @ me) Yet Germany and Japan never gained that reputation. Admittedly Germany and Japan had the full power of the American economy thrown at them to rebuild. I dunno whether it's because we weren't as wrecked or were too proud but it wasn't until we joined the EEC/EU that we started to really recover in the 70s and 80s.

I remember the compo (compound) rations (UK) from twenty years ago. Think they were emergency rations for if the mess could not bring up hot food, and the standard field rations were gone. They were 24 hour, but in a much smaller box than you showed. I could get a pair of the compos with a pair of field rations with all my kit, The compo rations were munch more energy dense, think fat and sugar, but similar components to what shown here. Sweets, 3 or4 energy bars *2. 2 teas, 2 coffees, but 8 of those sugar packets and 4 creamer. 2 cold drinks. Then 2 heated main meals and breakfast. But most of the bits were in mini cans. 3 foil packs of biscuits, 1 fruit 2 savory. These could be resealled. Zip lock. Plus cheese spread, + jam or marmalade + a pair of meat spreads. These packs had a micro can opener, 5 wind proof matches, these could be lit under water and burn for about 15 seconds. Then a pack of waxed matches. Mini Sachets of salt and pepper. Lastly water sterilisation tabs *4 plus loo roll and wet wipes and a fire starter block, you could quarter. Could start a wood fire with this easy peasy. Cooking was normally done on a methanol stove kit, meth supplied separately.

Ow, ow, ow. Friendly tip for you Americans: Tea bag first. Then hot water. When the tea is brewed, remove the tea bag. If you take sugar or honey, now is when you put it in. Then, and only then, put in the milk. (Milk is an emulsifier and blocks the holes in the tea bag, so you end up with a pale, weak tasting tea). It also cools the tea, so do that last to adjust to a safe temperature and to taste. No different from instant coffee, really, just takes a bit longer. Enjoy the tea. Simples.

You would die if you saw the way we make tea on the East Coast;) Four cups of water with 3 tea bags in microwave for 5 minutes. Let it cool down remove tea bags, add lots of ice and small amount of sugar. I usually order half sweet/unsweet tea in town because the South loves sweet tea and I prefer mildly sweet.

Great looking ORP friend ! Awesome review sir. Steve is A class act. I also received ration from him, to be reviewed soon. It and one more from B temple, I am saving for the last ones. Both bucket list items. I have tried most of the items in your ration, all were excellent. Yours appears that way as well. You divided the meals perfectly, and all components looked delicious. I love the curried rice. I have had it twice. I am quite fond of the cheese biscuits also. The cola drink, is, interesting, agreed. Not bad, just, different, like A flat cola. Bean and pasta salad, looks awesome as well. Tabasco rocks !! Once again, great ration and review Sticky. Peace, John.

I would say this pack is amazing BUT... needs: cheese and/or pate option, instant noodles and/or instant soup, and a fish option somewhere on it's menu range. The Spanish and Italians have sardines which are compact, delicious and is a delicious breakfast protein hit.

Interesting to see the difference between these and the ones I had when I was in. I had the early versions in the early 90's. I see they did away with the cheese and pate. I guess they learned they didn't hold up well in heat or cold.

Love the channel by the way just subbed to it. I’m going to have to get one now to see what our lads and girls are eating. By the way your doing the tea wrong and its better to use semi skimmed or half fat milk so use actual milk I know its for the experience but a proper cuppa needs real milk, just fill the cup with boiling water with the tea bag in leave about half an inches worth of room for the milk let it sit for a minuet and use a tea spoon to squeeze the tea bag against the cup to get the most flavour out of it also before you put the hot water in put 2 teaspoons of sugar in the cup with the tea bag and after 1 min do the squeeze thing take out the tea bag and add milk serve and enjoy preferably with some chocolate hobnobs or digestives for dunking if you can get them over there. Enjoy, peace brother see you on the next one.
