Well, well, what have we here then? We are going a little more upmarket today than usual, but the outlay is amply rewarded by a stunningly simple flieger. I'm not sure I would have done anything differently, even though I could have. Sometimes simple is good. Cheers, Jody

It’s always mind blowing how German engineers can make something that on first glance is plain simple. But as you begin to look at it it just radiates a quality that’s hard to explain in words

For me the Fleiger needs to be either the A Dial or the B Dial. If I were to go small seconds with that awesome movement I would choose the Marine Original

Good review, Jody. Hope you enjoy it. I got a flieger (not a Stowa), and what you don't really take in until you have one on your wrist day in, day out is how beautiful the blued steel hands are.

These Stowas are excellent. They do the case grinding in-house, and in person you can tell that the bushing and lines on these are a step above many other watch cases.

It's a great looking watch. I can't afford it. German watches with Swiss movements do not come cheap. I think this is one of the best examples I have seen. Plus the way it wears it does not seem too big like many of them are. Tisell makes something similar but I don't know the price and it is always sold out when I look. Great review though. I love where they put the second hand.

Nice review on a fine watch (although I'm not too keen on the subdial). If you have $1200 to spend on a Flieger, Stowa is the watch to buy. If you have $400, buy a Laco Augsburg auto. You get the same "experience" of a Flieger for 1/3 the price. The Laco has a sapphire crystal and is rated at 5ATM. All stainless and 42mm.

I love the original fliegers and Stowa is arguably one of the more desirable manufacturers of these time pieces that is somewhat affordable. For me, the ultimate is the IWC Big Pilot (but far, far beyond my means). As you said Jody, the Stowa is not cheap either. What to do for a teacher-flieger fanatic? Last year, I bought a Laco 42mm Aachen (type B, under $400 on sale at Long Island Watch) and a San Martin (38mm type A, $120), both sporting sapphire crystals. While I agree that the Stowa is more striking and contains a far-superior movement to the Miyota 821-sourced Laco 21 and the NH35 in my Type A, both my watches were less than half the price of the Stowa. The bronze San Martin is aging beautifully and, given the sterile dial, garners much flieger-type interest. The Laco offers much of the same authenticity and quality as the Stowa, even though I do like the look of the Stowa even more than the Laco (which I adore). My favourite Pilot watch? The Hamilton Day Date Pilot (a-la Interstellar). After all, it has gone where no other pilot watch has ever been! 🙄😁

Price aside (or especially in light of it), it seems like a simple watch with a hand-winding movement could be a bit thinner.
@ZachBie

Brian G this to my understanding is a movement that is as made to be used in pocket watches. Stowa has other models that are thinner, 8-9mm.

😍😍😍I love Stowa, Sinn and my grail a Damasko. The Germans seem to just get it right, lusted after a Sinn 103 for years then tried it on to find it way too thick. The Stowa I lust after now is the Marine Original but I pretty much love them all that Type A been another winner. They should be twice the price, if IWC still make one it will be for sure. Will it be twice that watch... I doubt it! So glad you appreciate them too Jody.

It would be interesting if you could have a look at a Dekla. They are a novel german company that makes fliegers. Cases, heat blued hands and dials are apparently done in-house, and theres a choice of 2824-2 or 2801 all for under 500€. Great deal if they are any good, but there are few opinions online on them. A WUS topic reports a very reflective crystal, but who knows, maybe they have improved on that.

thanks for this. I've been bouncing around different mfgs to see which would be the best proper flieger for a reasonable price. Hard to deny Stowa has one of the strongest propositions given its history and build.. and the ability to customize if you so choose. I was also considering a non-traditional flieger style watch. I've seen so many classic A & B dials, you really can't tell one brand from another..so, to be a little more distinct and add a little character, I was also considering a small seconds hand also. If not from Stowa like you have here, Archimede makes a pretty cool one in nearly the same fashion.. but, what I did like about the Achimede was it was not only less expensive, but I believe all (or more of) the details, including the small seconds, are lumed. And, it's made of a good steel quality and from Germany.
