I’m testing out a later version of the Ginfull Hall effect joystick. It was sold as V5 and does have quite a few changes from previous versions I’ve looked at. I will look at the delays associated with the Hall effect sensor. I'll look at the gamepad tester results from one of the joysticks installed in a DualSense controller.

Thank you so much. I just replaced both my sticks and they are working great now. I was a little confused about how you got to test it with the board outside the controller but figured out that I just needed to connect the battery to test it. What I also realized is that the hall effect sticks don't have the static friction that the potentiometer strip has, so it feels quite a bit smoother.

The v5 just came out, they weren’t on the market 10 months ago, you likely have a ginful v1 or v2, but even the older ginful versions were already solving jitter issues and stuff, these are just slightly more refined specifically for the dualsense. Doesn’t really matter now though which one you put in now with the new calibration software out. You can even get away without the circularity circuit board that was super complicated and tedious to install. Glad to hear you’re going 10 months strong on ginfuls though. I have 2 extremerate fully custom controllers I can’t use right now because the stick drift is so bad on them. Cheers

Honestly unless you’re selling them online to people who know wtf a Hall effect even is. I doubt the average consumer will have any idea the difference. If they did Sony and Microsoft would have upgraded them a long time ago because it’s clear they haven’t because of planned obsolescence knowing they’ll continue to make profits every time the average gamer has to replace it with a new one. If you can get a bunch of cheap stick drift controllers though you could still get some return for fixing them either way. My recommendation and there’s someone in my city I’ve seen doing it, is just grab an extremerate rear kit with maybe some cool coloured shell replacement and sell them as a custom pro controller for like 75% of an dualsense edge controllers cost. You’ll move those all day and the kits aren’t that pricey or hard to install. Good luck

Great video. After seeing your review I'll be swapping out my previous gen hall sticks with these. And I'll be recommending your video to others who might want hall effect joysticks. It's great that they keep refining these hall effect joysticks to make them better and better. It definitely beats buying a new controller every couple of months due to stick-drift. Also there is a kit for the DualSense Edge joystick modules but a calibration board needs to be used until someone can get the software calibration to work with the Edge. Currently that's just for DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers.

@syn80

To me it would seem like that larger, different shaped magnet was a key to improving the joysticks along with tweaks to the code on the hall effect chip. If the K-Silver & Favor Union still have the older small rectangular magnet I'm confident in assuming they will be worse. Unless they somehow make up for it on the hall chip.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 hopefully it's more than a copy of previous hall-effect joysticks with the only difference being their brand/logo on them. have you seen the Ginfull hall-effect sensors? they are mint colored but have a small rectangular magnet (maybe a bit longer) you can buy just the sensors and you fit them onto a ALPS joystick that you already have.

For anyone actually wondering about the “delay” I took the time to actually install these and tested them in game and there was no difference that I could spot. They did not feel slower despite the fact that a computer could spot the difference. It COULD just be me as this is a trial of one person but as far as I can tell you won’t even feel a performance decrease. And they have better circularity as mine were firmly at 2.1% avg error compared to the potentiometers which were all at around 12%
@codywoodward
@codywoodward 21 күн бұрын
I may be missing it because your testing data is a bit complicated for me to fully understand, but just for the hobbiest modders out there can break it down for me/us a little more basic on the delay differences? Like potentiometer delay is xx ms left to right and ginful v5 is xx ms left to right. Like just basic simple statistics sort of thing? Thanks for the content man it’s amazing and super helpful for a lot of people out here.
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 20 күн бұрын
The potentiometer delay is only dependent on the capacitance on the output of the potentiometer. The Hall effect joysticks will have some of that delay plus the signal processing delay of the Hall sensor. The Ginfulls have an asymmetric delay time depending on which way the axis is moved. The others I've tested seem to be pretty balanced. The slew delay amounts to the minimum time it would take for the output of the Hall sensor to move over the entire range of the axis, no matter how fast the mechanical axis was moved.

From what I understand, they will only work specifically on a PS5 and PS4 (there is a version of this module for the PS4), due to the fact that it is not possible to calibrate the center of the module like on the v3 and the software for calibration is required? I ask because I have a Wii U pro controller and an 8bitdo pro 2 that I wanted to replace with these v5 hall effect modules, but I believe that as it is not possible to calibrate the controller it would be better to get a v3?

@@metalplasticelectronics354 fair enough. They're quite tricky to install, but the recent V5 revisions seem more managable to install/remove as they use an FPC instead of fibreboard for the driver board. I've got a few on order (but I can't tell if mine are gonna be reseller clones as Jun Zheng isn't selling directly from his own merchant account to UK and Europe anymore). The calibration can almost be done on the fly after install and reassembly by inputting a button/combo as you power on/plug in the controller. I've managed to get as low as 3% error on the circularity testing for both of the Dualsense installs I've completed so far. But I had no idea delay issues and tests were a thing for hall effect sticks until watching this.

Can you explain to me about the delay you mentioned in hall effect vs potentiometer sensor?
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 29 күн бұрын
Probably not well. The only delay for the potentiometer joystick will be the RC time delay of the electrical circuit. It is likely somewhere in the 10s of microseconds. The different Hall effect sensors all have additional delays with them. And depending on the sensor's output impedance it will have more or less of the same RC time delay. So the Hall effect sensor is going to have a slower response time. It's just how slow is too slow.
@KNIFEDEFIANT

@@metalplasticelectronics354 So you know how mouse and keyboards have pollrate and most run at 500-1000hz effecting input lag? Some custom gaming controllers run at 1000hz (Just throwing a kind of random fact out there). Anyways if you had two identical controllers one has potentiometer sticks and the other had hall effect sticks. If you played plus tested both controllers on a shooter game aiming and looking left to right, would hall effect joysticks stay the same, increase, or decrease the default input lag on controller when looking and aiming around? Would it be by a noticeable amount or make almost no difference?
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 29 күн бұрын
I don't know what the polling rate is on the DualSense. I would doubt it sends data to the PS5 much more than 60 times per second. If someone knows how often the DualSense sends a packet of data to the PS5, would be nice to know. Once the delay with the Hall effect is below around 10 milliseconds I think it would be very difficult to tell which one is which.

@@syn80 we do have e-commerce to buy from but only if there are seller, repair shops here are trash - at least the console related one - the best I can find is some random technictian offer ONLY the replacement service using the hall effect modules, they don't even sell it themselves. Most if not all console related shops/repair shops (big to small) don't even know about the calibration tool that microsoft put out for the normal xbox controller let alone the calibration tool for dualschock 4 and dualsense. Maybe because I am not looking hard enough, but even controller facebook groups (yes, my country still mainly use facebook) don't even about any of the calibration tools.

Maybe from next version they can make joystick modular so people can change joystics sensors easily without all the soldering n stuff

@@originsmaster8140 that was due to the ps2 having a dvd player and how easy it was to pirate. you could literally use a boot disc and then play whatever you wanted on dreamcast. sucks cause i always felt like sega were the best at creating good consoles with great games

Would you say the delay time is comparable to potentiometers? I don’t really play FPSs too much so the absolute fastest time is not a must for me, but every now and then I play with my brother when he can who’s currently serving in Pakistan. So I probably wouldn’t notice a very slight difference.

These have a slightly different feel than a potentiometer joystick, and I think the difference is from the delay that is caused by the filtering of the sensor output. But for these in this video, it is very slight.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 so if I wanted to swap them out myself, I should not really notice a change? As I said I’ll only be playing cod once or twice a month. The feel I can get used to, but what I was to know is am I gonna try to aim and see a half second delay? Because if it’s a delay difference of less than 50ms, I really don’t think I can even consider it a delay since I’m not gonna notice a significant amount of time between input and result.

@@metalplasticelectronics354hey just wanted to say I actually ended up buying and installing these and in game I could not actually spot the difference between these and the potentiometers ones. If there is a delay, is so tiny that I could not actually see or feel it with the naked eye. Thank you so much. I was able to very very easily do the replacement myself despite never before using a soldering iron, all because of your videos.
