G2G in general is just marketing, it's only half of the equation. Signal processing lag is the determining factor for how responsive a monitor feels, whereas G2G is mostly a measure of ghosting. The total lag (G2G + signal processing lag) on many IPS monitors are actually less than their TN counterparts.

Hi Jay, good to see more content on ultrawide. I picked up a 29inch 2560x1080 more budget oriented LG last year and it's perfect for my professional editing needs and gaming. Couldn't go back to 16:9. It cost me about £250 and is IPS with Freesync and although it's about 5ms response time it's in no way ghosty or suffers from any lag that I can tell! Definitely recommended.
@Liiineeepiiieeeceee6 жыл бұрын
Isn't VA notorious for insane ghosting? Why did you frame it in a way that makes it seem like IPS is actually the one suffering from it most? So is there no ghosting what so ever on this panel then?

13:11 According to www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-vast-curved-gaming-monitor it's 100% sRGB *not* Adobe RGB. sRGB and Adobe RGB are two different standards. Adobe RGB is about 30% larger then sRGB meaning that you get a lot more colours (especially more blues and greens) then sRGB can show. Pretty much all modern monitors can do 100% sRGB but those generally just do 70% of AdobeRGB give or take... If this monitor had 100% Adobe RGB too as well as the other specifications mentioned and was colour accurate then by all means I'd love to buy it. As is however I think I'm going to wait for LG or someone to come out with a proper 100% Adobe RGB monitor. LGs calibration tends to be one of the best on the market for this kind of monitors. There's currently 3 monitors I'm considering gaming on. LG 32UD99-W Samsung C27HG70QQ And Samsung C49HG90DM although the later is 1080x3440 so too low resolution for my taste...
@KjKase6 жыл бұрын
Just a warning, I bought this panel and the 2ms response time with G2G is in BEST CASE SCENARIOS ONLY... The ghosting is absolutely atrocious and VERY noticeable at times. It's still a good monitor for the price, but don't expect to get these great response times all the time. I find when I see a very saturated color or dark/black shade moving across the screen there's a good half inch smear/trail behind it.. You don't always see these very heavy saturated colors in games but when you do, it screams at you with this monitor. But like I said, it's still a good monitor for the price, but be aware, they are a little disingenuous with the whole 2ms g2g response time. You get what you pay for and there are some instances where you will notice this smearing/trailing of heavy colors but it's not all that often. I'm surprised Jay somehow didn't notice this, but maybe he really didn't see any instances of this in his tests..

Jay, how about an 'idiots guide to contemporary monitor technology' or similar? Being into gaming of course and, as I get further and further into videography/content creation, I'm becoming more and more interested in learning about the differences in modern monitors, how these different technologies work, and what a lot of the specs are describing & what they represent. That would be extraordinarily helpful to myself and I'm sure many others, as monitors are talked about/reviewed quite a bit in this niche, but no one really goes in depth about this stuff, leaving me thinking "oh, those specs are awesome! ...I think..." That said, solid review as always, and a very impressive sounding product in spite of my rather shallow knowledge about the subject. I mean, DAMN that thing must be overbuilt what with how hard you were hitting it!

The LG 34UC79G is only an inch smaller. But has 144hz and every feature this one has. Plus it’s LG and notable brand as opposed to Massdrop unknown brand. @Voltaic3146 жыл бұрын
100% agree it's way better. the only reason to choose this panel is really just the extra view space / aspect ratio.
@LycanWitch6 жыл бұрын
The issue with it being 21:9 at only 34/35" is that it's equivalent to the height of a 27" monitor. Just a stretched out 27". While the 32" Samsung is taller.. So while a 21:9 monitor may be wider by 4 inches, it feels squished if you ever used a 16:9 32" or higher screen which usually have a height difference of approximately 2+ inches. Here's some panel sizes: 16:9 32" Panel: 17 x 29 21:9 35" Panel: 15 x 33 Plus the usual issues you hear with 21:9 such as all youtube and most video content online being 16:9 means black borders on the edges of your screen is less acceptable than letter box borders with the bit of 21:9 content you watch.

That is a really nice monitor! I love how it doesn't look like a bad sci fi movie. TV's are becoming viable now for PC gaming as well. We have a 43" and a 55" with VA panels in our house with PC's connected and they're great. As long as you aren't putting people at extreme angles, which we're not. They're both under one frame of response @ 60hz. Both do 4K 60 fps and 4:4:4 chroma. They both calibrate nicely. You can tell the GPU to do the scaling, and set custom resolutions between 1080p and 2160p (1440p, 1800p and other divisible by 16 resolutions). If you set closer than you should, you can set 21x9 resolutions, and suddenly they're large ultrawides. Most TV's can't do all of these things correctly, but they're out there if you do your research. The best TV's aren't the best at gaming. It's actually in the budget TV's you'll find gaming gems.

VA panels are actually quite common. Lots of TVs use VA panels. Samsungs "gaming" and mid tier monitors use VA. Although the contrast ratio is higher, you do lose contrast when viewing at an angle. Its not really a huge issue because you'd really have to pixel peep. And it also does get brighter (to my eyes anyways).

Tarek Al Shawwa I disagree with that statement. I understand with a TV where the viewing angles are just awkward if your not alone and own one + your far away but I have a curved UW and ive used flat screen ones and it makes a nice difference. Imo it's more of something that won't make much of a difference but makes a nice enough one for it to be noticable
@gunndygaming6 жыл бұрын
Curved screens are a gimmick for TVs (unless you watch TV from only 5 feet from the screen). For monitors, you sit MUCH closer to the screen usually and the curved screen actually has an effect. If you measure directly out 90 degrees from the top corners of the screen....as long as you sit inside where those lines cross....then Curved screens are great. If you are outside of that crosshair, then the purpose of the curve goes away.
@AvatarPuls6 жыл бұрын
I've owned both a flat ultrawide and a curved ultrawide. With the monitors as wide as they are, on a flat panel, the left and right side are noticeably farther away, and actually look weird, like they are curving away from you. However, a curved screen with the proper radius will compensate for this, keeping all points of the screen at the same distance, and it actually feels like the screen is flat, instead of curving backwards. I don't like curved TVs, but I would never get a flat ultrawide monitor again, curved are much better.

Crossover 34u100 is a curved 3440x1440 VA panel @100hz for $499 on ebay. Dream-Seller is the sellers name and he guarantees a pixel perfect panel. Mine arrived no problems.

The thing with freesync is that it is cheaper (if not free) to implement. Then gsync is very expensive since it needs a chip inside the monitor

People that don't tie their ego to their hardware maybe? The vast majority of gamers are running RX580 and lower hardware, 1080/ti users are a niche within this market niche.

I have a Z35P with similar specs. If anyone hesitating on buying ultrawide I recommend to try it out in a shop if it's possible, otherwise I think it's magical.

You should take a look at the Dell U2718Q. The UP2718Q was one of the best content creation 4k monitors in terms of color accuracy and they cut it down a bit to the U2718Q. For a 4K panel, I tested it with Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Division, Dragon Age Inquisition and more fast paced games like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile and the color accuracy is so vibrant for a fraction of the price of the UP2718Q and it supports HDR for benefiting of the games that support it like Mass Effect Andromeda which looks pretty awesome with HDR. I was pleasantly suprised when I got mine a few months ago and I have no ghosting or artifacts when I play games. Well worth it for the price.
@TechnoBabble6 жыл бұрын
It does NOT support and true HDR standard, it's a basically software trickery. And while it can look better in things like games it is not true to the original content. That panel is nowhere near the brightness required to be certified for an HDR standard.

Very nice monitor height adjust does not enhance any thing but the level it can be viewed. Very minor discrepancy for the price considering the over all quality... the stability and strength of the bezel is more than enough to sway us into buying! Great product. Great review Jay!

You should Take a look at the Samsung CF791. It’s pretty much the same except it has quantum dot so you get less blue light and “better colors” (I haven’t noticed if it’s better than a standard VA).

VA panels can have ghosting/smearing issues as well. Particularly with darker color switching to lighter.

I've been very happy with 27" for me, I currently have one, but will be adding 2 more. Plus I'm kind of on that G-Sync band wagon. But this seems like such a great panel and I keep suggesting it for my wife but she also thinks she'd prefer 27".

Viewers, stop hating jay for highlighting a good monitor at a good price. All panels come out of a few different panels but just with different stands and badge. So thank you Jay for the video, sadly price drop isn't in the UK.

I have a feeling there might be an adjustment for the height spring that's in a really awkward place, or you have to partially disassemble the arm assembly to get to it...

What about off center contrast shift and black crush? Notorious VA issues. And what about the transitions to black, are they smooth or do they look like there's an oil spill with the fading color? This is different from banding. Problems like this seem to just get ignored from most monitor reviews.. makes to hard to actually find a good monitor.

I would love to snag one of these but I would like to know what the numbers are for input latency. Input latency should be tested and listed in monitor specs by all manufacturers. To me, input latency is easily in the top 3 of biggest buying points for any monitor used for gaming.

The bigger question is, do you really need IPS in a setting like that? On a laptop i could totally understand because you're mobile and sometimes you may need to be in non-ideal viewing conditions. But in typical office setting, where you can control your position (relative to the screen), the screens position relative to you (vesa mount) and ambient lighting? What is the benefit of IPS? Or put another way, is it possible for a TN panel to achieve the same amount of color accuracy?

I want one of these so bad, but I am waiting on either a 144Hz version, an actual 4K pixel density, or both together. I'm also quite curious about the super ultra wides as well, where it's basically two 16:9's in one panel(32:9), rather than 21:9. I hope AMD comes out with higher end GPU's so I can finally take advantage of Freesync found in most monitors these days.

The fade on the edges would be way more natural feeling than light bleed imo. I've always wondered if there was a way to have the center area HD but then the sides a much lower resolution since mainly peripheral vision (which is not HD in our brains). Or maybe this was possible with a 3 monitor setup?
@TheCgOrion6 жыл бұрын
Jay, are you sure your cabling isn't pulling the panel back down? You might need to provide a little extra cable to it. I see it does look a little light.
@rbaleksandar6 жыл бұрын
The incorrect vertical adjustment of the position of the screen is a downside for me. If you sit for 8-10 hours a day working on this thing and you have to a)adjust your chair's height and/or b)place X number of books under the monitor to make it the right height for your eyesight (eyes should be looking at the top border of the screen) it's a pain. I've dealt with such an issue and while at first it might not be a problem, it becomes one over time and rather fast.
